Protest Songs aren't ideally suited to to the northern soul genre, which could at times be simplified down to "she loves me/she loves me not"

But are there any good 60s stomper protest songs? Please no mention of James Coit

Appreciate there are loads of 70s with maybe Al Wilson - Be Concerned right near the top for me.

Al doing some sterling work making up for past misdemeanours?

Whats your favourite.....stand up & be counted......vote with your fingers now!

ps Currently listening to Sly & The Family Stone - Family Affair. Not really a protest song, but what a tune!

No you'd get birched for mentioning that.

Think there were some soundrack LP's mentioned on a similar thread, the late part of last year.

Richard Caiton - Where is the love. Song encouraging peace (at the time of the cold war) between nations. Super record.

Brian

Larry Saunders - Where Did Peace Go?.....Vietnam war.

Curtis Mayfield - We Got To Have Peace.

The Players - Bring Him Back....Vietnam war.

Why do a lot of people hate James Coit?

The arrangement, the vocal, the sentiments of the song?

Esther Marrow- Things aint right.

Not a Northern track but a 6ts female funk vocal and what a track.

On the more Soulful side:

Patrice Holloway- Stay with your own Kind

William Bell- The Man in the Street

Marvin Gaye- Where are we Going

Gospel Classics- More Love that's what we need

Johnny King and Fatback Band- Peace Love not War

The Impressions- People get Ready, This is my Country

Bring the boys home - Jackie Lee

Here's a few, not all 60's

Four Voices-We live in the ghetto

Impressions-This is my country

Syl Johnson-Is it because i'm black

World Column-So is the sun

Yes, and I remember reading somewhere that some of Motown's love songs could actually be interpreted on a wider social level - eg "It Takes Two" could be interpreted as an advocacy of the greater power of collective action over individual action :D

And surprised noone's mentioned Joe Tex's current biggie "I Wanna Be Free"

But in close second place.... Paper Lace - Billy Don't Be A Hero :D

Kenny Rogers & First edition - ruby don't take your love to town :D
