The Kelly Rowland version is quite nice, but of course pales in comparison with Bobby Womack´s original recording from 1975. It´s from Safety Zone (UA), which I remember as kind of a slick album.

Lovely girl, can't sing (never could) and why would anyone seriously care about spinning this when they have Womack, Vicki Sue Robinson or Georgie Fame available to play instead!

Carl Sim's did a very good version of this track on his last CD. I think it was called Can't Stop Me

Of course the old codgers will go on about Womacks wonderful original..But how often do they dig it out from their enormous archives.Hardly ever i bet.They are too busy waffling on about their valuable trophy pieces.You urban haters can have a field day but the youngsters will love it.Good sales.Lots of lovely royalties for its composer and a new Porsche for hard working Kelly.Which is what this business is really about..

Womack's version of this is the only one worth bothering about. A pleasant pop song taken to the limit with a truly great BW vocal and, crucially, the harmonies which all other versions miss by a mile. Kelly Rowland's version is strictly karaoke.

Wonack himself is not adverse to covering other peoples popular songs in his own inimmable wayI am sure his fans really enjoy his renditions of FLY ME TO THE MOON,Close To You/California Dreaming etc.Im sure some people think these are great versions.I do not much care for them but i would not say he sounded demmented when performing them.All artists who make records aim at the pop market.If Bobby Womack does not beliene this then why did he let the Rolling Stones have the global hit with ITS ALL OVER NOW?Constructive critiscm from Soul fans is welcome but not anti youth/better in my day.RnBs tripe type dismissives are just snobberry.Bobby womack likes Caddilacs so maybe he will get a new one.The car metaphors are about earning a living if you missed that.

Got to agree in part.The Vicki Sue version is ace..Love It Love It.Georgie Fame has mullered a few good records with his cover versions over the years but in this case has a worthy contender.Not having a good strong clear vocal never stopped Paul Weller or Junior Walker from making effective music.Both are vocally distinctive but technicly flawed.I have hinted in another post that Womacks albums are patchy and not everything he does is on a par with Shakespear or Picasso.

Bobby Womack didn't want them to record it at all, Sam Cooke tried to talk him into it and he never actually agreed to it. Apparantly after the royalty cheques started coming in tried his best to get them to cover another of his tracks!!

Anyway maybe we should have another thread for great tales about soul artists...and leave the "urban" to the kids eh .

I became interested there, when I saw Kevin Rowland - Daylight, only to realise it said Kelly, I need Glasses, or less drink, opticians tomorrow, wife can drive !!!!!

I think it's alright but she should do more tunes like Bump Like This, that was deadly!

My Missus heard the new version on the radio the other week and loved it....i explained that the original was by Sir Bobby and put it on CD for her...and guess what? There is only one version she listens to now and it aint bloody Kelly!

A girl with fine taste...guess thats why i married her.....!
