at the moment no hard decisions have been made.

what i need to know is this: if we are looking at 8 to 10 hours we will need 7 or 8 dj's. we are looking at a one room venue capacity about 400 to 450 with smaller rooms attached but not suitable for dancing, maybe a deck or two set up for use by anyone wishing to use them for whatever reason.

security and staff not an issue we need the fees expected by decent dj's and maybe one or two big names.quality sound systems provided.

also what would you like to see at an all dayer ? anything new or novel?

In my experience, DJ fees run from between nothing to £150, depends on how nicely you ask some DJs...

High-rollers will often DJ for very little/nothing/a sales pitch if they like the music policy or promoter.

Best advice is ask them if they're willing to do it for a smaller amount, with the option of upping their fee if it's a packer... say £30 per DJ as a starting point....

Depending on how busy they are, most DJs would rather be out every weekend DJing for a bit of expenses (read as beer money) than be sat at home charging nobody £150 for the privilige.

Why not use the smaller rooms for dj showcasing i.e. a bit of mod, bit of popcorn/doo wop/ska etc as in the victoria at prestatyn. of hour slots bring your box.

I'd like to add that most of the guys I know who DJ are always willing to work with a promoter.

For example three great lads, Vince Ayers, Andy Hutchins and Matt, all Dj'd for us at Newport, on a very quiet night. When we came to pay them what we promised before the night, they refused point blank to take a single penny. Despite playing between them 4 hours of top quality rare soul.

These guys arent unusual in being so gracious, but actions like that shouldnt go un-noticed. That is just another reason why the northern scene is so great.

A certain "highrolling" dj now wants the shirt off your back!!!! We had him last year at a reasonable amount "the going rate if you like" and thought we would get him back this year, now I maybe a Yorkshireman (and im not tight b4 you start) but the famous "HOW MUCH!!!!!" did come into it. Digs, Travelling expenses, fee for the night, etc like you say there are plenty of guys out there who have got the tunes and who will do it for the love of it (petrol money if you want)

Will this lead to the old argument of "Do you really need a "top name" to get them in?? IMO the right mix of dj's with the tunes wether "names" or not will give you a top night of soul music. Agree a fee as early as you can, in the setting up stages if possible, set a limit on how much you will pay each dj, dont think if he's not a Biggie no one will come. Funny old world djing and promoting, I can get a dj to come from Italy cheaper than I can to come 80/90 miles or so.

AS A CO PROMOTER SETTING UP DJ'S FOR THE COMING YEAR,THE LOCAL LADS HELP OUT AND KEEP THEIR FEE'S TO AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL,

SOME OF THE BIGGER NAME DJ'S ALSO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE NUMBERS AT THE GIG AND AGAIN CHARGE A SET FEE PLUS SOME EX'S AGAIN A GOOD THING.

BUT SOME OF THE BIGGER NAMED DJ'S DO NOT EVEM ANSWER TEL CALLS OR EMAILS AND AFTER TRYING TO EXPAND THE LOCAL SOUL FANS TO ACCEPTING A LARGER MUSIC EXPANSE WE ARE NOT STUCK IN PUTTING THE DJ'S ON,BUT ARE LTD TO HOW FAR THEY WILL TRAVEL OR WHERE THEY WILL APEAR,BUT USUALLY NO PROBS

FEES 30PLUS HAVE BEEN QUOTED AND ACCEPTED BUT WE HAVE TO GET THE NUMBERS TO PAY AND THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN,BUT AS ALL PROMOTERS AND DJS KNOW WE ALL DO OUR BEST AND WE CANT ASK FOR ANYMORE HOPING THIS HELPS THE ORIGINAL REQUEST

Can I quote that to you Jon, when I ask you to DJ for Blue Skies in July?

When someone ask,s me to DJ I take into account the distance I have to travel

and the numbers of Soulies expected at a venue, if its for charity or a good cause

I dont charge anything and stand the cost myself same if the promoters are

losing out money wise I charge nothin.

From a personal point of view I have never classed myself as a DJ just someone

who has a few 100 good 45,s and knows how to get soulies dancin I usually just play to keep soulies dancin with a mixture of 60,s 70,s 80,s rare soul

Some promoters expect you to dj for nothin thinking they are doing you a

favour !!!! which pisses me off big style !! the 45,s in my dj box cost £££££,s

over the years when dj,ing on some really shite equipement i,ve knackered

expensive 45,s up due to shagged stylus,s ect also couple of years ago

someone helped themselves to around a dozen 45,s out of my box when my back was turned queing up a sound, stuff like the Ringleaders, Shawn Robinson,

Mighty lovers ect ect not major items but still added up come to a couple grand

what I,m gettin at when things like this happen you have no comeback you have to take the loss !

Trouble these days in my opinion there are far to many dj,s some great others absolute shite who have no idea whatsoever what dj,in is about, which is to

entertain the payin customer by playin sounds to keep the dancefloor movin

and also to keep the non-dancers happy ! To be at the top of the tree you have

to have years of knowledge of sounds played over the years and have a great ear for undiscovered or semi known recordings to keep the northern scene moving forward some of the so called major guy,s do nothing for me just play the same rare 45,s has each other frightened to death of playing anything different

others like Butch, Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Andy Dyson ect ect ect

are always a breath of fresh air and always have me sayin wow what was that

it was brilliant these people deserve to be paid in my opinion that little extra !

I always like listening to some of the lesser known DJ,s like Andy Hutchins and

Stewart Bennet, Dickie Watt, Dave Box ect who have awesome collections of rare soul, quite a few of the female DJ,s are awesome and deserve spots at major nites

but never seem to get the chance !. Its one hell of a job promoting a major

soul nite or one of the major weekenders and these guy,s deserve great credit

for giving up so much of their time to make a successful nite for us lot on the Soul Scene also great credit to Soulies who run smaller venues to keep the scene alive

BLIMEY ! how did I go off on one when all I wanted to say was I charge a min £30

up to £150 if I have to travel to the other end of the country and stay over !

or just get me pissed and because I,m such a good natured old soul ,i,ll DJ for nowt !!

I employed over 45 djs last year and paid 30 to a maximum of 80 quid a spot at the soultown niters.This includes the top 10 djs in the country all of whom are regulars at our shds allniter,if the djs belive in the venue they will work for you.I hope your venue is a success but as it is going to be in manchester please have a look at the regular nites already up and running,i have practicaly everyones dates

nice one folks thanks for the feedback. the fees stated seem fine to me tho i thought less than i expected. of course i agree with the bonus and that if a night goes well and digs and the like can be arranged as can a dj only p*ss up at a pals pub round the corner. gratis of course lol.

plenty of food for thought of course the dates have to be closely looked at as posted before as there is a plethora of soul gigs oop north. well it is northern soul lol.

Ged, You know it son...lol on a more serious note regarding dj fee's it's a private thing between dj and promoter, yes there are certain dj's who can get more than others but the fee's don't even come close to the financial investment for records, still most of us do it because we can, because we have the records, the passion, the commitment, i always say i do my nine to five gig through the week which pays the bills etc. the dj thing is my release, my escape and my contribution to the scene and the music i love, it's for life this scene and it's a pleasure to be asked to play a few records..........it's a little harder and not as simple as that, many of the comments Ian Cunliffe made here i second, yes there are many people out there playing records yet how many are really top draw?

Regarding how much dj's are worth well that's a hard one, i work on the basis that if it's a big night,packed etc. then i tend to leave it to the promoter to make an offer but i do have my own rate in my head, if i know the promoter i normally agree a bottom line and tell them let's see how it goes, long distance major venues i give a straight price, for the right people i would do it for a flat fee and if it's a bad night then forget it, however having said that if you are gonna promote an event i believe that you should go into the venture with enough money to cover all expences even if it's a lower fee to the dj's, it's about trying to cover your back and reputation.

I've worked hundreds of gigs over the past twenty years and have done the freebies, worked for nothing, served my time so now for myself and many others out there dj'ing the money ain't really what it's about coz even £500.00 a spot for the likes of Soul Sam, Butch, Andy Dyson, Keith Money etc. don't even come close really, as long as we cover the expences, have a few beers (or a lot of beer in the case of Mr Rimmer and myself) we do it because we can, we do it because it's inside us, we do it because we love it it's that simple.

But that does not mean that we are the last thing to be considered when it's time for a 1000 capacity packed venue to pay the wages at the end of the night, or oh lads sorry i've had a bad night, or we have only had xxxxx through the door.

I've heard it all before over the years as i'm sure many other dj's have, don't have a problem if the place is empty but when it's rocking pay the entertainers i.e the dj's a decent whack.

There might very well be dj's who will do it for nothing or for £15.00 and a pint but this ethic is something set in the dark ages alongside £3.00 admission for a soul night, compared to other forms of entertainment, modern day admission prices to current night clubs etc. in any city centre across the country i bet it's £10.00 if not more to get into the place, then you have £3.00 for a bottle of lager etc. etc. yet the northern scene seems to not have moved with inflation in terms of admission prices for example, crazy really when many people think nothing of spending thousands of pounds on records and other forms of weekend entertainment lol yet god forbid we have to pay £15.00 or £20.00 to get into an allnighter.

The other way is simple revert back to the days when there were only three or four dj's on instead of ten or more, all do longer or more spots. which brings the best out of most dj's, to dig deep, think it out, blend the spot, take the dance floor to another level, another place, work it, enjoy it, have a feel and a passion for it.

Hope you don't take my comments the wrong way i just believe if some venues are packed with 1500 people at £10.00 each admission charge then to pay a top namr dj anything less than £100.00 is a little insulting, still with the likes of myself Mr Cunliffe, Rimmer, Banks etc. etc. we would all dj in a telephone box to one person for a pint or ten........well me and Mr Rimmer perhaps two phone boxes one to play the records and and one to turn into a bar.

chris i agree with you wholeheartedly. i done gig on sat last in manchester city centre. only motown and NS commons. what most ppl call NS. done 4 hrs and got a oner. even got my beer and stuff.

i think looking at what ppl have said on here NS dj's are selling theirselves a bit short .

it is a specialist market and if you want specialist stuff you should pay for it .

respect to all you guys, a lot of money is a 7" box and if it goes astray or gets broke? well i would cry like a baby. (boxtops) lol
