In 78 there was a time when M's use to open early before the Casino (8-10 I think). We use to go in for a shift pint of Burtonwood's (bloody awful stuff) and get warmed up for the main event. My mate Alec swears that Leo Sayer - Thunder in my heart was once played, now I cannot verify this as I was outside in search of some hurry up. Anybody else remember it?

no not me Matt, I know it was played at Blackpool but I didn't hear it at Wigan

The thing is, records like Queen Of Clubs shouldn't be derided just because they got in the charts; Blackpool was playing 70% new releases so Wigan also played new imports; two of the very biggest records 76 were Don't take away the music and Heaven must be missing an angel by Tavares - I remember hearing Car Wash played there on import too, and Center City, Do what you wanna do (T Connection) - they all charted eventually

Esther Philips "What A Difference A Day Makes" was a big record at Sams as well, along with the Tavares DTATM, played off the album before the 45 release.

Both great records and obviously played elsewhere at the same time.

This was played a few years later athe Top of the World along with Harold Melvin the love I lost and they sounded brilliant.

Steve Arrington and Booker Newbury were also played ahead of release , If I remember right a version of 'going back to my roots' was getting played at that time too , not a clue who it was by though.

Yes - 1976 Isaac Hayes Movement was released on Uk (ABC 4100) and charted. Was later played/reused during 1978 by Winstanley.

Apparently Dave Evison was doing a spot in the main hall and had forgotten to cue up is next track,as the last few bars of whatever he was playing started to fade out he just reached into his box and pulled out the first thing he got his hands on"Move On Up" was the said track It went down a storm I'm led to believe,This one thing was to lead to the opening of Mr M's as an oldies room in the following weeks.

just going off topic for a mo, i always remember going to one of kojacks do's down in portsmouth in 1977 and he played hot chocolates first no 1 so you win again, because he said if anyone deserved a no 1 they did,one of the few groups to have a top ten hit every year that decade i believe.
