  1. Rob Just because someone is credited as the performing artist on a record does not always mean that they are the real performing artist this music is littered with many misnomers due to contractual disagreements, moonlighting artists and musicians etc etc. For example one of the current members of the Vibrations who recently performed at Prestatyn was none then James Barnes of James Barnes & The Agents who is credited as recording two 45's on Goldern Hit, when infact he recorded three releases it's him singing on Jock Mitchell's "No Mad Woman" as Jock was tied up in a contractual dispute with Scepter at the time. People's suspicion about Al Kent not being the true vocalist on "The way You've Been Acting Lately" became aroused due to his lack of a vocal contribution during the Ric Tic Road Show during the 80's. Dave
  2. The last I spoke to Al Kent he was reputedly in the process of writing a book, as to wether this actually happened I don't know. But I'm sure it would have made great reading, Hermon Weems once told me a great story about the early day of Wingate & Goldern World. Before Wingate built his own studio's he used to use either RCA in New York or Columbia in Chicago. On one occassion he booked Bob Hamilton, Al Kent and Hermon Weems on a flight from Detriot to New York to record some sessions. The plane that they were on had two seats on either side. Bob And Hermon where seated on one side with AL with some unkown guy on the opposite. Just before the plane was due to take off a pssengers name was announced over the tannoy askiing him to vacate the flight, this being the guy who was sitting next to Al. The guy after several calls continued to refuse to vacate his sit. Eventually the cabin crew man handled this passenger out of his seat and as they are pushing him out of the door of the plane the familiar figure of Ed Wingate crept in behind them and took his seat, much to Bob, Hermon's and Al's amazement. When they asked Ed how the hell he managed that, he just smiled and said "Easy, I own 25% of the Airline !! Dave
  3. Yep a 1950's street corner group known as 'The Sparrows' Al (Kent) Hamilton, Hermom Weems Charles Harris, Paul Leslie and Phil Townsend (who incidently co-wrote The Little Foxes "Love Made To Order", as well as "So Glad Your Love Don't Change"and Ortheia Barnes "Heartbreaker, Soulshaker"). 8. Now then Father Ted When the general consensus is to encourage more youngsters onto the scene here you are giving a young cub like Bearsy a right bashing ! any young buck who likes William Cummings and the Out Of Sights (Saru) has got great taste in my book Dave

I couldn't believe the other day when I stumbled across a lookalike Stateside Demo of Jimmy Radcliffe "Long After Tonight " etc and Little Anthony "Better Use Your Head" UA Demo. This is really taking the piss. Dave
  18. Ginger isn't really known for any kind of sudden violent movements, but if you need the phone number of a curry house anywhere in the length and breath of Britain at 4am in the morning , he's your man ! Dave
  19. O.k a wrong choice of a example by me maybe, I have nothing against Craig Charles the person and it's rather unfortunate that his show is entitled 'The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show' but it would be interesting to see what he played left to his own devices. I agree with your regarding it either being his show or no-one, but that just prove's how sad and predicable radio has become following the syndicating of radio shows and the sacking of many time served Dj's who worked their way up from a moblie Dj in the backroom of a pub. Regarding show producers let's face it anyone can produce a mainstream northern show, Radcliffe, Wilson, Parrish,Legend and few motown tunes chucked in for good measure and Bob's your uncle. All this media attention has turned a once fiercely proud and progressive underground scene into a trendy haunt for middle aged discontented bingo players, with the latest Wigan Smash hits cd out of Aldi. Dave
  20. Radio Dj's are a thing of the past, it's now all about 'Celebrity Presenters' and as such that's all they do is present a show, the musical content is decided by a, or team of producers based on their musical taste's (or bad taste in most cases) and their limited knowledge of the Northern Scene, ie The Craig Charles Show. Brierley Hill, you were lucky to get out alive they still practice cannibalism down there, and are quite partial to a slice of brummie with a splash of brown source. Mind you I bet it worked well with your Hwaiian shirt !
