Steady on a minute here Guys This may be a perfectly legal re-issue rather than a bootleg, if Eugene owns the masters etc (which I believe he does) he's well within his rights to re-issue his own material. What has probably happened here is that some numpty has contacted him on facebook etc and told him how wonderful he is and his record is a massive tune on the pissy arsed northern/modern scene and is worth loads of money. He then due to his total lack of knowledge and understanding of the size and nature of these scenes thinks he's got a top 10 hit in Europe. Also due to his lack of understanding about the value of a original release and a re-issue he also thinks that if he re-issues it he's gonna make the same money as a copy he's seen go though E-bay. An all too familiar story i'm afraid. Dave

Both Clifford Binns "You Got To Help Me/Take It From Me" Carrie (6501) and Edward Hamilton's "I'm Gonna Love You/Call Me" were both recorded at United Sound as the fledgling Labeat Studios were a very basic affair at that time. Melvin Davis used to pick up both Binns, Hamilton and the Arabians and take them to the Labat studio to rehearse in the evenings only. Davis was moonlighting at Labeat, as he was signed as a producer to D-Town at the time. As were Motown musicians Cornelius Grant (Lead Guitar)and Drummer Pistol Allen. The other musicians on the sessions being George White (Trombone), Tony Newton (Bass Guitar) , Melvin filled in as both pianist and arranger. Clifford Binns is remembered as a very polite, softly spoken man who needed very little rehersal. Therefore Binns and Hamilton are both seperate people. With Binns also recording the James Hendrix penned "It Was Only Yesterday/Again It's Christmas" on Ronnie Moore's Theoda label, a record I bought blind for a couple of quid out of Soulbowl's Detroit Catalogue but quickly sold as it was way too early for me and not a patch on his Carrie release. Both Al Williams "I Am Nothing" and James Shorter's "Modern Day Woman" were pressed at RCA the probable reason for these being the only two Labeat releases to appear on white demo's. Hendrix's initial version of Carrie records was financed by the owner of a local haberdashery store( who's name without checking currently escapes me) on the same street as were he lived. The owner was persuaded to back Hendrix by a young local promtion guy by the name of Clyde Brooks. Hendricks later showed his gratitude by recording "Soul Set" on Clyde (Carrie 008). Clyde later moved on to bigger and better things in New York. All this information was relayed to me by the following leading protagonists from back in the day,Melvin Davis, Edward Hamilton, Cornelius Grant and Clyde Brooks.I do wish some of these so called researchers would dig a bit deeper rather than just goole it ! All this with out my first cup of coffee of the day bah! Dave

Gareth The release of Eddie Holman might have killed it for Mick but it recieved extensive airplay before and after it'seventual release by other people. He had a acetate of this for quite sometime before he played it (I know as it was me who sent him it) and it was an ego thing that stopped him playing it after it's release I'm sorry to say. Same thing with the unissued Natural Impulse "We're Gonna Make It Through" the first time I played it covered up as Natural Impulse every DJ and woud-be DJ in the room were trying to find out it's true identity (amazing the effect a circle of old wall paper can have on other DJ's) but how many of them bought when they found out it was an unissued Soul Junction release ? Mind you it did sell out in less than two weeks, but again how many Dj's have played it since ? Anyone who spends their time trying to find unissued material will tell you it's getting harder and harder you can spend months even years trying to find artists and producers only to be told they haven't got Jack Shit ! So the sensible money is on the guys who collect these unissued releases on whatever label as like it or not these are the future just check the soul fraternity obituary columns it's only gonna get harder. I know that Dave, I've still got the UK copy that I bought as a new release. But I still think the sound reproduction is better on the UK release.
