  11. Here you go boys and girls everything you need to know about The Fabulous Apollos, my sleeve notes from the now deleted Soul Junction CD Comp "We Got A Sweet Thing Going On" SJCD 5011 Eric And The Vikings would be the most successful act on Popcorn’ Wylie’s Soul Hawk label when in the summer of 1970 they scored a number 1 hit in Detroit with their very first record the harmonious “Vibrations (Made Us Fall In Love)/Get Off The Streets Y’all” (1009). Such was the popularity of the song that Atlantic records picked the song up for national distribution with the song reputedly achieving sales of over 1,000,000 copies. A High school group that was formed in 1969 by members Eryke ‘Eric’ McClinton (Baritone & Lead), Philip Taylor (2nd Tenor & Lead) and Clifford Moore (1st Tenor & Lead). Although still at school each of them had gained previous experience with Eric cutting his teeth as part of a gospel choir, Clifford having been part of a group called the Soul Delic’s and Philip having previously sung with the Fabulous Apollos over at Valtone records. The groups name The Vikings was taken from the NFL Minnesota Vikings and was given to them by their financial sponsors, two former Michigan State football players Carl Ella and Clint Jones. Following the success of “Vibrations” Berry Gordy approached Popcorn and signed Eric And The Vikings to Motown. Where they recorded two outstanding singles “Time Don’t Wait/It’s Too Much For Man To Take Too Long” (Gordy 7116) in 1971 which was followed a year later by “I’m Truly Yours/Where Do You Go (Baby)” (Gordy 7132). Although no other recording where released the Vikings did feature as backing vocalists on many other Motown artist’s sessions. Eric initially left the group to sing gospel with his sister but later joined Meli’sa Morgan and Alyson Williams in a studio group by the name of ‘High Fashion’ who scored a #32 hit in the black music chart with “Feeling Lucky Lately” in 1982. Eric McClinton’s replacement in ‘The Vikings’ was Ervin Conwell. Conwell had previously been a member of the male vocal quartet The Fabulous Apollos along with the aforementioned Philip Taylor, Frank Wagner and the groups lead singer Ed Bailey. The group members had all attended the same High School as Carl Calton and Lonette McKee and came from the same Westside neighborhood as their future employers Frank and Devora Brown. As The Fabulous Apollos they recorded four excellent 45 releases on the Brown’s Valtone label. Three of their releases “It Ain’t No Use” (Valtone (102), “Some Good In Every Bad” (Valtone 105) and “What’s So Good To You” (Valtone 107 featured both vocal and instrumental versions of the same song. While their first release on the label (101) featured two different vocal performances the rousing A-side “Determination” backed with the melodic “The One Alone” on which Ervin Conwell sang lead vocals as well as co-writing. Conwell and the original Vikings continued to perform as The Motown Vikings until they too eventually left Motown. Following their departure they recorded a solitary 45 single in 1975 entitled “Heartaches (Don’t Last Forever)/Never Seen A Stranger” (Voyage 1001) under the artist name of just ‘The Vikings’. Eventually Clifford Moore did return to Motown in a song writing and production role working alongside Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Norman Whitfield. While Philip Taylor became an actor and featured as a stand in for Eddie Murphy in five films including a speaking part in “Harlem Nights”. Irving Conwell is now sadly deceased. Words By David Welding With acknowledgements to: Clifford Moore & Philip Taylor.
