Benny Harper - My Prayer
When was this first played? As I wasn't on the scene post 85, it's essentially a new sound to me, and one which has blown me away. If I hadn't read Kirsty's (think it was Kirsty) sales post a while back, I'd have been none the wiser. When I heard it at VaVa Voom in May, full whack, in a crowded room full of dancers I kind of welled up, and a mate of mine too, who's known the record a lot longer than me. One never stops learning on this scene.

Never Had It So Good
Surely this is all about taste (and tempos)? I wouldn't give "Don't Be Sore At Me" house room, hated it then, still do. I think Fortson & Scott and Benny Harper are as good as ANYTHING I heard in the 70s, and at the risk of sounding controversial, that funky edged Kings Of Soul thing on Down To Earth too. I certainly don't see myself as superior to anyone who rejects these records. After all, I did buy Bunny Sigler "Follow Your Heart" the other day. To embrace or not embrace, that is the question.

Ian Levine
That is sad to hear. Whatever he thinks of this site and some of the people on it is irrelevant in the face of such a blow. Also have a great family friend who suffered one about three or fours years ago. The road to recovery has been a long and arduous one but it's amazing how the body can respond over time. Wish him all the very best for a speedy recovery.

Thanks chaps.

Frankie L Saunders Take Another Look - Two Releases
I have the Juana one, dated 1981, 4,31 secs. Listening to it on Youtube, I see there's one on Sho Me, dated 1982 but 4,12 secs... Which is the scarcer of two or are they about the same. Nice Soul record.

Shocking level of literacy. He looks an objectionable sort too.

Wigan Casino 6/2/81 5Th Oldies Anniversary Live Tape
Nina Simone was definitely a West Hampstead, early 100 Club tune, where it most definitely fit in with other left field stuff R&B and Jazz influenced stuff. Hearing it transplanted to a more Northern event like the Fleet allniter was odd though.

Tonite - Northern Soul Bbc Living For The Weekend
I think you may have got the chronological order the wrong way round Byrney. I've been poised over my keyboard all day waiting for this sweet moment.

Soundtrack - Northern Soul The Film
The geographical data will confirm that this whole thing has gone way beyond a bunch of beyond middle age codgers in the UK. Well done Ian, Gareth, Elaine and all the others who've worked on this project.

Mike Rollo is name I remember from the posters... He's no longer with us either, I believe...

Levi Stubbs - Prison?
Seem to a remember a bust for possession of cannabis in America too, back when lots of pop stars were getting busted. Not sure if he went to prison though.

Anyone Ever Hear This Played At Wigan
Love that Joe Matthews A side. Beyond my means though, sadly.

Anyone Ever Hear This Played At Wigan
Mick Smith plays ANYCD, at least he did the last time I was at the 100 Club, December 2006. Tremendous record.

Darrell Banks 45 In The Guardian
The very nature of this thread demonstrates we're all a bit two stops before Dagenham, but don't you just love it!

Bobby Womack R.i.p
Grim news to wake up to, indeed. Time to reflect and listen to his marvellous legacy. RIP.

Great stuff Pete. An extremely well written piece too. Nice to know we're especially intense. :-)

Soundtrack - Northern Soul The Film
I liked the book and don't think the drug side was overplayed. Gear was an integral part of the experience for many folk. I remember nights at Peterborough when it was scarce or just bad shite, 80% of the punters would be seriously glum as a result. Agree with everyone else's views on the scene being dragged down years ago, even The Goodies had a pop, ffs. I don't personally know Elaine but you can tell she's committed. Love her enthusiam and eloquence. Looking forward to seeing it!

Urgent Want - Candi Staton
I'm reminded what a great record this is.
