  1. Not so much grit but some bite, as with few of the early R&B orientated stuff, I do like LaBrenda Ben's Chaperone.
  2. I'm sure the soul community will want to know of Freddie North's passing this week, aged 86. He wasn't big on interviews about his music career, though I think Tony Rounce had more success for the Kent CD release, than my attempts. Freddie was also a panelist as part of the permanent digital Nashville R&B exhibition (by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum). Will probably post up a link later.

  6. Juke strips for sale tonight, all 60s soul / R&B inc. Wendy Rene, Barbara Lewis, Kelly Brothers, James Carr, Major Lance, Magnificent Men, Ediie and Ernie, Willie Hightower, various Motown artists etc. £15 plus post for the lot. Half proceeds of all the soul/ R&B memorabilia I’m selling goes to World Central Kitchen who work in Gaza and other regions requiring humanitarian aid. PM to reserve.
  7. The soul / R&B original memorabilia offerings continue. Garnet Mimms performance contract (Phil Walden Artists & Promotions) today. The contract is dated October 1965, for a combined appearance of Garnet Mimms with (band of) Leroy Lloyd and the Swinging Dukes. For a wee bit of history and context, here goes: The venue the booking is for is the Pi Kappa Phi frat house (University of Alabama). The lobby of that frat house was big enough to be used for bands to set up stage, and the booking is for December 3, 1965 - presumably their end-of-semester Christmas bash. The original house was burnt down in 2019, after lying dormant for 20 years. As an aside, Mimms' appearance here was in the same year he recorded “It was easier to hurt her" for United Artists, and just before “Looking for you” was released. Leroy Lloyd was a South Carolina musician / band leader who had settled in Georgia by this point, so with Phil Walden's Artists and Promotions based in Macon, the coupling of Mimms and Lloyd's Swinging Dukes is logical. Lloyd had his own releases through to at least the mid 1970s - writing, producing and recording via Minaret. £30 plus post secures this one. UK buyers only please and PayPal. PM to reserve. 50% of sales are donated to World Central Kitchen who work in Gaza and other regions requiring humanitarian aid. So much more to come too, from the likes of Johnnie Taylor, ZZ Hill, Betty Wright, The Enchanters, the Kelly Brothers, Percy Sledge, Joe Simon, Roscoe Shelton, Sam and Dave, Ann Peebles, Mel and Tim, Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson, Willie Hightower, Otis Clay, JImmy Hughes, Mark IV, Clarence Carter and a boatload more! If you'd like to see any individual artist items before I post up in sales just PM me and I'll send pics / details, no obligation to buy etc.
  8. The soul / R&B original memorabilia offerings continue. The Van Dykes performance contract (Phil Walden Artists & Promotions) today. The contract is dated June 1967, the same year that "Save my love for a rainy day" for Mala which was released in the December. The specific venue for the appearance is "to be confirmed", but most likely was in North Carolina. The original top copy (shown here) is £20. I also have 2 carbon copies made at the time the office drew up the document for £10 each. Can send images of the carbon copies on request. UK buyers only and PayPal please, and PM to reserve. 50% of sales are donated to World Central Kitchen who work in Gaza and other regions requiring humanitarian aid.
