A youth culture left in the hands of old men'
One thing to bear in mind when referring to old blokes, years ago let's say in their 50's to 60's and even beyond ,it wouldnt be out of place to see someone of that age in a flat cap, smoking a pipe which IMO made them look dead old. You only have to look at soulies of that age on the scene today and there's a massive difference. The way they dress the style of clothing and possibly the way they think! on the scene now the older soulies do not look old even though they are as I am a young 60+ Imo Regards Fred

Poll: Version Battle - Our Love (Is In The Pocket)
If i'm not mistaken wasn't this covered in 2014?. For me it has to be Darrell Bank's 7inch single version. Was the version as a pposed to JJ Barnes's that was always played at the Wheel and other noted clubs during the early days of the scene. Regards Fred.

A youth culture left in the hands of old men'
I would be interested to know where Rob newberry saw this statement applied to Northern Soul? My take is that Northern Soul is a subculture and music genre that is listened to by Men and Women Boys and Girls all over the world. It is a music that has transcended barriers and brought people together worldwide to one common like minded music. It is the music we all love, to many grew up with,to others still growing up with and others never left them till their dying day.The question remains will Northern Soul cease to exist once a generation of followers pass on, or will it continue many years into the future as we have seen it continue, evolve and grow to where it is today. Personally I do believe it will given the younger generation that is coming on to the scene. Regards Fred.

Benny Troy RIP
Really sad news, Saw him live in Wakefield some years ago, what a humble and nice guy. To see him right there with an audience of around 40 soulies singing his classic,I wanna give you tomorrow" and actually meet him, shake his hand and get his autograph was a truly moving experience. One I shall never forget. Also a Leeds Central Anthem. RIP Benny.

The death of large Hall commercial oldies nighters
I remember going to Blackpool Mecca where people had coloured torch extensions and wore a belt that was around your waist and also went up and over a shoulder. Wasn't my thing but did enjoy at the time seeing The Crown Heights Affair live.Lol .All the best to Joey and Regards to you all. Fred.

If the term northern soul had not come about ?
With regard to the Casino, I totally agree Johnny regarding the temperature. I think it's the only club I ever wore a neckerchief, it did stop the perspiration going down your neck and I wore skinner jeans as lots did and if I went upstairs to mr m's I had to lift them at the knees otherwise they used to stick to my legs.Lol Regards Fred.

Steve Ellis (ex Love Affair) new single...oooh

25th of March 2006 Live at the Frobisher Suite The Millhouse Stanley Ferry Wakefield will be a night I will never forget, appearing live were Jackie Ross and Syl johnson two of my all time fav artists. Absolutely blew us all away, so so professional. You were so close to them you could have touched them. The records I recall Jackie singing were, Selfish One, Keep your chin up and trust in me and a few others.Syl Johnson what I recall sang his classic We did it, take me to the river and Is it because I'm black and a few others.Jackie & Syl finishing off with a duet.A Superb night was had by Jackie, Syl and the audience. The backing group was Snake Davis & The Suspicions. All the best Fred.

Not so Tired Oldies....
One Friday night my friends and I were on our way to a Wigan Casino oldies nighter when we called into birch Services and while we were in nature called so I went into the gents toilets only to see Pete Balance at a sink freshening up. Now Pete was a real character from Pontefract on the scene and I noticed he had a record resting on the sink.We said hello and Pete said the record he had with him was a cracking sound called This Man byWally Cox .I'd never heard it , anyway we were chatting away like you do and when he'd gone i noticed he'd left the record. I ran out to see if I could see Pete but no he was away . I looked for him in the Casino but never saw him. I still had his record and played it when I got home which I thought was brilliant. I was going to give Pete his record back the next time I saw him but sadly he passed away a while later,so this record is very dear to me as not only a superb record but the memory of that night at Birch services will always be with me. All the best Fred Ward.

Wigan Casino-'live acts'?
Yes I saw L J Johnson, Barbara Pennington and Evelyn Thomas there but can't remember the date as I was well Bl--ked at the time. I think to be accurate with the dates is a tall order as it was such a long time ago unless you wrote the dates down, but hey who would do that. It is however possible that the live acts would have been featured in Blues & Soul magazine at the time. You just have to find someone on here who has the time and inclination to go through copies of B& S. regards Fred.

If the term northern soul had not come about ?
A few comments in this thread about some artists not being soul artists. One example would be the record :- Charlie Rich:- Love is after me, a country singer yet it was a big sound at the Wheel and is definitely Northern Soul. It just shows that Northern soul covers a very large spectrum of artists and music. All the best Fred.

Most inappropriate request to a DJ....
Once at Blackpool mecca I asked Ian Levine for the record "I'm a fatso"?. All I got was a rather odd look from Ian . I was soon informed by someone why, that the actual record was called Manifesto. Such is youth, Lol Regards Fred.

YOUR AUTUMN OF TOMORROW
Has always been recognised as a brilliant northern soul record in the north of England. As for the lyrics yes a bit odd but this just adds to the record. It gets played now and again and always gets the floor full. I for one will be playing it on Sunday at the Leeds Central Alldayer Regards Fred.
