The Chances
Where is the demand for this coming from? If someone was to ask me how much is it worth I'd have said about £20.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
I wouldn't have Butch more or less warming up and Andy Dyson closing the night out. They are the top two DJ's in the country on the nighter scene right now and the timing of their sets should reflect that (IMO of course).

there's a matrix stamp or something similar under the label on the original, can't remember off top of me head what it says.

I don't need to join any brigade, I say it as I see it...whether that view is right or wrong is a different matter.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
The flyers for Lifeline say Rare Soul, that is what it is a Rare Soul Scene. Lifeline is advertised as the DJ's playing the very best in Rare, obscure, forgotten and underplayed soul music. Even though the policy is clearly stated on the flyer we still get complaints. Personally I don't go anywhere with a closed mind, I've been around long enough to know from the promoter and from the DJ's what to expect. If I go to an oldies night I expect oldies and I don't complain......I also read what the flyer says and what is said on forums such as this. I know full well what sort of night I will be getting music wise. I suppose I am being protective but shouldn't we all be a little protective about something we care so much about and put a lot of time and effort into? What gets me though is people complaining when they clearly don't know what they are complaining about or complaining when they clearly know what sort of night it is they are going to.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Why should the term "upfront" be used? I don't think upfront is a very good term to describe what is being played. I don't consider myself an upfront DJ either. I just play or try and play records that 95% of the other DJ's are not playing, I try and play something different, something forgotten and if I get hold of something unknown then great. I try and use a bit of imagination and not follow the flock. I love Northern Soul, Rare Soul, Modern Soul or whatever soul you want to call it, but I've no wish to go out and hear the same records today I first heard nearly 30 years ago no matter how good they are, and by and large they are good, better than many that are played under the banner of "rare" "upfront" blah blah blah. Did all those who have returned to the scene in the mid 90's and by and large changed it into a retro scene, hearing the same stuff they heard at Wigan and nothing like the scene before they returned, listen to the same top 40 every week whilst they had forgotten the scene existed? No I doubt they did. So why should this scene remain stuck in a time warp when there is so much good music out there. I personally can't see what pleasure other than social can be got listening to the same records every week, it would bore me to death. Most of the negative comments I see towards the so called "upfront" seem to come from the oldies crowd, why don't they just stick to the oldies if they don't like what others are playing? There are more than enough venues catering for their needs. Leave those who want to listen to something different to do what they want.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
What amazes me about all this rare bashing, many of the tracks in the main room (oldies) were rarer than the tracks played in the so called rare upfront room. The room was called Soul Expression, a room for the DJ's to use a bit of imagination and express themselves unlike in a main room playing the top 200 oldies ever where a DJ isn't allowed to express himself because the punters are stuck in a 40 year old time warp.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Sorry but I didn't play any obscure R&B nor any Latin in the rare room last night. Much of what I played was uptempo 60's soul music, few 70's early on in the set. No one forced you to go in there nor to Derby Assembly rooms itself. Northern Soul is a term not a type of music. Its umbrella covers a wide range of music, pop, soul, R&B & latin and others.

Dickie Wonder - Nobody Knows
which was released first, girlie backing one? I thought it was without first, then picked up/distributed by Parkway and girlie backing added. Later released on Golden Triangle.

The Sweet Things
Does this tell us the number of takes? Don't labels Motown use a 1A, 1B etc to say which number take the press is?

Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Is Johnny Tommy's brother Andy (sorry couldn't resist) I love this but probably cause more or less grew up with it. This topic alone just goes to show how diverse we are in our tastes. I love Esther Philips too.

The boot was on Soultown.

Monarch Pressing Plant
Monarch did use both as said. There are Highland releases in vinyl from Monarch. Styrene stampers lasted lot longer than vinyl ones so cut down the cost.

There's loads but here's three oldies. Invitations - Whats Wrong With Me Baby. Simply oozes soul, great vocal and harmonies, pure class. Fidels - Try A Little Harder . Bobby Freeman - I'll Never Fall In Love Again. Proper Northern stomper. Three "newies" as they were known..... Mello Souls -We Can Make It Diane Lewis - Ain't Got A Chance Tommy Ridgely - My Loves Gets Stronger.

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
We should try and avoid turning this into another oldies vs. newies topic. There are plenty of great nights giving a wide variety of choice for the punters. Sure a few more newer sounds could and should be introduced into sets and insisted upon IMO by promoters, especially at venues that have influence across the scene, just to freshen up a night and sustain interest over a longer period. Young uns/kids are exposed to a massive range of new music all the time and they don't listen to the same top 40 week in week out and I personally don't think the Northern Soul scene should either if it is to continue beyond the ageing body of people that represent the scene now. Good records will remain, crap will soon be dropped but the search for the next good record should always continue. Many many great records waiting to be rediscovered as well. It is the actions of irresponsible promoters and DJ's that are harming the scene and have no thought for the bigger picture or anyone else. It is widely acknowledged that there are too many venues with many clashes which leads to bad blood and resentment, first of all between the promoters and secondly between promoters friends and those they "employ" as DJ's. Yet not one promoter is prepared to do anything about it. Not one promoter when a date they want clashes with another (often long established event) are prepared to look for an alternative date or even cancel their promotion. Too many DJ's turn up an hour or even less for their set and then f*ck off after they've done their set. Some hop between two or three promotions on one night and in the end are not fully committed to either, especially an all-nighter where the DJ should be taking note of what is happening and what is being played, what not to play and what he/she can get away with. At the end of the day too many don't seem to give a sh&t about anything other than themselves. Like others have said I go out and I enjoy myself, I choose carefully where I go now, I no longer have the time spare time I used to have, but this doesn't mean either myself or anyone else should stop caring what is happening on the wider scene and people should be allowed to express their opinions when you can see what is wrong, there is a whole bigger scene out there, not just the world we personally live in.
