Marvellettes Youre love can save me is on a 45rpm tamla u.s. e.p made to promote the sophisticated soul album i think , only seen demos of this , Had an emidisc of this nearly forty years ago, just picked up a carver of it on Soul source a couple of weeks ago for a tenner ,very good sound quality , made up with it actually. The one i would like on a 45 is the vocal and instumental of In the neighbourhood ( on the avenue ).

Some great stuff up there that i havent heard before, especially Betty Renay and Soul connection. Personally, have been playing THE SUPERBS , BABY BABY ALL THE TIME . maybe eight times this morning .

Very rarely can i identify artists like those of you above , i do get a feel for a tune but its for the overall finished product ,It has to be exceptionally distinctive for me to be able to pick them out ,( maybe Esther Phillips ) One voice that is really hitting the spot for me recently is that of Inez Foxx, Back to the topic , for me the Barbara anDthe castles version is superior vocally , it is a far fuller orchestration and the backing singers ( the castles ) are far more distinctive in a perfect 60s girlie northern way , thus making it for me, the pick of the bunch.

Actually looks like its worth round about £150 -£200 based on a few previous sales ads on here
-
So, about forty quid then ?
-
Yes i love that as well , first heard it on a goldmine cd(northern soul satisfaction?) in the early nineties , so superior to the Vicky Nelson version in my opinion . no idea what its worth .
-
I would like to nominate Saxie Russell
-
I wasnt too keen on the guy either to be honest and he dosent seem to have a clue about the northern stuff , again he is definately a career driven type ,and used to be incredibly arrogant ,in this area he seems to have changed for the better . For me though his saving grace is his enthusiasm, i find it quite infectious . Thus ends my in depth character analysis of Mr Charles.

True enough Steve, however , i thought the fire exit was on the right hand side of the stage just before you went up the stairs? Remember one night the place had to be cleared due to a bomb scare around 1 am( turned out to be some locals mingling with the evacuated crowd to gain free admission ) first record on after the crowd re entered , Frankie(love man )Crocker Ton Of Dynamite ! Went along this morning , A suitable brief ceremony, It is inside , however the curve of the shopping mall follows the old station rd so it is in exactly the correct position . A million miles away from the wild nights of the seventies , but a small permanent blue plaque, marking the site. Long overdue and highly appropriate. I dont think i know you Drew, but thanks for making the effort.

Tonite - Northern Soul Bbc Living For The Weekend
Carty replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
I very much get the point about people doing northern industrial jobs, (not mining neccesarily) The crowd I went to the all nighters with in the seventies were mainly working in factories or on some kind of industrial apprentiships or similar , anyone not fitting this description would not quite fit at that time. There was a guy from Burnley i think used to frequent the record bar at wigan who used to pull out a pair of glasses to inspect a record he was interested in , so notable and strange was this behavior that he was nicknamed " The Proffessor " . At the time i paid no attention to this aspect of the scene, the sociological and racial stratification of its attendees (mainly white working class youth, the programme stated ) and the attendant social climate of the time , Looking back at a programme like that puts it into context . Did i ever conciously think at the time , that i was escaping at the weekend through the soul scene from a dreary day to day existence with few opportunities ? No. Was i in actual fact doing just that ? maybe , yes. -

I enjoyed it . -
Yes, they are definately prince of wales check, available with the red overcheck, or blue or without , Ruperts as i remember them were more of a greenish check unlike the actual bears bright yellow with big black check ( dont think i remember anyone wearing those apart from the bear himself , but you never know ) Does anyone remember in Stolen from Ivor or Justins in Manchester about 71,72 ish, as a sales gimmick they named different pants colours after different areas of the city and there was a massive skinhead cartoon the size of the whole window with the guys wearing Wythenshawe whites , Gorton greens, Salford stones ,Burnage browns etc...?

Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart 2014 London
Carty replied to a topic in Look At Your Box
Congratulations Nick! my advise , put it somewhere very safe and make no further descisions at this point . -
I agree with Paul tp, THIS ( soul source ) is the focal point nowardays, So much of what made attending the " weekly tribal gathering " essential can now be accessed on here, The darker aspects of the scene , so attractive and exciting back in the day hold far less appeal personally today. I attend soul nights nowardays maybe on a monthly basis on average , some nights i love it , other times i question what i am doing with my life . Because of the egos and potential profits involved , i cant ever see some kind of promoters coalition for the good of the scene happening ( and it probably would be good for the scene ) The only hope would be if a club emerged that was so good that you just had to be there or feel as if you had seriously missed out on something , if there were such a place , i would be there on a regular basis , but as nothing since the seventies has had that kind effect on me i feel maybe that ship has sailed .

South London Soul Train - Opinions Please On Young Soulies ?
Carty replied to Hipcity Hipster's topic in All About the SOUL
Sunny soul, i did not read any thing negative in your comments , if anything i found them positive and full of enthusiasm. -
Oh ok . so he tried to get a further reduction in price once he had recieved it by saying it was cracked ? then once you asked him to return it there was no crack. you didnt mention this in the original post .
-
Ok, First of all , the fact that he offered you a lower price and then tried to get the postage free does not make him a bad buyer in my book, he is a Haggler . nowt wrong with that is there? you have the right to say no ( like you did )and if you are not up for this kind of stuff , you could advertise as No offers ! S econdly, he said there was a crack in it and when he sent it back there was no crack . So he has returned the item intact. Was it the record you sent him ? the exact same copy ? if so , wheres the scam , ? what has he made out of that ? if he had sent you a different copy back or a different copy with a crack in it then fair enough , i,m with you, but in this instance , i really dont feel the guy deserves Naming and shaming. B.T.W . I have no idea who the guy is so am not writing this as a friend or associate .

Tmg Or Us Original, Which Would You Go For Generally?
Carty replied to Soulstu's topic in All About the SOUL
For me there is an allure in both, As you rightly say the idea of someone buying the U.S.stuff back in the day and its otherworldly feel , this is stuff i identify strongly with, British releases also have a magic about them do they not , although different in nature to the feelings American stuff creates ( who feels it ,knows it ) possibly even more potent, not exactly sure why , but there is something about the font used on the early tmg releases that does it for me They have a beauty and physical quality of production that deteriorated all the way to the mp3 , its a lot more than that i know , and it applies to releases other than motown of course. There is for me also an otherworldly feel about the U.k 45s after all for me they were released a few years before i became aware of them, probably played at hip clubs in swinging sixties Britain,or whatever, Put a u.k. tamla motown 65 release alongside say a 72 release and its Bond street against Primark. like i say am not exactly sure why , but its there . Of one thing there is no doubt , the U.S. 45S are cheaper.
