  1. Ike and Tina Turner spread there selves out a bit label wise , Sue , Kent , Loma , Tangerine , Sonja , Warner Bros , Modern , Philles , Cenco , Blue Thumb , Innis , Pompeii , Minit , A&M, United Artists , and on ........ Again ,Nowhere near the original posts list , Gregory Isaacs , Alton Ellis and Vin Gordon must have all used over a dozen labels each as well .
  2. While I agree that the Oldies All nighters had a detrimental affect on the Saturday ,and therefore the newer 60s discoveries scene , especially the night after , but also , lots of people got into the habit of attending on a monthly basis instead of weekly , specifically for the First Friday in the month . The thing about those Oldies all nighters though was that after the first couple , the place was absolutely bursting at the seams and the atmosphere was out of this world , by this time , people were getting in through the roof , through back doors , fire exits , and it felt like they let in as many as turned up at the door .( as the rumors of closures grew over time , maybe it was a matter of make as much as possible before the whole thing ends) in hindsight this was probably a disaster waiting to happen , but at the time , it was a hell of a blow out !
  3. This relentless recycling of the same old stuff from professional Northerner Maconie is painful to watch , didnt he say somewhere last week that the Wigan All nighters started at 11 ? a small thing maybe , but not a mistake anyone who attended would have made. Richard is the guy that should be fronting this stuff in my opinion ,Also when the scene was at its heights , he was at the helm , and has been actively involved in various ways all the way through , So what if he has made a few bob along the way , criticizing this sounds like sour grapes. But I guess we are stuck with ole Stewpot.
  4. Thanks for pointing that out , just seen the clip , very strange to say the least .

Alan Day was a cracking guy , in early WIgan days he was regularly in the record bar , if ever I needed to know what the current tune being played was , I would ask him or a couple of tried and tested other older lads , never any edge to him , even when asking about what must have seemed obvious , remember asking him about one that was being spun , he said "Its Doris Troy , I,ll do Anything ." Everyone has to hear a thing for the first time , and he recognised this , Mr All nighter ? Fitting Accolade .
  6. As mentioned above , Paul was very much a part of the Manchester / Wigan record bar crowd , always great company, and excited by his latest 45 aquisition . Sad news . R.I.P.
  7. Just back from baths/sauna , cycled there and back , couple of weight sessions each week , plus regular gardening and walking , slowing down though nowardays , like you say its an ongoing battle , my experience is , the more you do , the easier it gets , the better you feel . can echo the sentiments around mental health , most forms of exercise lift my mood .

R.I.P. Tina , Particularly love the many early Sue 45s.
  9. I am ok with it as long as I dont suspect that it has happened , once I know this is what has been done , the song never really works for me again . Never suspected this was the case with James bounty , but now you mention it ...... I think maybe there is a difference between a producer doing it and a dj , at the stage the producer is involved it is not yet the finished product , by the time the dj has it , by speeding up /slowing down , they are changing the finished work as it was intended to be , this may not be the case with acetates etc , but I mean with records that have at least made the demo stage .
  10. James Browns Night Train on U.K. Sue was pitched up , I read somewhere to make it shorter to fit in with radio play times , thé one that confuses me is Ann Caudell longing for you , the reissues and a lot of youtube clips seem very obviously speeded up , it just sounds so much better (imo of course ) taken down a few revs . does anyone know any more about this ?
  11. Was over there in late Autumn without having seen this ,so over a year after this pic was taken, the tree in its square planter box was still there. there was another identical tree on the other side of the shops entrance . The planter was easily moved 3ft to the right to give clear view of the plaque , may I suggest to anyone who finds themselves in that shopping mall in the future to do likewise and maybe they will get fed up of putting it back .
  12. Stayed at a Hostel on W 113st in Harlem on several occasions between 2008 and 2012 , Between visits I noticed the record label N.Y.C.S. ( Flame N King , Oh Happy Day) had a W 113st address (303 W113 st ), so next time I was over , I took a short walk down to see it .... There was a 301 and a 305, but no 303 , instead a fenced off space exactly one house wide , looked like it had been demolished . Got speaking to a neighbor about what happened to 303 , and after being asked "Your'e not Jewish are you man ?" ( ie , a potential developer/gentryfier maybe ?) was told they knocked it down so the buildings either side could Breathe !?! Unusual as this was a row of Harlem Rowhouses (terraces). I would imagine at this point the site may have now been redeveloped . W113st is only 3 blocks from the top end of Central park , however , even closer to 303 W 113st is Morningside Park ( maybe only 100 yards away , This park has a more local feel to it , definetley a more Harlem vibe than Central park , I have always wondered which park it was that is alluded to in the song, guess I will never know . Incidentally , Harry Houdini lived at 278 W113st.
  13. 5 Stairsteps "Playgirls Love " Windy C . Best fiver you will ever spend .
  14. Hmmm .... I thought you were talking about selling your house and possessions , now I am thinking it may be your record collection you are considering what to do with.
  15. Also , if you were to rent out , you could put all your possessions in one bedroom , lock it securely ,letting any tenant know that room is not part of the rental agreement . Unless you need to sell stuff to raise funds for the trip , you are one good tenant away from Freedom , Good luck mate , I have done the Big Getaway myself on several occasions back in the day ,some fantastic times , let us know on here how you are getting on , All the best , Mike.

Get A Record adaptor ( best if it is not one of the more brittle tri centres in my experience for this particular method , as my experience was that the paper hole punch would not go through these . of course , a drill could also be used . ) and using a paper hole punch, take a chunk out of one of the sides of the centre hole , put the adaptor in the disc , push the spindle into the extra space in the centre hole , and line up and adjust record adaptor to counterbalance the off centre disc .

I initially thought tens of thousands was way over the top , however , when you take all the different presses ,demos , and there must also be several thousand releases from places other than the U.S. and UK, Not to mention Album releases Worldwide , it soon starts to add up .

I Always felt She (They ) were underappreciated somehow ," 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ( Count the days )" Is one of my all time favourite discs after picking up a copy on Direction in 1973 . Tightrope of course speaks for itself , parts of that disc make me feel I am actually there on the Tightrope with her . The one I feel never quite gets its recognition is "No Stranger to love " For me , this is an all time classic ,Hauntingly Atmospheric , perfect vocal delivery , full sound . Rest In Peace .
  21. Lost for words .
  22. Hilarious clip ! saw it on yt a month or so ago . Honestly cant recall having any thoughts in the 70s about what was happening in the South .
  23. Thanks for posting the link , Very desirable , after reading the link , this must go to the top in terms of rarity , if it made over £400 in 2008 wonder what it is worth today ?
  24. This was a £1.00 record in the mid seventies ( thats how much I got mine for ) very common , after selling up in the early 80,s I started to attempt to re a quire some titles about a decade or so ago , at the time this was about £ 60.00 , as I had known it sell for so much cheaper , I declined thinking more would come along , They did of course but all more expensive than the last , yes around £150.00 , even £200.00 nowardays . (For the stock copy ) . Still only have a Stardust copy . My experience of this record coming up for sale is that there are far fewer demos than issues , and both the white soul demos sell for more than the issue .
