  1. Pete , i have to disagree with you there , The record was played around three three times a night for months at the Saturday All Nighters , fairly sure Rushbrooke played it . It was not a Searling spin at the time as it was not exclusive enough . I went to almost all the Wigan all nighters around this time. Bought a copy of this for £ 25.00 from Rod or Dave who had found four copies mid 1980. unfortunately sold it shortly after for a similar amount .
  2. It was massive at Wigan at some point , maybe early 80, can hear it now , the bell like instrumentation booming around the place . maybe

  4. Brenda Holloway definately up there , but how can you ever pick one ? or ten? a hundred even .so many would be missed out .
  5. What a great couple of pictures ! thanks for posting .
  6. Final proof ( If any was needed ) that Manchester is the centre of the soul universe .
  7. Remember the Saturdays in 1980 well , and the contrast to the oldies allnighters which were unmissable ( attended every one from Feb 76 to June 81 ) Never really realised at the time that the place was dying and arguably , the oldies allnighters may have been a factor , as has been commented earlier ( ten years earlier ) The record bar had become a kind of social club and there were weekly rumours of the place being shut down. Some sounds I remember from that time , Pacesetters ( Admirations ) You left me , saw several copies for sale for £25.00 at that time, The Other Ones , The Two Of Us . Frank Foster , Harlem Rumble . Arin Demain Silent Treatment, L Allen , Cant we talk it over. Lockettes I Love the boy who lives next door , They all take me right back to those nights whenever I hear them . A t one point , mid to late 1980 i think , the Mecca Highand room had re opened for 8 till 2 sessions on a Saturday night so that was a regular starting point before Wigan once again . Remember getting lifts over to Wigan from Blackpool and arriving at maybe 1.30 to find the outside deserted ,but a warm welcome always awaited inside . another sound from those days as mentioned earlier Volcanoes ( Cashmeres ) Showstopper . There was a guy that used to go in the record bar round about that time who used to stand on a chair and announce what he had for sale like a market trader , anyone remember him? ( bet hes a regular on here ).
  8. Will p.m you .
  9. Jimmy Ruffin On The Avenue backed with Holland and Dozier In The Neighbourhood
  10. Great record though , Wigan 1980, Rushbrooke , often get it up on youtube
  11. I particularly love the 64 -65 period , Girl, why you wanna make me blue, The way you do the things you do ,The girls alright with me , Since i lost my baby, and it was all good in my mind right through the psychedelic/ social commentary phase of the later sixties to maybe the very early seventies , stuff like the masterpiece album , i used to" try" to like it , but it always seemed a bit overwrought . Right through from their early doo wop type sound to the concept album type stuff later on , they truly reflect the sound of the time they were released , oh to be back in 1964.
  12. Yes, well I would also have loved that album to have been made by her and feel she was cynically edged out , i cannot however deny that for me , the finished product is a masterpiece .
  13. Well , no accounting for taste , but that album hits the spot for me . I,m not suggesting that Amy Winehouse should be played at Northern or Rare soul nights , just that dont let the fact that its not rare , and 50 years old blind you to the fact that very occasionally someone comes along that that oozes the very essence of soulfulness . Also the Dap Kings instrumentation , that is the real deal in any bodys book .
  14. Amy Wine house, Back to Black is one of the most soulful recordings ever made .

Also noted a letter from Iain Mc Cartney from Scotland , bottom of the page . Could anyone confirm that this is the same Iain McCartney of "Ask The Anorack " fame in the Manchester United fanzine "United we Stand " and Author of maybe twenty or more in depth books on United . I know Iain had a passion for soul and at one point I was trading Northern tapes with him for United memoribilia . He expressed an interest to me about writing a book based around Manchester in the seventies about characters who lived the Football by day then the all nighter scene after dark . dont think it ever got written , very interesting to see him ( i think its him ) crop up on this letters page .
  16. Just been reading about these on wired .co.uk it stated " prices not yet announced but expected to reach several thousand pounds "
  17. Never grows old , had to play it twice , wonderful , agree with the above .
  18. Like was said earlier , it was a massive Wigan sound in 75 and i think that was also the year the soul galore /sousann/call me pressings were made

Looking for a copy of the above in at least vg+ condition please , ( & realistic price ) Thanks , Mike.
  20. It sounds like maybe Mr Charles has misinterpreted the scenes lukewarm (at best) reaction towards him as having racist undertones rather than confronting the reality that he is hopelessly out of his depth in this sphere and people can see straight through him. In a previous post a few months back i spoke in favour of his enthusiasm on his radio shows , this latest statement ( no doubt inspired by that Jazzy B quote years ago) is just plain and simply wrong .
  21. Interesting letter , love the 6 minute plus version of" Living for the city" on the album ," Wow ! , New York ! , just like i always pictured it .. skyscrapers and everything ...."
  22. For me, the best on Shrine is Cavaliers , Do what i want . ( may be also the rarest ? )
  23. My friends all tell me you,re the cheatin kind, If only i,d look , a better girl i,d find , they cant recognise my vital signs , the more I try to forget you , the more you remain on my mind ....,
