Show us your great photos 2021

Maybe a subject for discussion on a new thread but the off road bikes are a real problem on the moor opposite my house, there are signs everywhere saying they are not permitted which always has me wondering where do people draw the line as to where the law doesn't apply to them. Paths are becoming unwalkable in some places. Another factor is unless you know the footpaths it is becoming harder for walkers from out of the area I would imagine to distinguish what is a legitimate path and what is a cycle track These photos don't really convey the amount of damage actually being done. I have spoken to two local landowners who have both been threatened with violence confronting bikers. I used to have less of a problem with mountain bikers but on some paths and one in particular that I have walked for the last twenty years which passes through National Trust land because of the nature of the path and restricted area for the path to deviate I can easily see within the next couple of years it being too dangerous to walk. Don't get me wrong I respect peoples right to roam but once water gathers in the tracks left by cyclists or bikers it becomes a slippery slope (no pun intended) to a mud bath and once that happens from what I have witnessed first hand said people move to the left or right and what was once a small footpath becomes a bog to be traversed. Footpaths were once just that and no one I guess could have predicted the rise in Mountain biking as a leisure pursuit, I don't see an easy solution to an ever growing problem and can understand to some extent bikers not seeing anything wrong in how they enjoy the countryside but I honestly believe some areas will eventually become impassable even for them. apologies for the rant,

What is your first record purchase of 2021?

Good Times Jerry Butler, seller had one on Uk Fontana Mint £5 cheaper than everyone else but accepting offers so cheekily I offered £8 which he refused and promptly relisted at £14.99 . Kicked myself and bought from someone else graded conservative VG+ for £9.99.

Show us your great photos (2020)

A few to end the year from walks in the last couple of days, the tunnel one is the of the subway to Stubbins Halt station on the ELR , you can just about make out the blue tiles, I've passed the large tree one many times and never noticed the size of the branches which are the size of tree trunks on there own.

		Considering paid Mixcloud 'Select' shows

Speaking purely as a listener I wouldn't pay to listen. I already find it annoying that you now cannot backtrack when listening if someone plays a tune you like which I assume you can still do if you pay. I'd be disappointed if someone like Mal whose shows I listen to became unavailable unless I paid as his themed selections are always an interesting mix and much enjoyed. Maybe in time we will have no choice but to pay if not enough people voluntarily cough up, hope it does not come to that

As we are coming to the end of another year and a particularly difficult one at that I'd just like to say thank you to all who have contributed to this thread for the brightening of days with your great photographs. I've always had a respect for nature but watching this thread over the last few years has made me realise how little I actually know in regards to actual names of plants, trees and birds. Thanks to this thread I at least now know not all little brown birds are Sparrows even if I still can't recognise what they are. I was actually quite proud of myself last week walking through a local woodland when I spotted a small bird climbing up and down the tree trunks, I thought I bet that's a Tree Creeper, checking my book when I returned home I was 99% certain I was correct , everything tallied with what I saw. This has been the first time I have had a bird feeder in my garden, sadly not attracting a great variety of garden birds but enjoyable non the less. It saw little use in the first few days when I became hopeful one morning when about half a dozen Goldfinches which had been nesting in the hedgerow opposite descended. I'm no expert as why after feeding on that day they then vanished. Since then the only visitors I've seen are Sparrows and a couple of Blue Tits and a Robin. I've enjoyed watching the larger birds trying to perch on the fat ball feeder with little success so along with the Magpies and a couple of Jackdaws two fat Wood Pigeons regularly hoover up anything that drops to the floor. Only downside to the feeder is the amount of bird shit on my garden gate, maybe I'll have to re site the feeder to the bottom of the garden, I think they use the gate to perch as they wait to use the feeder. The photo of the Stag was one of those "bugger" moments when I had gone out without my camera which although meeting the needs for which I bought it is totally inadequate for shooting wildlife photos though the closeness of the Stag I could have got afar better photograph with said camera. Then again it could have been worse I could have been the bloke who pulled alongside me whilst I was taking the photo, he had on the passenger seat his camera with a lens the size that which Steve has posted pics of, he was well pissed off, his battery had run out and he thought his spare was charged which it wasn't. Thanks again to all for posting.

Lisa Stansfield 8-3-1 how much ?

Looking at his feedback there will be another for certain, £92 was the highest price he's achieved so far for Lisa. In the past month alone he's sold five Cliff Nobles, four Turley Richards, plus two Barbara Coopers. Always from his own collection of course. I guess whilst people keep buying them he'll keep selling them, he was at one time selling Lillie Bryant as well.

Lisa Stansfield 8-3-1 how much ?

I had a Lisa for sale belonging to mate earlier this year ,rightly or wrongly at the time going price was around £50, the week he gave me some records to sell one was sold on ebay for I think £148 if memory serves. Out of respect I told him even though I thought it a ridiculous price, I held on to it eventually selling it on to another mate for I think £70, may have been £60 ,that could have been his initial offer. Both parties were happy with the deal. If the Lisa has people steamed up he also had a Sonic Wax Tribute that I was surprised to see was offered on Discogs for £50, I told him it was likely he had no chance of achieving that price, it is still in the back of my box, I've never had the nerve to offer it for sale, imagine my surprise to see one on ebay last week offered "buy it now "at £100. Last I looked it was surprise surprise still there. I'm well aware it's probably the ultimate Marmite record on the scene but if you think you couldn't make a bad record worse let me assure you you can. Before anyone questions my mates taste due to the two above the records they were bought on behalf of his wife, amongst the others he wanted to sell were Angel Baby Darrell Banks on Red Atlantic and Major Lance Ain't No Soul on British Colombia. The one thing that pleases me about ebay at the moment and there isn't much is apparently in what I thought was a pretty ordinary collection I have plenty of "original" "in demand", "rare" ,"mega rare", "under the radar" Northern records which despite their rarity are under a tenner, who knew?

		Discogs - really daft

At the start of the first lockdown in April I contacted a seller who had a record I was after that came up as unavailable in the UK. I thought it was maybe something to do with Covid so I contacted him asking could he let me know when he was selling in the Uk again. I got a reply within an hour, he was unaware he wasn't selling in the Uk, didn't know how the message had appeared on his page . A couple of days later he contacted me to say it was sorted and should I still want the record he would wave postage costs as a thank you. I am aware of the recent changes for sellers which was discussed on another thread which are apparently causing some sellers problems but it's always worth asking.

Dave Godin A Northern Soul Part 2

I bought and have finished the book, my initial interest stemmed from being an avid reader of Dave's column in B&S and buying quite a number of the records he recommended further proof of which emerged reading the various top tens in book. I also was also one of the many people who received a tape off him as an impressionable 17yr old after writing to ask could he recommend any records as I had recently started listening to Deep Soul, later most of the tunes on that tape made up the majority of Deep Soul Treasures Vol1. Back to the book, it is as stated above a very well produced book, great quality, plenty of pics, lots of interesting stories. I was initially worried that the book would be very wordy and too much concentration would be focused on his political and lifestyle views which do take up a large portion of the book but not in a preachy or academic way. I found it to be very honest, I got the impression rightly or wrongly as a long time admirer of Dave Godin the book gave such a truthful portrait of the man that in parts I found myself actively disliking him. Enjoyed reading the book, learnt quite a bit, would be interested to see anyone's views who have read the book and knew Dave Godin personally, not I hasten to add due to any doubts as to the truthfulness of the book merely to hear the views of someone who knew him first hand and what they made of the book. Great read, would recommend.

Has Coronavirus sounded the death bells for NS live scen

Personally I'm hoping the break will do the scene overall some good though I doubt it. I think for every promoter and Dj who calls it a day there will probably be two waiting to jump in. The problem I see with that scenario is what were good established nights and Dj's who had experience and knew what they were doing they will be replaced by people thinking it's easy. I know several Dj's and promoters as I'm sure we all do but the feeling I get from talking to them over the years is a lot of punters think events happen by magic not realising there is an awful lot of work involved in putting a night on, setting up and breaking down the equipment, promotion, in some cases getting the room ready, all taking time. Maybe some will have enjoyed the break and wonder is it worth the effort purely for the love of the music as we know very few are in it or in fact make a profit once the venue and Dj's have been paid. I'd like to think scene once re started the emphasis will shift to quality over quantity but I doubt that will happen. Maybe the venues that survive will be only too willing to entertain a Soul night needing to recoup lost revenue and I'm pretty sure there will be no shortage of would be promoters ready to put on a night. Peoples opinions of what constitutes a good night will always differ, for myself I've missed seeing friends that I only see on the scene and one venue in particular but I can't say hand on heart I've missed going to a soul night mainly I guess due to starting buying again ,being furloughed then retiring giving me more time to listen to podcasts, play my own records and chat regularly with a few close friends from the scene about the music. If I could have one wish granted for when things get back to whatever normal we see it would be for a soul club in striking distance with the emphasis on "soul", not being able to dance as I once did a convivial night or even an afternoon not necessarily at the weekend spent in the company of like minded people in an upstairs room somewhere playing music from every genre Deep to Ska ,RnB, 60's Soul, Funk etc etc , can't see it happening unless it's Wednesday Afternoon round at mine on the decking weather permitting, bring your own drinks 🤔

I think you are right though I don't understand the logic in some sales I've seen. Since retirement I've spent a fair bit of time trolling through Ebay and other sales sites cross referencing prices on Discogs and Musicstack etc. I started a few months ago watching prices of records I own and have recently bought. A few months ago I bought Jay and the Americans Living Above Your Head, near mint in company sleeve, in the last month there have been several on the Ebay, one went for £28, a us demo went for I think it was just shy of £30 then low and behold last week one went for £125, reading the description I couldn't see any difference from mine which I think I paid £23 for. Looking on Discogs several for sale the dearest £49 near mint. Is it laziness, auction fever or just plain too much money. I think you are also right when you say I knew I was paying over the odds slightly for a record but there was just the one on left Discogs after seeing the others go. Fear of missing out gripped me so I bought it, as these things go a few came up on ebay in the following weeks selling for around what I paid and now there are two on discogs for half what I paid. Still can't get my head around the £125 for Jay and The Americans though.

The Topics Booking Up Baby was it booted?

Hi all, I'm far ,far from an expert on these matters so hoping you guys can help. I've done searches on the net albiet not exhaustive as to whether this copy found in Lou's record box is a boot or not, I couldn't find any mention of a boot neither could I find any Matrix info though I have since been told there is one so my gut feeling is this one is going off the rest of the records in her box. Any help appreciated. In the deadwax is etched what looks like a small GK, ,small PP or could be PR, and 2-51085-PRI on the Giving Up side, 86 on the Booking side. Thanks for any help,

Yes I only look on UK eBay, obviously I look at sales on here and other well known sites but I'd have to say the only other ebay I've looked at was Belgium as I had a few popcorn wants. I have bought a few things from Europe but at the level I'm currently buying postage from the US wouldn't make much sense though I might take a closer look, Ummm Jock Mitchell, that doesn't make any sense at all.
