This made me smile and brought back memories of my dear departed Mum and Dad who used the term, not heard it used for a long time, thanks for the memory Russ

I had a quick look to see if it will be repeated over the next week, couldn't see it, seeing the comments above I'd probably give it a miss now anyway, next week I think it was on Thursday around ten they have Soul Sisters Soul Brothers, mentioned George Benson ,Aretha etc so probably just stuff that made the charts in the 80's but I could be wrong. Can't remember the night but a Blues one was also listed.

Was this any good, is it worth looking out for a repeat?

I like em', I do a monthly cd comp that I give out to friends more or less works out at 30%from tunes I see on Playlists, 30% I hear on Podcasts, 30% I find trawling You Tube the final 10% is made up of stuff I hear out and a few well known ones. I like to see what is being played in other parts of the country as I stay pretty local, I don't do all nighter's even though one of the best is on my doorstep (sorry Len) so it's nice to see and hear what is being played there too . I've had loads of great tunes brought to my attention many of which have become firm favourites through reading playlists many of which would probably have passed me by. Plus with lists like the one from the Horse and Groom not being 100% Northern you get to hear stuff you would probably overlook on the likes of You Tube searching for more dance related tunes. Then again you could say I should get out more cos' there's most definitely nothing better than hearing the sounds in a venue over a good well set up sound system.

Yes, I hit post before I had finished then thought twice about posting, I thought I had deleted post when I edited but obviously not, must be more careful in future, good thread though, some interesting views in the end just didn't think mine were valid or of interest.

I think it depends on why you own certain records and what those records are, we all know the pleasure to be found in just looking at a particular label, holding the record in your hands, the emotional bond that you have for certain records whether it be a memory of time, place or even person. Then you have to consider the act of actually collecting records and the lengths some will go to for instance to get a full run of a label, the various different issues, pressing plants etc. I'm as far away an expert on record prices and what holds it's value and what doesn't as I am from Mars but taking into account the age range of people on the scene and current prices for apparently not so rare records if I was in possession of

Not being argumentative here as this is something that has puzzled me for some time, I could be being a bit thick,slow or whatever but does this happen. Looking at it from a paying customers point of view I would rightly or wrongly assume a promoter books a Dj because he likes what they play having heard them somewhere else or by reputation, also because knowing his regular punters will like what said dj plays. Why then would he have to dictate what the dj plays, doesn't make sense to me or as I say am I missing something.

It's all about the question, the obvious answer like it or not as soon as they put a record on the deck they are D'jing , if you had asked when does a Dj become a good or respected Dj that's a harder question to answer. I've been asked a few times would I fancy doing a spot always refusing because although at one time I had some pretty decent tunes (nothing remotely rare or in demand) and could easily have put a set together much the same as anyone with a fair few records could it would have been no different to what's already being played by the majority of dj's out there so what would be the point apart from possibly ego. I've seen a good friend grow from if you have to use the term "wanna be" in a Northern sense to in my opinion a great dj. His journey was one of disappointment, hope, despair, empty dance floors, playing what was expected to finally taking his own path , searching out tunes in some cases yes paying a lot of money, not because rarity meant quality but to get the tunes he himself liked and wanted to play and hoped others would respond to. Even the dj's at the top of the tree so to speak sometimes have to play to the dancefloor, something I witnessed myself not long ago, speaking to said dj after the gig he said with an obvious tone of defeat "nobody wants to play to an empty floor". For me a good dj becomes a great dj when they can mix the rare with the popular, the cheap with the expensive, I'm sure we've all at one time or another thought as a dj leaves the decks that was a cracking set, I'm always one for going up to the dj in those circumstances and letting them know how much I enjoyed the set, going by the reaction more often than not it would seem few give feedback face to face. I'm a prodigious downloader and cd compiler and find myself constantly amazed by the amount of stuff out there, the great tunes that I never hear played out, as people have said on this thread there's a vast amount of tunes out there, I have no idea of price or rarity of 99'9% of them so to any "wanna be's "out there I'd repeat as stated by others do the ground work , be brave, be different, if it don't work let it go .
