  1. I've never had a bad experience with people I buy off on this site. (Touch wood!). Without exception they are on time, well packed and very much as described. Always had quick responses to queries etc... so I have given excellent feedback. People on here are good people! A general thanks to everyone I've bought from.
  2. I'd love nothing more than to come out to Santa Cruz - it's raining cats and dogs here in grey Rotherham!
  3. Thanks for the heads up Sean, I'll record it cos I'm off out. Friday night music docs are great on BBC4 - public broadcasting at its best. The ones on Muscle Shoals and Bobby Bland were freakin excellent!

Baffles me too... I LOVE American pressings, they're a bit more sexy and other worldly...and they are what you would have bought from a record shop in Detroit in '66. UK issues are a bit dull and post-war austere looking IMHO - Decca and Pye and Fontana etc all look a bit dull to me (the vinyl is usually nice and sturdy tho). I don't get excited about any other overseas pressings either. If a US soul record is on anything other than a US label, then it's not an original to me. When I buy a single I'm buying a piece of 60s American culture. This is probably heresy but I'd have no qualms in swapping a Darrell Banks Stateside demo for a Revilot demo - it's not about the money. I hope I haven't upset a lot of people here but I can't lie to you..... and I like the big middles!
  5. A very wise SS member once said you can judge the quality and good taste of a person's soul collection by the amount of Motown in it. This has been a really great thread. There's a very high chance that I will love the number one tune!....Happy days.
  6. Mart, Did this ever get counted up and an official favourite announced? Then we could do Soul Source's favourite northern soul tune!!!!....good luck with that one. Stu
  7. Is this him? Not on you tube so just a label scan. UPDATE: Done a bit more digging - looks like he's a blue eyed guy from Chicago who released a few singles way back when. Best known for singing the lead on a mawkish Chicago Tourist Board song in 1985. Apparently spent the 80s, 90s and 00s as a jingles singer. So, my record would probs be worth more without his signature!...it's just a WOL. Another classic SoulStu thread!! kt f-in f Stu
  8. This is my fave - short, messy, fast, tuneful!!
  9. Anyone have any info on Lee Montgomery the soul singer? I picked up a J.J. Barnes record at a do tonight and it seems to have been authenticated and signed by him on the cover and it says "Montt" in pen on the label. Just makes my cheapo purchase a little more interesting that's all.
  10. The twot who paid ยฃ255 for this deserves to lose his money - must be thick. If I see the guy reply that he's unsure if it's an original then I run a mile.... or at least spend some time trying to check it out...and then run a mile. I can only assume that as the price starts to soar, then everyone just assumes it's a valuable piece of vinyl and it snowballs. However it's so easy to find out if it's a boot or not. I found out in about 2 minutes when I checked mine, just by googling the title.... the massively muddy sound and off centre, photocopied text is a bit of a giveaway as well. I'd have sold mine for half that!
  11. Polk Salad Annie was played out in Sheffield last night - didn't sound too out of place in the middle of a few RnB based records - certainly danceable. Not for me tho.
  12. Aren't the Oriole releases really desirable? I remember reading something in Record Collector years ago... Mike & The Modifiers and the Valadiers and all that?
  13. So much quality Tamla for a few quid. Just picked this up for the price of a big mac!
  14. Now we've established that it did get a play at Wigan - Quick Joey Small by the Kasenetz Katz Singing Orchestral Circus of course!!!! Can't bring myself to add a sound file or youtube link.
  15. Bloody hell! Quick Joey Small! I've got it somewhere on US Buddah - a mate (hah!) of mine offloaded it on me with a few others many years ago. I played it for a few bars and took it straight off - never again. How can that ever have been judged by the powers that be as a northern soul record? In that case, any record that has human beings on it counts as northern. Maybe it was played just before Dave Evison went for that long awaited ear syringing appointment.
  16. Broadways - You Just Don't Know...just can't help but play it twice every time - magic! ...and Tell Me Baby - Karmello Brooks - it's only 1 minute 50-odd so no problem to play and replay and replay!

Dead, dead simple surely - IT'S NOT AN EVENT!!!! ....it's invite only, not for the general public. end of problem. You're welcome.
  18. Cue mid tempo backing - drenched in soul.... "Bobby wants to be the heavyweight champ But his dreams got to go a lot further............ (you know it's coming) than 'Under the Streetlamp'" Wow! reyt evocative... as a no mark from Mansfield I can dig that! (just about my favourite record btw)

Thanks for keeping this open Mike - for us simple punters it's a very interesting thread. There's stuff that goes on behind the scenes that we're totally unaware of and it certainly gives an insight into how defensive northern promoters are about 'their' venues. Maybe rightly so (but not in this case!) if they're always on the verge of losing out to disco nights etc. Makes a nice change from 'look at this idiot dancing at Blackpool' topics.
  20. Excellent! - nearly every topic I Iearn something new. Ta Byrney (good point btw).
  21. Yep - When I used to listen to sounds of the sixties regularly years ago Brian Mathew used to play some really interesting 60s beat and psychedelic stuff etc hidden between the Frankie Vaughans and Engelberts and whatnot - B-sides and all that, but the northern content has shot up in recent years. It's very interesting and pleasing to hear these 45s in conjunction with other genres of the same era - a lot of the northern sides sound so rich and strong and really jump out of the speakers compared to others.
  22. Hmmm.. I went from 79-81 and can't remember all-niters - dayers were always 2 till 10 from what I can remember (which is not much). I bet they were great though, it was a fantastic venue - a world of total soul, I had the bestest times there.
  23. Ethics - Look At Me Now/Think About Tomorrow on Vent - cheap, cheap, cheap......excellent, excellent, excellent
  24. I always wondered what the deal was with black or silver text - did one come first or was it just arbitrary? I (and probably everybody) has a mixture of both. Never seen a black and grey label beforeโ€ฆ once again I learn something new from SS.
  25. Mine arrived today Ray, next day service, well impressed. It feels nice and substantial and the shape is perfect for putting the records on and off without catching on the centres. I got fed up of my old adapter tumbling over the slip mat every time I took a record off!... not any more. Oh... and it looks sooo cool! Stu
