Very much in agreement with the views echoed regarding Betty Boo, "Say it isn't so"...Great track

Best Northern Soul Production Teams.....?
Some superb production teams mentioned, but from a "Northern" Soul perspective, the Hestor / Wylie partnership takes the plaudits for me

Al Kent-The way you've been acting lately-Ric-Tic......A 45 that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on first hearing, and still does today

Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
I bet you can't name them all

Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
Dave Greenhill, Stuart Tyler,Shane Cox, and as already mentioned Des Parker......Whilst they entertain on a regular basis at SHS, London they play "Proper Northern" with both imagination, and fervour........very underrated, yet very, very good

Under Rated Records ?
A very good point Phil, particularly with reference to "inverted snobbery", and whilst certainly not criticising the rare element with regards to playlists in general, it only goes to prove by virtue of a lot of the 45's featured, that there are many great records that stay under the radar purely because they are deemed "cheap"......Great thread once again I might add

Toots And The Maytals 100 Club
I remember such a scenario back in 1972 ish Bristol Top Rank, they were late and we had to get the train back to Newport, so missed half their performance.....seems to be a theme, with regard to "timekeeping"

Over Rated Records
Whilst I'm a Detroit vinyl collector, several items will never take their place in my own collection, Wombat, Getting on life, Burning Bush, Keeps on Burning, and Tim Tam & the Turn ons,Wait a minute......Absolute dirge......well IMHO anyway

- News: Who are the Great Soul Deejays?
TBH over the last almost 40 years of attending "Northern do's", I've heard some stupendous vinyl, played by some very influential DJ's, inclusive of the classic "spinners" already mentioned, and current entertainers" such as messers Dobson and Dyson remain undoubtedly amongst the leaders of refreshing the current playlists so to speak, however I wish to put a slightly different angle on the original post, as interpreted from the Deejay perspective! Whilst I'm pretty "liberal" with regard my overall choice of a listening perspective, I attended a local Soul night , yesterday and whilst I've often taken for granted, both playlists and the DJ's "performance", realised that sometimes, certain DJ's are taken for granted.... However.Jerry Hipkiss AKA Hippo impressed me from a different perspective, that I'd probably dismissed from a total DJ'ing performance, and along with his long time buddy and Soul associate Paul O'brian , totally impressed me with the actual Art of Deejaying! ...... Both .Awesome entertainment.....and really enjoyable- Does Area Matter?
I don't think I'd fancy a Soul night where you are currently based Russ- Sad News Bob Babbitt Has Passed Away.
Another very sad piece of news. R.I.P Sir......- Dream Live Act To See
Deon Jackson.- Hear That Beat
To be honest Pete, had I not known some of the Philly items it would be quite easy to confuse some of them with being Detroit productions, so I suppose ii could be a case of the "Chicken and the egg" with regard to my earlier point of mimicking certain riffs, in as much as who was actually mimicking who?- Hear That Beat
Hi Dave, with regard to the Vocanos tracks, Storm Warning/Laws of love, and I believe A Lady's man are the 3 "alleged" Detroit recordings, there maybe more, but as you rightly say the links/connections between several US cities and Detroit make it difficult to substantiate.......Great though......makes the mind boggle Regards wilxy- Hear That Beat
Hi Dave, I was led to believe the guitar riffs on the backbeat as you so rightly describe, was an original Detroit "thing" mimicked in the likes of Philadelphia in the wake of the popularity of the Motor City sound? Irrespective superb thread, and as Tricky mentions earlier, several of the Artctic tracks were produced by Mike Terry and recorded in Detroit, inclusive of at least three of the Volcanoes 45's......I'd be genuinely interested in any further information with regard to any other Arctic or any other Philly product recorded in Detroit. Regards wilxy- What About This
I must say, those Sharon Jones/Dapp Kings tracks are awesome, and would certainly entertain me wherever! Please advise where the CD's are available from- Funky Soul
Great thread this!!!!and whilst I'd agree, that several styles have done and still have there part in the overall "scene" itself, individuals championing (in this case) the funk edged "cause" to the degree where solid one hour sets of it, whilst probably including a few stand out tracks within their set, lose the impetus by virtue of the weaker sounds they play along side them. Having listened to most of the soundclips within the thread, there are IMHO undoubtedly a few really nice pieces of music...... however there are also some more very average tracks........In my very humble opinion.....Alas respectfully.....Each to their own- Funky Soul
Irrespective Russ, and whilst not being neither dismissive of your enthusiasm nor your taste in music, people vote with their feet....... and musical taste is personal- Funky Soul
For what its worth, I'm not anti-any particular "sub-genre" as such, but as already stated, whole sets of blandness be it whatever "style" doesn't float my particular boat, and whilst we're on the subject of funk(ish) stuff, I've been bored stiff by a few one hour sessions of utter dirge at a couple of venues I like to attend.....if it is indeed deemed to be "new breed/the way forward"....then it ain't for me I'm afraid! - News: Who are the Great Soul Deejays?
