Jonathan Capree - Gonna Build Me A Mountain - Ox Bow
Totally agree Quinvy. Just wondered if anyone has actually listened to the cheep and cheezy way those back up girls do their little chant. No emotion, precious little soul. Butlins material.

Greg Perry "Heart" when & where
This came over on 12" format in quantity, and was played by most jocks on both the club and the then modern soul scene alike. actually got mine from Top shop! in Norwich the same week it was imported. So a topic on who played records like this first is crazy and compleat guess work, given that so many people bought it at the same time. Mr Vincent also played some good indie soul during that period, which very few gave him credit for. Good shout Bobby.

Racism at NS venues; did/does it happen
I have never witnessed any racist behavior at any all- nighters, weekenders or soul nights. Most all-nighters I attended since the late seventies always had a few black or mixed race folks in attendance, but I well remember an all-dayer which I think was in the midlands during the early eighties when there was northern and modern in one room with another playing jazz/funk and current black club sounds in another. Sam decided to play Booker Newbury 'Love town' in his modern set, as it had only just got released. This was followed by a rush of black folks from the Jazz funk room to dance to it. I always remembered thinking, it was such a pity there was not more of this cross reference between the scenes. Contrary to one poster on this thread, I have witnessed a lot more black folks at the early jazz/funk weekends than he mentions .At the Caistor weekends back in the late seventies up to a third was normal. Really good people, With several becoming good friends, with one being godfather to my son. Just do not understand how people can stoke up racism on the back of a club culture they know precious little about, and get away with it !.

Discogs seller: too good to be true?
Yes, that was the copy Jason. And yes it's funny how many rare under the radar items somehow need to have a big ticket or reputation attached to them before a small fish like me can flog it ! . Which was why I touched on the sheep mentality. Anyway I left lime scale remover on the Snap prescot for a day, and it plays very much better now. You should have twigged that Jason, given that it looked like it had been under water for some time.

Discogs seller: too good to be true?
They may reside in Germany, but he could well be selling on behalf of a collector. He did sell some twelves for me a few years ago, as he seemed to get better money than anyone else. Many collectors have items that they would rather not tell the world they own. Many years ago that Ellipsis 45 was in my sales box at Yarmouth for £400, And i ended up bringing it home , but that was before the sheep had got wind of things. Quality rare soul records have been living in collections all over the world for many years ,even more so since the internet got going.

Worst Cover Up Attribution?
I agree with you all the way, in fact during the early to mid eighties there were numerous talented artists with current record deals who were having their records played by very well known dj's as somebody else, not only did this hamper those very important early sales that creates the buzz within the industry, but as you say Mike it really is disrespectful, as some of the artists names used to cover the record were in fact inferior singers to the real ones. Given that this was also happening on radio with concrete evidence, I believe those dj's were rather fortunate not to have one serious law suite shoved in their face. Then of cause there is the other side of the coin like at stafford when 60's records were played by artists who were vocally inept, only to be introduced as somebody who could actually sing

A great 45, and well worth the mention in the thread.

Parcel Arrived But No Record In It, Is This A Scam
Keep at it Mark, it really is a terrible process. But like I explained, it did work for me. Really do hope you get some where with this. I do believe I was lucky though, because at the end of the day unless we are forced to open the parcel in front of the postman anyone could say there was nothing inside, when in fact there was, and we could also get our money back. So maybe ebay have stopped any claim like this that favors with the buyer, but they did with me. Andy

Parcel Arrived But No Record In It, Is This A Scam
The very same thing happened to me about four years ago. Got the parcel when working at home, so I left it on the side ready to open after I had eaten my lunch. As I picked it up it did feel a bit light. Anyway it looked poorly packaged, and yes there was f*** all inside. This came off ebay and was one of the harder lamp 45's that was not likely to come round again in a hurry. So I notified the seller in a pleasant way, only to be told I was a thief! .however I kept my cool and asked the seller if he would accept a 50% refund as I did feel slightly sorry for him and he had exellent feedback.Anyway the abuse continued with him not prepared to accept any responsibility. So I opened a case with ebay which as many will know has to be clear and concise to realistically get anywhere, which included ebay making me file a case at my local police station before they would act. This was difficult because they would not accept the offence actually was commited on their patch, but they filed it in the end, and I could not believe it when ebay found in my favor and I received a full refund. I will never know for sure, but I believe due to the poor packaging and minimal crap sellotape somebody along the way got it open and had it away. I kept the package to check the weight on the form, but you could not read it properly. But Soulhawk is correct, this just about as conclusive as you can be. Never did get the 45.

Finding Rare/unknown 45S
I believe it was Brian Clough who said ' you can eat what you like, but it won't make you pass the ball straight'. In this case it's ' Just because you can't find anybody who owns or knows it ain't gonna make it sound any better!' That very word ' Unknown' brandished around this scene peels the skin off my back. Unknown to who? the problem comes when the same dozen suspects ask each other , then their conclusion is classed as final. There was a 45 that finished today on ebay by Joe walker on sing song that did $1200 odd. The seller said it was unknown. Just wondered what it would have fetched had he not said that. I had this off a guy in the north carolina many years ago. And its only an okay moody piece .In fact several titles like that African Descendants thing I had in a box, and I am sure others did as well. there are exceptions as we all know, but someone somewhere usually has it already, and more to the point accepts it for what it sounds like. Most of the stuff classed as unknowns were pulled out of boxes way back, played ,then put back with the punter whispering' it's good, but it's not carling'.

Top Shelf - Any Info Please?
Hi John To be fair it would seem unlikely, however in soul harmony singles it has a Epic listing, but this also has a question mark to go with it, which is why I thought I would ask around. As you know most of the majors did very small runs of of some really unlikely titles which in time have become very hard to track down compared to the original indie release. I think there was a thread on here relating to a We the Peaple 45 on Polydor, so it's a bit like that I suppose. Andy

Is Jack Montgomery The Most Auctioned Record?
Belita Woods 'Magic corner was another one , used to be on ebay every week, usually trashed from the same old stocks with no sleeves. and yet people still keep shelling out for them. Maybe some folks only look on an occasional basis or just don't get it!.

Senator Jones Story. Shagg & Hep'me Records Owner
Thanks for that Dave, I was not aware he was in those groups. I have that Malaco side , i have also grown to like the slower side 'I can see' however ,unfortunatly that side is not in such good a shape . Andy

Senator Jones Story. Shagg & Hep'me Records Owner
I only had the soulville copy, and could not find it to check the credits. But you are correct. Looks like those flappy things either side of my head took over. I have a ballad by Hank Sample on jb's so I should have noticed the loose connection. Andy

Senator Jones Story. Shagg & Hep'me Records Owner
Dave Do you think the two releases of the Donald lee Richardson are rather strange?. Don't know about you, but that release does not sound like a New Orleans record to me. It does seem to fit much better with the other stuff that Bobby Fulton put out, as apposed to the other Senator Jones things. Are you sure it is the first release? and not something Mr Jones somehow decided to licence while on his travels. New Orleans to Harrisburg PA, very strange , or am I missing something. Great piece of music none the less. Andy
