Robin Thicke V Marvin Gaye: Jack Ashford Has His Say
Given that we have had sixty years worth of soul music, I would have thought it was almost impossible to come up with a genuine original groove that sounds nothing at all like anything that had been marketed before, Well certainly that is acceptable to the human air. The variations within musical instruments and song phrasing may be vast but sooner rather than later there is a saturation point. And that my friends is were we are now.

Deep City Records
Reading the last sentence seems to give the impression that Betty wright did not actually record for deep city, but she most certainly did with Good lovin/ Paralyzed. Nice post Andy.

Never Saw This Before?
Just noticed this is credited to William powell. The backing track sounds rather like 'heartache souvenirs'.

Imagine If It Hadn't Made The Charts
I like to look back at some of the better black music that charted, not just to say 'Yes that deserved it' or 'never want to hear that again', but to remember just how many thousands of artists had a go and never made a dollar. In the case of this artist it was not before time. Bo kirkland or better known to many soul fans as Micheal James kirkland recorded the wonderfull 'There's nothing i can do about it' for highland records as Mike & the censations along with several other exellent tracks, not only on this logo but later on revue. His solo work for Zay and Bryan als deserves praise. His cut 'You put it on my mind' from the 'Doin' it right album is superb. A very underated singer imo, with such a well rounded voice. So I hope it bagged him a few dollars after many years hard work. As for some of the out and out pop acts mentioned in this thread , I could not care less. Andy

Bobby Patterson I Get My Groove From You
The first copy of the Bobby patterson I had played incredibly poor and it looked mint, and I also seem to remember somebody else saying the same thing, perhaps a dodgy box that turned up, hopefully of which most have probably been trashed. Just thought I would mention it if some are looking to buy one. A lovely record though, and well worth a mention. Personally I prefer the Bobby patterson, but would not part with the 'Shannon' cut as the flip is half tidy. Andy

It's not all doom and gloom we may well get to hear John edwards version of 'Tin man'!.

Wizard Of Oz, Northern Style
I very much look forward to 'Tin man' trying to do the splits without chopping his knackers off with those sharp edges!.

News: Soulbowl
I found out about soul bowl while i was still at school, either through blues and soul or black echoes. I then preceded to read the lists in physics lessons. I really had no clue what i was looking at. just the odd artist that looked familiar. The first title i got was £1.50 and my mum had to show me how to do the postal order, probably around 78/79 . My first expensive record was Gene woodbury £20, I was so exited I told John I would come and pick it up at portland street. I travelled on the bus from nowich, i't took forever going round all these little villages, but i could not drive so had little other option. Got my record then John took me back to the bus station. Traveled back on the bus thinking, iv'e just met the king!. Top bloke who has forgot more than most know. Andy

Thanks for the scan Chalky. Sorry it obviously did sell!

I am sure there was a Tymes acetate on ebay of the 'A touch of baby' track which came on mgm that Billy jackson co-produced. This was a bell acetate and was from one year previous. So as someone eluded to previously the acetate company may have been one Mr Jackson liked to use for promotional use etc. The item did not sell by the way. Andy

I suppose I am not 100% sure, but it must be some risk to pay to bootleg a 45 then scuff it up like it is in the pictures then hope it does not jump!.By the time you have pissed about like that, you might as well do a wand label look alike , and sell a shed load of them. I had a couple of bell sound acetates some time ago, but cannot remember if they had bell sound stamps. Does this?. Still don't see why it should not be real. there seems to be more sceptics about this one than the jamaican copy that turned up. Don't know why, as that must have been just as easy to boot with that faded mono text. But no Steve, I did not see that Empires disc, not sure what i would think then? . Besides imo Billy jackson did a whole load of stuff that followed a similar musical pathway in that big city beat ballad mold, and so did many others 'Not now but later' is good, but not a patch on records like Hoagy lands 'reminisce' spectrum or Billy butler 'love grows bitter brunswick. Far more intensity and better lyrics, at a 50th of the price. Personally think the other side is poor. So in reality I just hope somebody has not been ripped off. Andy

Come on Pete, you know full well and so do the rest of us that most acetates have little or no info on them, and most of the acetates i've seen and own have stuck on labels as apposed to smooth molded paper then print. I,m still happy for that man. Andy

Most of the dodgy looking items I have seen are often mint with no crossing out of text etc. Dodgy people do not usually rub a piece of sandpaper over it , then scribble on it so they get less money for it. All though I have seen the spent teabag trick on the label, and pretend it came out of some waterlogged basement ! Looks like a genuine item to me. I'm happy for that man.

Detroit 67 .... The Year That Changed Soul
Ian A very nice overview of stuart Cosgrove, which no doubt will go a long way to help sell a book ,which really does look a good read.

Ronnie Dyson 'i Want To Be Where You Are' Columbia
Thanks for digging it out John. The Dead wax on mine is all the same except on the 'I just want to be there side' (which plays I wanna be where you are' has a 1 as apposed to a 2. So after both matrix it is 1c. So I guess it is checking or asking on every issue copy that comes along. Best of luck folks and thanks for the info John. My thinking is they did a small run then realized the cock up!
-
Ronnie Dyson 'i Want To Be Where You Are' Columbia
This could well be the case. However this would then mean it is a miss- print as apposed to a miss-press. Does this also mean 'I just want to be there' (the title printed on the record) never came out on 45!. I still think there was a small batch miss-pressed? We will get to the bottom of this in the end. Many thanks for the input. Andy

Billy Byrd 'lost In A Crowd'/ Silly Kind Of Love Scream
Sounds about right Chris. Don't think you will ever hear Larome baker and Chuck cockerham played at the same venue again ! The capacity crowd was usually about six. But then it was norwich.

Billy Byrd 'lost In A Crowd'/ Silly Kind Of Love Scream
The 45 is vg+ many would grade better. Has a few light marks but none are audible , probably due to those atlanta horns!

What would be a fair price to ask for this one at present? Andy

Ronnie Dyson 'i Want To Be Where You Are' Columbia
Sorry, but not up to speed with that. I assume it reads the same as the normal issue. It also has stamped at the top Horace a toussaint. who i assume is either a radio station dj or distributor, but i doubt this has any bearing on this miss-press. Sorry i am not able to be of more help. Andy

Ronnie Dyson 'i Want To Be Where You Are' Columbia
Hi all As many will know this track has been issued on 45 by expansion, with many claiming no previous 45 release, and only available from the 'Love in all flavors' lp. However i have on columbia 45 'Don't be afraid with the flip printed as 'I just want to be there'. However it plays 'Don't be afraid' with ' I Want to be where you are' on the flip. Is this a well know miss - press ? or am i just a jammy b******. Don't get me wrong, the official b side is imo a fantastic soul record anyway, but it does seem strange for a logo like columbia to get it that wrong. What do you reckon? Andy

Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
It is soulfull black american music that utilizes modern day and current up to date production techniques.99.9% of the records mentioned so far are just 70's & 80's oldies. They ceased to be modern soul thirty years ago . The problem now is many hang on to old well respected artists doing new stuff which is often very poor, or new artists doing old stuff. Very sad imo. However if that way inclined try Lew Kirtons take on 'Open the door to your heart' cd cut. I like Elements of life 'Live your life for today' .as being a good example of modern soul, infact try the whole cd. Andy
