The Holidays: Getting Kind Of Soulful - New Soul Junction Release

The Holidays: Getting Kind Of Soulful. SJCD5012
Release Date: Monday May 1st 2017

There were several groups within the Detroit music scene of the 1960’s that shared the name of ‘The Holidays’. But this cd compilation is dedicated to the one whose main protagonists were the brothers Jack and James Holland. Both sides of their Soul Hawk 45 apart, it is their own productions for the Marathon, Ron-Hol and Rob-Ron labels both issued and previously unissued that has been included in this compilation.

Beginning with their 1969 ‘Popcorn’ Wylie’s produced, solitary Soul Hawk 45 release “Maybe So, Maybe No” issued under the group name of ‘The New Holidays’. The currently in demand  A-side “Maybe So, Maybe No”  featured Jack and Jimmy Holland, Maurice Wise and former Motown group ‘The Contours’ ex member Joe Billingslea.  The flipside of the Soul Hawk release “If I Only Knew” is an excellent cover version of a previous Jimmy (Soul) Clark recording “If I Only Knew Then (What I Know Now)” which  was recorded at a later session to “Maybe So, Maybe No”  using a slightly different line up with Joe Billingslea making way for a youthful Elliot Smith.

“Maybe So, Maybe No” made sufficient noise in and around Detroit for it to be picked up for national distribution by Armen Boladian’s, Westbound label. But the flipside of this release “My Baby Ain’t No Plaything” although credited as The New Holidays is definitely not them singing.
During their time at Soul Hawk records The New Holidays made several rehearsal recordings of songs that Popcorn’s partner wordsmith Tony Hester (ironically a former member of the Golden World group The Holiday’s who recorded “I’ll Love You Forever”) had composed. Songs such as “In The Rain” and “The Devil Is Dope” amongst others, which although considered for potential release on Soul Hawk, never came out following a falling out between Popcorn and Hester. Later becoming hit songs for another Detroit ensemble, The Dramatics. Incidentally blue eyed singer and native Detroiter Mayer Hawthorne recorded a cover version of “Maybe So, Maybe No” during 2009.
By 1972 The Holidays although still performing in clubs were without a record company behind them, so they made the decision to go it alone and formed their own production company, releasing their first recording during the same year on their newly formed Marathon label. This initial release was an excellent double sider “I’m So Glad (That I Met You)” (Marathon 257). A wonderfully upbeat and joyous song of  a new found love  co-written by  James Holland and Sylvester Potts a former member of the Motown group ‘The Contours’.  While the flipside “Too Many Times” again a Sylvester Potts and Jimmy Holland composition is  totally the opposite being a song concentrating on a relationship of lies and deceit. Both the issued 45 version and the longer unissued master tape version of “Too Many Times” are featured. The group line-up on this releases included Jack and Jimmy Holland along with Maurice Wise and was recorded under the artist name of ‘The Fabulous Holidays.
For their next release ‘The Holidays’ decided to enlist the help of a neighbour of their former employer ‘Popcorn’ Wylie, one Mr Tyrone Fairchild whom the Holidays thought through his many contacts would open doors for them.
Under Fairchild’s management The Holidays released two 45 singles during 1973. Firstly the soulful ballad “Getting Kind Of Serious” (Marathon 18475) a Fritz Hale and Fredrick Charles Hawkins composition backed with an instrumental version of the same song. Followed by “Ego Tripping” (Marathon 18475) an upbeat funky little mover written by Fritz Hale and Anthony Hawkins (Charles Hawkins older brother) backed with the ballad “Lazy Day” written by James Holland, Anthony Hawkins and Fritz Hale, released on both a Red and Silver label design. “Ego Tripping” (and the previously mentioned “Getting Kind Of Serious” all share the same release catalogue number of 18475, which was reputedly Tyrone Fairchild’s house number on Sorrento Street. “Ego Tripping” again featured Jack, James and Maurice, but with Maurice stepping down to be replaced by Charles Hawkins on “Lazy Day” and “Getting Kind Of Serious”. Again the featured mix of “Getting Kind Of Serious” is a longer unissued version taken from the master tapes.

During 1975 The Holidays resumed their acquaintance with former record store owner Ronald Holmes.  Holmes promised to help The Holidays secure a recording deal with a major label although some interest was reputedly shown by a New York based major nothing actually ever materialised.

So through this renewed collaboration The Holidays released “This Is Love b/w The Love We Share” on the Rob-Ron (RR-75) label. Two excellent mid tempo sides, firstly the A-side “This Is Love (A Little Understanding)” to give it its full title. With Maurice Wise performing the lead vocal duties on this side only. While the flipside “The Love We Share” saw Jack, James and Charles Hawkins all alternate in the role of lead singer alongside a fourth featured vocalist William Thomas Ray (The uncle of Charles Hawkins). The “Love We Share” was recorded twice. Firstly as the issued 45 version under the shortened title of “The Love We Share” and as an unissued longer version under the title of “(Been Together Too Long) The Love We Share” but with slightly different lyrics, both versions have been included on this compilation. During 1976 a further Holland/Holmes collaboration saw the release of the message song “Procrastinate (Why Do We)” (Ron-Hol 76) recorded as both vocal and instrumental versions, with the Holland brothers cousin, James ‘Jay’ Reid joining them for this release only, Maurice Wise by then having quit the group. After this release Ronald Holmes and the Holidays parted company.

During late 1976 into 1977 Jack and James Holland wrote and produced two further songs which they recorded with Charles Hawkins. The up tempo dance track “You Make Me Weak” and the less frenetic “Lost Love” although never issued at the time both songs gain their initial release on this compilation. In March of 1978 James who after studying accountancy at college took a job with the State Of Michigan Auditing Insurance Companies, he later moved and worked in the Virgin Isles for awhile. Meanwhile brother Jack embarked on a college Dental Technology course, were he learned how to make dental plates. He was so good at it that he was even offered a job as a teacher there, but declined the offer, becoming a full time band promoter and club master of ceremonies instead.

The Holidays did have one last roll of the dice in the record industry when in 1980 when they re-released a 45 featuring two of their previous recordings “Getting Kind Of Serious” backed with “(Why Do We) Procrastinate” ( vocal version), under the artist name of just ‘Holiday’.

Throughout the production and recording of the Holidays 1970’s output there has always been both a strong friendship and working relationship between the Holland and Hawkins families. Brothers Anthony (Wolf) and Charles Hawkins alongside bassist VC Lamont Veasey and drummer Tyrone Hite  along with two guest singers had begun their own recording careers during the mid 60’s under the group name of The Fabulous Impacts with the release of  “My Baby/I’ll Be Crying” on the bomb label.. Although they are better known as the founding members of the 1970’s Detroit Psychedelic Rock and later Funk band ‘Black Merda’ ( Merda being an African-American slang spelling of the word Murder).  All these guys had previously learnt their trade as session musicians at the Fortune and Golden World Studio’s. During the late 60’s and early 1970’s they also worked as Edwin Starr’s tour band ‘The Soul Agents’. While Anthony Hawkins and V.C. Veasey also cut their teeth as songwriters on Robert Ward’s 1967 Groovesville recording “I Will Fear No Evil”. Between circa 1974-1977 the Holland and Hawkins brothers operated their own production company ‘HHH Productions’ releasing two 45 singles on their Amtonac label. Their first release was cut on the Hawkins brothers elder sister Linnie Walker “People Let Me Know/Darn Well” (Amtonac 001) while their other release was recorded on a blue eyed group of musicians called Bland Allison (taking their name from Bland Allison Act of 1878) The title of the recording was “Can’t Get Back To You Again” (Part1 & 2) (Amtonac 18476).
Following Jack Holland’s sudden death due to a brain aneurysm on the 21ST of January 1985 (his 40th birthday), James Holland was so sadden by this loss of his younger brother that he quit the music business for good only returning recently to collaborate on this project.

Chairmen Of The Board - All I Need Is You Tonight

The Chairmen Of The Board, one off Soul Music's all time great recording acts return to the studio to record "All I Need Is You Tonight".  Written and produced by Mervin & Melvin Steals (of the Four Perfections) and arranged by the legendary Detroit McKinley Jackson, the track is available to download under the three's own label MoPhilly at iTunes and other outlets.

With one of Soul Music's all-time great group names, the Chairmen of the Board has pleased music lovers for over 30 years. Formed in Detroit , the Chairmen were one of the first acts signed by songwriting legends Holland/Dozier/Holland for their Invictus label following H/D/H's messy divorce from Motown. The group came out of the box strong in 1970 with the wonderful "Give Me Just A Little More Time," a classic early 70's radio smash highlighted by lead singer General Johnson's emotive, plaintive vocals. "Give Me" was the foundation of the group's excellent debut album, which also featured the infectious "(You've Got Me) Dangling on a String,".
Over the years, the Chairmen of the Board General Johnson, Danny Woods and Ken Knox were among Soul Music's most consistent hitmakers, scoring big with "Pay to the Piper," "Finders Keepers," "Chairman of the Board," and the blissful "Everything's Tuesday."." Carolina Girls " On the Beach".
The Chairmen continued to record with moderate success, scoring a surprise hit in Europe in the early 2000's with the joyous "Bless Your Heart," a great tune and performance that sounds like it was plucked from their early 70s catalog.
Group leader General Johnson died on October 13, 2010 at age 67.  At the request  of General Johnson to keep the group's legacy strong , 40 year member Ken Knox continues to lead the group touring with new members Thomas Hunter and Brandon Stevens and a 6 piece backing band known as The Executives.
Two years later, Swiffer Jet used the group's timeless hit "Give me just a Little More Time" in a  popular commercial for the company.  The Group also released their first single post General Johnson" YOU" to an enthusiastic Fan Base stateside and across the pond.
In 2015,  the group scored a # 5 record on the UK Soul Charts with " Reach Out 2 Me" written by Thomas Hunter, Ken Knox with Production from famed UK Producer Nigel Lowis.
The past few years, The NFL Carolina Panthers have featured the group in video singing the teams theme song and a Half Time Performance.  The Carolina Panthers continues to play their music during home games.
Chairmen of the Board are members of the North and South Carolina Music Hall of Famè.

Curtis Mayfield was one of the seminal vocalists and most talented guitarists of his era, and his music played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement: ""People Get Ready"" is the black anthem of the time. In Traveling Soul , Todd Mayfield tells his famously private father's story in riveting detail. Born into dire poverty, raised in the slums of Chicago, Curtis became a musical prodigy, not only singing like a dream but growing into a brilliant songwriter. In the 1960s he opened his own label and production company and worked with many other top artists, including the Staple Singers and a young Chaka Khan. Curtis's life was famously cut short by an accident that left him paralyzed, but in his declining health he received the long-awaited recognition of the music industry. Passionate, illuminating, vivid, and absorbing, Traveling Soul will doubtlessly take its place among the classics of music biography.

R.I.P Steve Aldo

Saddened to hear of the passing of Edward Bedford (AKA Steve Aldo).
The '60s singer from Liverpool was Merseybeat's own black R&B/soul guy and had a cracking voice.

By Simsy in News Archives ·

House of Broken Hearts by E. Mark Windle

Regarding what has been pretty much an obsession with 1960s southern soul themes since I started writing some years ago, the latest project was undertaken in an attempt to resolve one nagging omission. A fair chunk of my travels (virtual and otherwise) has been spent researching the Carolinas, Virginia, Louisiana and a wee bit of Texas, to cover beach music, soul influenced garage bands and black vocal groups for It’s Better To Cry and then Rhythm Message. But I was always conscious that one particular southern state was well overdue attention.
Among the most obvious musical centres in Tennessee would be Memphis and Nashville. These cities may be separated by a couple of hundred miles - no distance at all in US terms of course – but both have rich and intriguing musical identities; to the casual observer, for culturally contrasting reasons.
Memphis’ musical heritage is undeniable, and there is no danger of it being eroded by the passage of time. Indeed it is comforting that there is an abundance of literature celebrating all aspects of the Memphis musical tapestry whether it be Beale Street, Sun Records, Stax, Graceland and rock ‘n’ roll, blues or jazz. As a writer looking for an R&B 'angle', I guessed that Stuart Cosgrove would maybe have it covered as his next plan after Detroit ’67 (no doubt adding a political slant to previous reference works by Peter Guralnik and the like).
So then, what of Nashville? Well, much of its soul music history has until recent years been obscured by the city’s accolade as the country music centre of the universe. The Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum proudly stand testament to that. But to say that “Music City” is synonymous with country music is (technically) a contradiction. After all, the term was coined when the Fisk Jubilee Singers came to UK shores to perform their spirituals in the presence of Queen Victoria as part of their university fund raising effort. This would set the scene for future decades of race music, which would only be quashed by eventual dispersion of the local African-American community. Activities to redress the balance from the 1980s onwards include Nashville musician Fred James’ efforts to roll-call blues and soul singers to perform again and in some cases even to recommence recording careers; and a highly praised Night Train exhibition by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, coordinated by museum editor Michael Gray. The CD spin-off from the exhibition was even a Grammy winner. And to this day, the artists from back in the day continue to sing, reminisce and be remembered by others who come to watch them perform regularly in a café off Murfreesboro Pike.
But what does 1960s Nashville have to offer specifically to soul fans from the UK and European underground scenes? Some are no doubt aware of the huge catalogue of Sound Stage 7 and related releases. Enthusiasts of a different genre have long loved the Louisiana swamp blues which found their way onto Ernie Young’s Excello. But to some younger generations or to those on the other side of the pond, Nashville soul music output sometimes appeared a little disconnected from the rest of what was going on in the music industry at the time. Was the R&B ‘thing’ in Nashville was just a bit of luck with record industry leaders finding a brief niche with the national soul explosion?
Truth is, it was there all the time. Everything just came together at the right time for soul music. As the back cover blurb of House of Broken Hearts explains:
“….In the 1960s an exciting, vibrant black music scene thrived on Jefferson Street and in surrounding neighbourhoods. Night clubs, bars and theatres provided a focal point for the development of R&B. Ingredients for success were all in place – home grown talent, venues, charismatic DJs and promoters, entrepreneurial record store owners, independent black owned labels, a radio station making hip soul music accessible to teenagers across the southern states, and TV shows which featured local R&B acts. It was even the time for white artists and musicians to experiment with black music; a crossroads where soul met country music. For a brief period at least, the future seemed bright….”
The purpose of this new book is to celebrate the individuals – not just the singers, but industry players, media drivers and record labels; bringing the spotlight once more back to this era. OK, so it’s written from a northern / rare soul enthusiast’s perspective; you’ll find the stories there of Jimmy Church, Frank Howard and the Commanders, Freddie North, Johnny Jones and the King Casuals, Joe Simon, Jackie Beavers, The Spidells and many more. But I hope you will discover more than a mere collection of biographies. It is story of dreams, exciting times, and harsh reality. Were it not for ill-planned urbanisation decisions as mentioned earlier which displaced the black community - and inevitably much of its musical culture – perhaps Nashville could have forged an R&B legacy comparable to cities of the north.
Music City is long overdue recognition for its role in popularising soul as a genre. The book cements part of this history with some thorough research and a whole lot of help from those veterans who still keep the flame alive. If you’re passing through Nashville, be sure to call by Carol Anne’s Cafe.

The Night Owl Take Over of Birmingham Town Hall

Town Hall is one of the city’s most renowned and prestigious music venues, and has joined forces with a relative newcomer to the soul scene which has already made its mark and been voted Best New Venue by the Birmingham Mail readers last year, The Night Owl. The two venues are working together to bring The Big Birmingham Soul Night this April.
The Night Owl is a small intimate club and after listening to feedback from some Northern Soul fans that it was not big enough for a big soul night has taken the advice and found a building and big wooden dance floor worthy of the occasion!
The event, which harks back to soul nights of the 60's and 70's, will be programmed by The Night Owl and held at Birmingham Town Hall. This beautiful listed building boasts a giant wooden floor, perfect for Northern Soul style dancing, with an elegant balcony for those who would prefer to just relax and enjoy the dancing below. There will also be a smaller second room of music, with its own bar and seating, record buying and selling and more.
Confirmed to head up this evening is legendary DJ Colin Curtis, who began DJing in the late 1960s at the Crystal Lake Ballroom and the infamous Golden Torch in Stoke and later Blackpool Mecca. He is often cited as being one of the most important tastemakers of black music in the UK. Colin will be playing music from his Torch days, so you can expect the Northern Soul classics that Colin broke and much more, all on original vinyl.
Also playing in the main room (original vinyl only) is veteran DJ PEP (Wigan Casino), young soul fans Josh Pye (The Soul Hole) and Sonny & Spare (The Boogaloo), Kev Richie (The Scooter Do) and Richard Priest (The Night Owl).
The second room will feature resident DJ's from The Night Owl playing 60's and 70's soul, funk, mod, ska and more.
To celebrate the first soul night of this scale in years, there will be a Northern Soul flash mob on Saturday 18th March at Grand Central Station, to join the fun email mazzy@nightowlbirmingham.com

Northern Soul and Age in 2017 - Carry On Regardless?

Spring 2017 Points Of View
A new month under way, just seeing the back of winter off, there's a spring both in the air and in the step, so let's have a go at this...
Spring 2017 Points Of View -  a new series set up to get some discussion going on concerning some interesting/relevant 2017 soul related topics.
Start things off...
Northern soul and age in 2017... carry on regardless ?
Well it could be argued that if you ever need an example of an 'elephant in the room" topic then this one could be it
Here we are in the year 2017 and time is marching on everywhere you look. Soul wise in the uk we have live artists performing in their 80s, some djs not that far off, collectors with money to spare (funded by pensions etc) fueling the never ending chase for rare records, events being tweaked to reflect increasing ages, seaside soul shows taking over the WW2 sing along slots and so on, all under the banner of 'northern soul'
Should this be a concern? Should we all carry on regardless? Should things be more defined?
I can see points for and against for some of the many aspects of any discussion, such as the 'old as you feel' view or the 'dead mans shoes' take for example
But more importantly what do you out there reckon on it all ?
Northern soul and age in 2017... Carry on regardless?
