I picked up a flyer recently which had several dj's on it...but the thing that got

me was all the dj's had (100club,CSC etc) by their names.

My question is...

Do dj's/promoters have the right to place these famous club names next to

theirs just cause they've dj'd once there? Or would you expect the DJ's to have been resident at said clubs?

In an ideal world Mikey you would only do it if they were residents at the said venue, but I think what it does do is gives the punter half an idea of what to expect tune wise in relation to where the dj's have played before.

its a selling tool at the end of the day. it helps promote and raise the profile of an event.

I disagree. I think its normally accepted that if someone puts a club name next to their own name it implies that they are a resident. Simply listing clubs they have DJed at gives me not any clue what they are going to be like, they could have been utterly cr#p (in my very subjective, bored to tears opinion) and booking them at said famous club might have been a big mistake. To be frank, some of the people doing this don't really seem to have the records I'd associate with the clubs in question.

At least Warren at Boogaloo usually gives us his set list several weeks in advance so it is possible to stay in the pub for a bit and then arrive when a tune you want to hear is going to be played.

In fact I havent seen a flyer for that.

It was a rhetorical question instigated by the pile of flyers with guest DJ's all having clubs next to their names. The clubs I chose were the 1st two that popped into my empty head.

I put the Bigger Events that i have played at in the last twelve months after my name on flyers, if that helps

its intended to show the punters what sort of standard to expect if they have never come accross you before

OK, here goes........When I was resident/ promoter at TOS, I always put THESE OLD SHOES after my name. However, over the years, I have deejayed at NCSC, 100 Club, Cleethorpes, Prestatyn etc etc and would not dream of hi-jacking and attaching any of those clubs after my moniker as I'm not resident - I WAS A GUEST DJ..........get it? GUEST...not my club. It's bogus to boost or enhance your deejay reputation by tagging one someone' club name onto yours and to add kudos to your name......the only people who can lay claim to adding the 100 Club after their names are the genuine residents, past or present:

Butch

Shifty

Roger Stewart (and honourary These Old Shoes Resident ;->)

Anyone else is in breach of the Trades Descriptions Act. That goes for anyone else using a club's name in vain. In some djs defence, promoters have made the flyers and added a club's name to bolster the roster...........which puts the guest in an embarrasing position :angry: Right, nuff said - Jo D.S.O, D.S.S, H2o, B.B.C, L.B.W............

As I said in a PM to Richard, and I may as well say publically to you Steve. It was not knocking your do in any way whatsoever. Ady, Matt, Gareth and Lisa are good friends of mine, and some of the nicest people I know on or off the scene. So it was not a dig at them at all. If anyone mistakenly thought it was then I apologise for that. And I apologise Steve if anyone has taken a negative view to your night due to this thread.

It's an interesting topic. Looking at the drawer full of flyers I have here its every single club that does it. But just cos everyone does it, and its the status quo, it doesnt mean that it cant be discussed.

I have to agree with Greg, should be residents at a club before anyone allowed to use it as a selling point for another promotion.

Then again if the DJ is good enough then the promoters wouldn't have to use advertising gimmicks to sell them to the paying punter

Thats the way it should be done. Playlists or top 5s etc are also a good way of letting the public know what to expect. Although fliers would then be pretty hefty I suppose.

My view on this is, a good DJ should have no need to put anything next to his name all he need do is have a good selection of choons to keep the dance floor busy. At the end of the day most clued up people on the scene already know who is who and what is what

I might be being a bit naieve, but I'd have thought most people would know who were residents at which clubs and who weren't. I can't really see what all the fuss is about anyway, because in some ways it gives exposure to the clubs at which the DJ's have played at as well!

Your point, echoed in some of the other posts, differ from Mikeys though. The DJs themselves don't hand write the flyers, the promoters print them. If a promoter asks a future DJ where they have played in the past and chooses to use that on the flyer it's their choice, it's their club.

On the other hand I do agree that you should really try to limit it to residencies (IF said DJ has a residency).

If the DJ doesn't have a residency anywhere, and most probably don't, then it's a handy reference tool for potential punters. And lets be honest, if someone has been booked at a club there must some reason for it, it's unlikely that they've been booked 'blind'. You can't reasonably reduce it to personal opinion unless it's your club. And if they were in any way widely thought of as "utterly cr#p" they wouldn't have a string of recognisable clubs to put next to their name anyway.

I've occasionally felt slightly peeved that someone's used the 100 Club name when not resident and occasionally I can't even remember them being guests, but generally I take it as a compliment. Most of the people who have been guests have been damned decent chaps with fine records and if they're saying that that's the style of music they will be playing i think it's fair enough.

DJs want to do it so bad there's no harm in glaming up their CV like people do for their day jobs. If it's someone who i use reasonably regularly and is part of the 100 Club furniture like say Tony Smith, then it's even less of a problem.

Most knowledgeable people know who's who and I don't think it will upset too many; but good point Mikey.

Depends on the night and the clubs music policy.

DJ'ed at the Hideaway on Saturday as well, but managed to put together a spot of semi-known 60s R&B some Hideaway 'Classics'

On Saturday afternoon, I knew the crowd would probably appreciate a set of Crossover and Modern, and gave me the chance to blow the dust out of the grooves.

I'm a resident at 'Steam' , where I try and play a set of Semi-known 60s, R&B and Current niter sounds.

As for advertising DJ line-ups with Clubs listed after DJ's, I don't really see the point... if the promoter has done their job right they will have booked the right DJ to fit the clubs music policy.

Reasons for bookings can be quite mysterious, sometimes people seem to get booked because they ask or their mates recommend them or boost their reputations. The decision to book them isn't always going to be done purely on knowledge of the DJ or his or her merit.

all you have to do is say no ... OR as i do ask people for a tape/cd of their stuff ... even a sample playlist and if i doesn't fit or isn't good then fine ..

however if it does and you didn't rate them before you have a bonus.

i have a bit on the clubs website that if ANYONE wants a spot send a tape and that goes for anyone we haven't personally seen doing our kinda thing

If you are a promoter you should really hear the DJ in action you want to book first. They might have a reputation, might have rarity after rarity but could be totally useless putting them together for a set. They could also be one of the best in the country but be totally alien to your regular punters and therefore not much use to your club

Difficult one this for me I don't like to ask for spots particularly having been asked by DJ's who I know do not play original vinyl and feeling uncomfortable about it. So I usually leave all that nonsence to Roly .

Though I did ask John May, Rich and Jamie to do our alldayer on the strength of what I heard them play at Soul or Nothing.

We have used venue occasionally on our flyers after DJs names but only after asking said DJ if thats OK so they make the judgement call not us in that case. It is often hard to think of superlatives for each DJ so this prevents the need to.

If asked I would have 'The Neighbourhood' after my name as co-promoter it gives the name some more exposure but I am resident at a monthly event in Lytham so that should be more apt but it isn't as many more people know the Neighbourhood than Lytham Academy.

All in all it's a bit of a minefield really so 'Ged Parker - Blackpool' does for me and I would hope that the venue I am being asked to play at attracts the audiences that like what I like to play.

Perhaps another thread altogether is would you refuse to play at a venue, if asked, because of its music policy or its stance on the originals debate or would you turn up but not compromise your position?

That's probably because the DJs don't write the flyers.

I've seen '100 Club' underneath my name on several occasions, and yes I've DJ'ed there on a fairly regular basis over the last ten years (well at least once a year over that sort of period), but as a guest, not a resident. Peronally I'm proud to have DJ'ed there and to be associated with the club in that way. Like Jo, I could put a huge list of events after my name, with very few exceptions I've been fortunate enough to get spots at almost every major niter or weekender over the last few years, so to be honest, if people haven't heard my name by now, they haven't been going out much

But as I'm not a promoter, I have very little control over what is written on flyers, and it's not something I ever did when I did promote events. So really, it's not something DJs, who are not promoters, have any involvement in.

Down south, many years ago, someone did a flyer and put "Wigan Casino" next to my name, I said I'd never dj'd there but he said "no, you're the only person we know who went there"

All in all it's a bit of a minefield really so 'Ged Parker - Blackpool' does for me and I would hope that the venue I am being asked to play at attracts the audiences that like what I like to play.
