What's your current or all fave? (MP3's welcome and appreciated)

Currently for me it's Eddie Holman's I'm not gonna give up

Incidentally, I've never really been sure how to define deep soul. I know these genres are fluid and it's all a matter of taste, but any thoughts?

For example, would some of the Dells ballads do it for you? Always Together, for me, is a sublime piece of work with a gut wrenching vocal; deep enough to be labeled deep?

Timmy Shaw Thunder In My Heart on Bon (b side is passable dancer as well). Think it was a Johnnie Mae Matthews produced number. Love the Eddie Holman. The other one I really love is Shes Already Married by Bill Bland, wonderful vocal. Sod it, plenty more I love too, they make me all misty eyed. Little Hooks I Don't Want To Leave on the b side of some funk record is awesome too.

Deep soul is all about the emotion in the vocal, far as I'm concerned, not a particular style at all.

Hello Colin , Eddie Holman is a brilliant ballad , I've got loads of faves , but currently I'm still enjoying "Rainbow Road " - Bill Brandon , The Hard Tymes " I ask a question " , Aretha " Sweet bitter love " and George Jackson " Mackin' on you " .These type of records really blow my mind , and yes so many of The Dells records fit that bag , such as the one you've mentioned , or " The love we had stays on my mind " , " Love is missing from our lives " [ with The Dramatics - there's another ace group !! ] , " I wish it was me you loved " , I could go on and on......... Bobby womack is another fave artist on deep sides like " I'm through trying to prove my love for you " .As Dave Godin once said , you need to be a good actor as well as a great singer to make the listener believe you're really going through the pain portrayed in the lyrics of the best deep sides .Best Wishes ,Eddie

Still remember how this knocked me out when I first heard it. Great record.

Many years ago Micky Hodge did me a tape full of deep soul and slash your wrist tunes to .. one sticks in my mine "Darling take me back i'm sorry" was the chorus line, used to lie in the bath with a bottle of wine after a nighter and drown to this but being useless I can't remember who it was and can't find the tape listing

Dont really know how you define deep soul but as for Colins first suggestion of Eddie Holman flip this over and listen to the superb I'll cry 1000 tears. As good as a double sided gut wrencher gets. I think I read somewhere once that Eddie sings this with such feeling it leaves you in a physical emotional state after listening to it!

But for me it has to be Roy Hamilton - Reach out for me , if there is a better soul record than this I have yet to hear it.
