Am I right in thinking this was not that massive in the 70s and became bigger in the 80s. I think his faster tracks were played more in the 70s. Ady

  • Pretty sure Searling played it at every Oldies Friday night I went to in 1980, although not sure what that tells you, and I stopped paying attention after the first couple of Oldies nights so maybe it

  • Pretty sure Oh my darlin' wasn't a wheel track, I only remember getting it just after The Wheel closed. Temptation Walk/Shotgun and the duck absolute massive tune 1970 at The Wheel and The Cats

  • The chaps who said Samanthas are dead right. Was certainly an 'evergreen' favourite in South Yorkshire area (Rotherham, Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster) right through the very early 70's - pre-Sammies

Temptation Walk/Shotgun and the duck absolute massive tune 1970 at The Wheel and The Cats one of the early big money tunes same with Richard Temple.

Baby do the Philly dog a bit played out by 69 mainly a club sound by then,Secret Agents /We go together still played a bit.The Flamingoes was massive until re -release, then that become more of a club sound.

The Action stuff like Little Carl Carlton,Dee Dee Sharp,Mine exclusively,I can take care of myself,Same old thing Our love will grow in particular all allniter tunes at The Wheel 68/69 onwards.

Doris Willingham is not worth more than £25.... is it....? Not easy to pick up.

No, nowhere near that on UK or US

I asked if it was a Wheel track, Bri, because I'm sure I got this when I was 14 which was 1969. Possibly assumed it was a Wheel track but straight from the horses mouth, as they say, is good enough for me.

Interesting. If that's correct (and I can't find it on any Wheel playlists) then I'm wondering if was ever big anywhere before the mid 70's in that case? I always assumed that it was already an oldie by the time I got on the scene 'cos everybody seemed to know it and most people had copies........

...I compared it earlier with Bunny Sigler which was another record that everyone seemed to know plus there were tons of copies and that broke huge despite being known and common at the time.

It should sounded like it should have been a massive oldie ay?

i remember it from the Casino and Whitchurch all - dayers where i was on the dj rota

No not a Junction spin-- as far as I can remember Keith (obviously stand to be corrected)....I'd hazard a guess it was post 73...into 74 and 75 when it became recognised as such at.. wigan ??

Part of the President set up owned by Ed Kassner.

The first releases, before they settled down into soul, are an amazing hotch-potch of styles; rocksteady, pop, psychedelia, novelty. Some very interesting and obscure non-soul singles there.

the first 20/25 releases are very varied indeed

That was my first Jay Boy 45 Ian.

It certainly was a strange one, gaining a US release but with no continuation of the US label.

Also came out in Germany with pic sleeve, but apart from the UK copy, those three releases are it, to my knowledge.

Can any conclusions be drawn from the fact that the Doris Willingham US release on Jay Boy was distributed by London Records in the US ?

Looks like it was signed for the world by Jay Boy and used to launch both the UK and US imprints.....

Weird how it came to Jay Boy although, as Pete said earlier they were already issuing stuff from Bronco, Mustang, Jerhart etc via President, so maybe it was a logical step to set up a seperate imprint for stuff that was licensed in.

Went to shit, from Jay Boy 2 soulwise for a while ay?

I'm not sure if you mean to say that there were no US Jay Boy releases after the Doris Willingham US release , because there definitely were ... such as the Hogs "Its All Coming To Me Now" which also got an interesting green coloured label Jay Boy release in Germany .... https://www.45cat.com/record/rrk12002
