What a blast from the past from the man who brought us One of the Best niters Ever , fond memories of Allanton miners thats well what memories i have. my brains been fried taken out put in batter and fried again ha ha i still go to soul nights not as regular as i would like . Cut my teeth in the eighties at Messrs Walls dos (being one of the Fife lot myself) and then of course at Allanton - surely some of the best series of nighters I ever experienced. But it never seems to generate much discussion on here or elsewhere for that matter, I'm guessing because the scene had around 500 hardcore punters then. I personally think it had its own atmosphere, a nighter where punters were prepared to travel to. It's difficult to define what was unique about Shotts, similar progressive playlist to most of the scene at that time. But it was just that, unique. Although the mob we knock around with are casino, Stafford, Oddfellows, Blackburn etc regulars but I think Shotts was the glue which has led to friendships that have endured decades. I have got the Video that was on sale there of the 3rd anniversary, 3rd/4th Nov 1990. Remember people like Guy Hennigan, Pete Lawson, Rob Marriot and even John Manship travelling up there. I would hear cheap records like Pretty Baby - The C.O.D's then something rare like The Combinations - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me, Mandrill - Too Late then Matt Brown Thank You Baby. First heard Bob and Fred up there as well. I suppose it was all down to a great selection of DJ's and the people who were on the allnighter circut at the time. Jim Ohara Posted October 10, 2012 Author Share Posted October 10, 2012 Hi solid soul the DJ policy was really to mix the best of the Scottish collectors and DJ's ( jock, Colin law, Alan walls, Keith Whitson, mark Linton etc.) with the ones from done south who deserved the break, I.e. kitchen, dean, guy, graham Ellis, rob marriot etc. etc. I did have some of the more obvious popular names early on like Brian Rae etc., and also had the elite like Butch, but the aim was not to have people just playing rare expensive records (which it seems to be now), the target was quality Therefore you would hear a £5 record next to a £500 record, and to me and the people that enjoyed the scene at that time, this was greatly accepted Allanton was certainly responsible for bringing great people with the right attitude together at the right time with the right music All the best Jim 1 Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...
