BIT of FUN....

...Back in the late 70s / early 80s, there were alot of sounds being broken. Nowadays many of the 'HOT' sounds are reactivated oldies. But what are the top 10 newies being played today and by whom???

Definition of Newie for this thread - Doesn't have to be an total unknown or cover-up, can also be a known or semi known record that has never really had its day.

So what are the top 10???

Baring in mind, that this thread tread just might double or even treble the value of some of the discs mentioned!!! (such is our strange and wonderful scene).

I'll start with these 3 ...

Eric Lomax C/U - Mike H and Butch

Margaret Little - Mike H (again!!), Sam and Mark Speakman (north wales mafia members)

Nomads C/U / The Love I Miss - Steve Thomas (also north wales mafia)

I spose I dont really count being in the US right now & I'm not DJing a massive amount, but for what its worth these are doing the biz in my bedroom & at the few gigs that I get over here:

Sheepherders - If Ever You Need Me - Sounds International

The Clovers - Try My Loving On You - Josie

The Lavells - Share Him - CTB

The Hytones - Bigger & Better - Abet (Known by everyone, but never really acheived the status that it deserves)

and on a more mid to down tempo note, a great ender........ NA Allen - Every Time It Rains - Ronn (Thanks Jas)

Russ

I really like this Sheepherders record...the bit with the break and the line 'let ya fingers do the walking' is cool as f*ck..... Is it blue-eyed?

Clovers is also superb....why dosen't this get much action then? Or does it?

Anyone got soundfiles for the Lavells & Sheepherders??

Just got a copy of the Clovers. Excellent tune

Will be getting a spin from me at Rugby on Saturday!

In about 1990 I gave a copy of The Lavells to a mate who wasn't really into soul because it isn't really soul. Are people playing this now?

Edited by garethx

Trevski: Manships RoftheR has a soundclip of the Sheepherders.

Hi Kev,

Just had a look at your site, v.impressed. See you have a base up the road from me - in Farnham. I'm fairly sure that I used to race off-road enduros with the guys in your building. Small world, eh?

Col.

Todays HOT sound for me is Pauline Shivers - Wont you Come Back Home. Secured TODAY for the pricely sum of £15. Heard the leg end that is Dave Abbott playing it out a couple of weeks ago. Anyone know much about it?

Col.

Eric Lomas cover up getting a bit over played now IMO, well it has for a while, 6 or 7 playing it on a regular basis.

Two tops tunes for me are Butch's Masqueraders and Sherri Taylor - It's Beautiful cover ups. The Rita and Tiaras cover up for both Andy Dyson and Butch and Andy's Johnny Sayles cover up....just a few for that will take some beating on the nighter scene  .

Bit of an oldie I would have thought, I spun it the odd time few years ago, but sure this had spins some years ago, another by her on the same label, You Better Tell Him No is also worth picking up.

The Rita and Tiaras cover up for both Andy Dyson and Butch

Heard Andy introduce this as the Shalimars a few times. Is it just Andy's alternate C/U name, or has he let it slip......

don't worry Trev, Andy's let nothing slip......just an alternate cover up name

Used to put the Pauline Shivers on tapes some years back, nice tune.

Which one, Tell Him No? Very nice.

I was gonna ask for soundfiles of some of those mentioned, but since they're mostly covered up...

Sheepherders were predominantly white & had a pretty transient line up, but on this particular disc, the lead is a black guy named Bubba Bailey & he belts it out, massive, massive, massive.hard tune too, paid $$$ for mine even in the US.

This is one of those records that sounds crap when played at home, but blasted out in a club, FANTASTIC. I had 2 copies in my sales box for yonks and never had a sniff. Then somebody played it at Bury town hall, and I sold them both instantly. Two guys who had looked through my box many times. mmmmmmm.

Mr Abott & myself have discussed this record quite a few times over the past couple of years & we both love it as a NS record, think Dave has been playing it back home so hopefully people are getting behind it.......the woo-hoos are very reminiscent of the Velvets & these make the record for me, a dancers delight & get those hands in the air for the woo-hoo's toooooooooooo.

I may have got this totally wrong, but is the Rita/Shalimars c/u the other side of the Belita Woods c/u 'Foolish Girl' ? Which IMO is fabulous.

I can see this thread going a bit 'elitist'

Can't wait to hear from Mr Dull from Dullville, with his top 10 cover-ups that he doesn't play out.
