Soul Sam is the man............................we all have our regrets about what we may have played in the past, but Sam has always been good for the scene in at least he pushes new sounds constantly & has the enthusiasm & passion for the scene/music that most should be thankful for. As you know Tony most of the DJ's were playing at least some dodgy pop including Dicky Searling. I appreciate that this is not meant as a knock to Sam.................................but should put the thread into context........................he's played hundreds if not thousands of fantastic soul records & his contribution to the scene has been massive musically. one of his old plays was suzanna smith - sunshine days on smash which i think is great northern..didnt he play burning bush and that too.

heard that he did play mickey mouse but was told he did for a laugh...

But that is actually a great instrumental for guitar & the popcharts!!!

I think Classical Gas must have been played as a new release before it was a hit because whenever I buy a collection off someone who was on the scene in the early days, there's always a copy of it in there

She Devil were a Baltimore Md female group - I have a promotional pic of them in hi cut leotards etc. Sadly though this didn't help them as all of their Charm City Records were attrocious.

If you can remember Curtis "How can I tell her" on the same label with the motor bike revs for the intro and syndrums - well She Devil is 1000 times worse.

I remember Sam first playing Camp at the Wirrina....I cant swear but I'm almost certain it was on a Scepter issue.I may be wrong-but I don't think so.

As for Bill Purcell-If Pete can find me a copy for 25 quid I'll drive up th Wolverhampton,pay him the money,buy him a Balti,treat him to a piss up in his local,buy his wife the flowers for him to appologise for his drunken state,drive home,sell my copy,pocket the change & buy a nice cheapie from his list.

Funny someome to mention Happy Cats, i noticed my dad had brought that on grapevine found in someones Northern soul box but to me i thought he obviously not got a clue.

Sam helped usher in 'newies', many thought he was wrong, but he was, as always, ahead of the curve!

The tracks we consider 'modern oldies' today are because DJ's like Sam and Richard had the guts to embrace change and play the great and new (at the time) modern soul!

Sam, I'm not sure where you are, or even if you remember me, but you were a part of shaping this scene of ours!
