Pete- The Sandra Philips and Gwen and Rae were me as I had both as exclusives. It was my copy Soussan used to duplicate. No choice really as he gave me the Sandra Philips!

I remember that exact moment, I also had this on tape from the night. Russ, "Anybody want a copy, 7 quid!.....and it`s 8 for (sounds like) Russel Steel"

That was when the Pussycat boots were on sale in the record bar.

Mention of playing records getting repeated plays, I only ever taped there once and it was a couple of months after this, some time in May 1974.

"Panic" and "Too darn soulful" must have been the current flavours as they both got played an hour apart.

I'm fairly sure it was the first time that night for the Carstairs "It really hurts me girl"

 

Also... who remembers that 'vote' to continue the all nighters and have them end later in the day?

Yes l have got the tape as well, after Mike Walker, l think the 1st record was "Would Without Sunshine" 

Also Richard says "the 1st time ever at the Casino for The Carstairs" "going out to Judith by the way"

Yeah I remember the first night Terrible Tom was played there.
I got in there early and it was on, thought "kinell, whats this ......brilliant", totally blocked......it seemed to be on about every half an hour.

No Pete, that was his original he was selling for £7.00. As soon as the boot came out some of the DJs would flog their originals. At least that`s what I always thought, maybe Kev can clarify.

Hi Pete. He was offering an original on Columbia for sale in March 1974. The Pussycat pressing was not available until a few years later.

Remarkable Pete. This is almost identical to a live Wigan tape I made on the last Saturday in March 1974, down to the multiple plays of Dana Valery and Butch Baker as he was known at the time. There is only one track on my version that I can not name and Pat Brady could not identify it when I gave him a copy. Is one of the unknowns by 100 Proof 'One Man's Leftovers'? My C90 tape finishes off with Junior Walker's ' I Ain't Goin' Nowhere' and has the Olympics 'Same Old Thing' early on, but otherwise it is very, very similar to this one. The same sounds were also spun the previous Saturday on my first visit to the Casino - the occasion was so overwhelming, I must have said I'm going back next weekend with a tape recorder.

Don't recall it being around in 1974 but got the Butch Baker pressing on Cherub that summer. Snapped up the pink Pussycat version when I first saw it in 1975 or 1976. It predated the CBS Special Products release if I recall, so I didn't bother buying this one.

I haven't heard the tape Dave. It was a suggestion because the Barbour song sprang to mind. (and not much does at my age). Barbour version is faster paced to the old Jimmy Reed Jr. + diff writing credits.

I can confirm that the Dana Valery on the pink double sided Pussycat boot was about in '74, though for some reason it was scarce - were Columbia being a bit proactive with bootleggers at the time?

The plot thickens. I have named the unknown sound without hearing Pete's upload. So, it appears that this tape could well be one made off my master copy although I don't really recall making one for anyone apart from myself. The original C90 being of thinner tape got munched up a few times and then I made another copy of it before the tape-to-tape machine packed in. I have now remade the tape, a manually remastered version you could call it, and I play this on the last Saturday of March by way of an anniversary celebration.

How long was a dj set at WC back then. Going by the tracklist of the tape an average dj set was maybe 30/40 mins?

Cheers Pete. My mistake. It is a C120 tape, not the usual sort I tend to use. I still have the box somewhere but am currently in Texas doing a bit of crate digging. C120 was the longest tape available and being thinner, easily got caught up in the machine. Over the years, it got twisted several times hence the quieter and distorted patches. This was the only tape we had in our family at the time so it got absolutely hammered until it went to Wigan and then the tabs were broken out. For the record, you have put up the B side first and the A side second. Part of the tape is continuous but much of it selective as I just had to have Butch Baker and Dana Valery, the standout tunes from the previous Saturday, my first visit to the Casino.

It was the 1st version played I think.....certainly before Jnr Walker.

You're right, the Junior Walker version was played early doors next door off the album and came out on the b side of Take me girl I'm ready in 73/74

I was surprised to see Freddy Chavez being played that early on. I thought I was hearing it as newie in 76! No feckin' idea, obviously!

While on the subject of your Illustrious recording career. Just created a CD of "Crazy Northern Instrumentals" my fave is"Foot see" ( the Live version with Julian Covey Intro and. DG "Soul Clappin",one of  yours) .You bemoan the fact , in a prehistoric post , that you don't mind people nic in your stuff but at least "Giv e me Bit of Credit" .When I make up the liable how does "Foot see" recorded live  1974 by  "Wigan's Chosen One" sound?LOL Johnny Hart Malaga, Spain.
