  • Trust me it was 74, another one dropped off the Mecca playlist like a hot brick.  I have the add from NME from Selectadisc in a scapbook somewhere.

  • Steve and anyone else - I have posted a large amount of live tapes onto Mixcloud over the last 4 or 5 years - mainly Wigan but also Cleethorpes, 100 Club and so on - you'll have to search for them by

  • Pete- The Sandra Philips and Gwen and Rae were me as I had both as exclusives. It was my copy Soussan used to duplicate. No choice really as he gave me the Sandra Philips!

donkit, would love to hear that tape perhaps you could send it to Pete smith to convert to cd,???

Excellent thread encapsulating the strange world of northern soul, on what other subject would you get a discussion about and need to hear what happened to be played in a club on a particular night 43 years ago?

And on a tape also... Last weekend, I visited the Museum of Wigan Life taking in the small Casino exhibit but really enjoyed the live recording of Richard Searling DJing. As I see it, the more Casino recodings there are to listen to, the better.

Yep. Might also show some of todays Northern Disco DJ's that there was actually more than Frank Wilson and The MVP's ever played at Station Rd....... Quite literally M8.

P S,

While on the subject of your Illustrious recording career. Just created a CD of "Crazy Northern Instrumentals" my fave is"Foot see" ( the Live version with Julian Covey Intro and. DG "Soul Clappin",one of  yours) .You bemoan the fact , in a prehistoric post , that you don't mind people nic in your stuff but at least "Giv e me Bit of Credit" .When I make up the liable how does "Foot see" recorded live  1974 by  "Wigan's Chosen One" sound?LOL Johnny Hart Malaga, Spain.

Sounds hilarious.

It was the 1st version played I think.....certainly before Jnr Walker.

Junior walker was getting played BEFORE the Casino opened. It was played off his Peace and Understanig LP. I bought it in 1973 before the Casino opened.

Maybe so but what I meant was....Thelma Houston`s version was played at the Casino before Jnr`s.

Celebrated my buffday that very night crackin night too

As it was March 31st, I've just played the tape and sent the link to my nephew as it's his birthday - might as well start corrupting him sometime. The original tape that Barry got a copy of had several other tracks on (partly or wholly) but these have been edited off the version that Pete's put up. They include:

Sapphires - Slow Fizz

Jodi Mathis - Don't You Even Care

Casualeers - Dance Dance Dance

Instigation - I Don't Want To Discuss It

Hoagy Lands - Friends And Lovers Don't Go Together

Junior Walker - I Ain't Going Nowhere

The two unknown tracks are:

100 Proof Aged In Soul - One Mans Leftovers

Sam Dees - Soul Sister

Two variations to Pete's list are:

Olympics did The Same Old Thing

Detroit Shakers version of Help Me Find My Way

In my original C120 tape, which Pete correctly says was done right next to the speakers, there were odd bits of tracks cut out at the time so the whole song would not be there. One such track was Thunder by Lord Thunder. On the remastered version that I made in 1994 using 45's and LP's, there are 38 different tracks minus the Sam Dees which continues to elude me. I regret taping the Mylestones and Dana Valery so many times now as I could have squeezed in another half dozen other tracks but just had to have these two as they were the biggest tunes that night.

Great to see continued interest in the tape and thanks to Pete for putting it up.

One of the great things for me about putting up these old playlists is there is always the odd track you've forgotten about. And to my shame I'd forgotten just how good the Sapphires track is , A PROPER Northern Dancer.

I shall now go away and rectify my above crime and listen to it right now.

Detroit Shakers - Help Me was The Outsiders - Lonely Man. Cover ups were rife back then!

And it was slowed down as The original l.p. track was too fast !

errrr, I thought it was the other way round, it was speeded up ? I am completely puddled though and am probably wrong.

As I recall, a number of things seem to have been "speeded up" at Wigan. Including the attendees!!

The tape was made six months into Wigan's Allnighters, and whilst attendance was large, there was ample space on the dancefloor. Some of the dancers were incredibly fast bobbing side to side, and the majority were pretty nimble shuffling left to right and back again with a small number doing back-drops etc. Sitting on the front of the stage was a mesmerising experience but your hearing was out of order for the next 24 hours. Even approaching the speakers, you felt the soundwaves pushing on your chest.

Remarkable Pete. This is almost identical to a live Wigan tape I made on the last Saturday in March 1974, down to the multiple plays of Dana Valery and Butch Baker as he was known at the time. There is only one track on my version that I can not name and Pat Brady could not identify it when I gave him a copy. Is one of the unknowns by 100 Proof 'One Man's Leftovers'? My C90 tape finishes off with Junior Walker's ' I Ain't Goin' Nowhere' and has the Olympics 'Same Old Thing' early on, but otherwise it is very, very similar to this one. The same sounds were also spun the previous Saturday on my first visit to the Casino - the occasion was so overwhelming, I must have said I'm going back next weekend with a tape recorder.

100 PCP 'one mans leftovers ' was an early spin..it was a few pounds on Russ' June 74 list...

I have the album and even in today's world it`s still quite dance-able.

No Pete, that was his original he was selling for £7.00. As soon as the boot came out some of the DJs would flog their originals. At least that`s what I always thought, maybe Kev can clarify.

I think the boot was a quid or so.

yes...you are correct i bought the pussycat boot in 1974 for 85p..however i think some bought it a good while later for much more thinking it was an original

So the pussycat boot of Dana was £7 in 1974,whats that in today’s money against an original? And I doubt you would get 7 quid for the boot today?

The original Columbia Dana Valery was £7 in 1974. That's about £95 in today's money. But people on the Northern scene were all young then, so didn't have as much disposable cash as they do now! Hence lower prices then compared to now.

He say's the boot on the Pussycat label was a quid or so.
