:hatsoff2:HI ALL. THIS YEAR WILL BE 50 YEARS OF RARE SOUL, BACK THEN THERE WAS STILL A DEVELOPING YOUTH CULTURE IN THE UK, AFTER ALL IT HAD ONLY BEEN RECOGNISED FOR 10 YEARS OR SO, WITH YOUR TEDDY BOYS, BEATNIKS, BAN THE BOMB LEFT WING STUDENTS, MODS & ROCKERS, HOWEVER IT'S THE MOD SCENE THAT HAS IT'S ROOTS IN US R&B MUSIC AS WELL THE INFLUANCE OF CARABEIAN CULTURE & MUSIC,WHICH DEVELOPED IN CELLERS OF OLD HOUSES IN WHAT WAS THE BLACK AREAS OF LARGE CITYS, FOLLOWING ON FROM THE RIOTS IN SHEPARDS BUSH, THE BLACK MUSIC SCENE WENT UNDERGROUND, AS SUCH THE MODS FOLLOWED, IN LONDON MANY FAMOUS BUT SHORT LIVED CLUBS SERVERD THE BLACK COMMUNITY WITH ALL NIGHT BLUES,GAMBLING HOUSES WHICH PLAYED THE JAMAICAN SOUNDS OF THE DAY, LIKE MOST MUSIC SCENES OF THE DAY DANCE MUSIC IS A THROW AWAY SCENE AS THE DJ WAS THE TOP DOG, TO KEEP THE CLUB RUNNING HIS RECORDS WERE A SECRET AND HE WOULD NOT LET ANYONE KNOW IT'S TRUE IDENTITY PLAYED.

AS THE 6TS MOVED ON THE R&B CLUBS STARTED PLAYING MORE UPBEAT BLACK MUSIC, & EVEM THE NAME CHANGED FROM R&B TO SOUL, SOME PEOPLE FROM TIN PAN ALLEY SAW A MARKET IN BLACK MUSIC THAT WAS NOT IDENTIFYED AS WORTHY OF RADIO PLAY, BUT PEOPLE LIKE RONAN O'RILRY HAD A NEW APPROACH BY PLAYING MUSIC FROM A SHIP, THIS WAS CALLED PIRATE RADIO, CAROLINE, RADIO LONDON TOOK TO THE AIR WAVES FROM 1963 TO 67 WHEN NEW LAWS ON BROADCASTING WERE INTRODUCED, MOST ALLNIGHTERS WERE BY WORD OF MOUTH, THESE WERE LOCATED IN THE NORTH & IN LONDON,WHERE THE FIRST RECOGNISED ALLNIGHTER STARTED, CALLED THE SCENE CUB IN GT WINDMILL STREAT IN SOHO THE MUSIC POLICY WAS A MIXTURE OF US BLACK R&B, JAMAICAN SKA & ROCK STEADY.

I would like to think that we have the passion of the worlds longest running Youth Sub Culture, To celebrate 50 years of rare soul, it would be good if you could make at least once a week to pick a sound that you feel hits your soul, the choice is yours alone, however still dig out those 45s that the night has made you expose it to the world via SOULSOURCE RECORD CLUB 2018.

MY FIRST PICK WILL FOLLOW ON SHORTLEY AS I STILL CAN'T GET MY HEAD AROUND MY PC TRANSFERING MUSIC FROM MY COLLECTION INTO A MUSIC LIBARY, IT'S NOT FARE, ANYWAY PLEASE TRY TO CELABRATE 50+ YEARS OF SOUL. BELOW ARE SOME OF MY MEMORIES OF 50 YEARS, IF YOU HAVE PICTURES OF LAST 50 YEARS THAT RELATE TO THIS THREAD POST THEM PLEASE

Still have my original copy, one of the first imports I ever bought, from Keith Minshull actually, at The Torch in '69.

Great record.

Emitt Long Call Me - so good , thanks for posting.

Not sure how you can dance to a track like this, but my kinda soul.

If it were a choice between nodding to soul or dancing to pop i know which i'd rather do.

when its soul and you can dance to it thats what really makes a top dancefloor tune.

  • Obvious James Brown influences , but a stormer for sure.
  • A mover without a doubt, like it a lot.

Another one I found I had recently, just started playing what's left of my records, the Marvellous Mighty Dells, cheaper than chips as well, not a great one to dance to I'd guess but what a vocal as usual.

:hatsoff2:Hi All..  Here is a CLASSIC from 73 when records were hard to find but when you found them like this Ila Vann 45, you never parted with them, I have only had 2 copies my 1st from the Scotch man in Kings Lynn? & the copy in my collection, had to put it up because seeing it on JM auction I had to agree with every thing he said about it, also you must try and get it as it never comes up for sale, a great soul record. Great record.

:hatsoff2:Hi Mick...Back in 69 I was very much into the short lived youth sub culture Boot or Bovver Boys, although I thought that in 68 I was a young MOD? spending Saturday afternoon walking down Green St, going into the Chicken Run, watching the only English team to win the World Cup, then spending the rest of Saturday wandering round the West End ending up in the Flamingo Club (not dissimilar to the Wheel, music wise, although they did tend to play every Drifters record at the Wheel in 68/9?). in 69 as my sage will tell you it was REGGAE all the way, 69 was the year that the press called us Skinheads, & by the time I got out of DC to the sound of "band of gold" it was all over, in London,

It was not until I met Mick Smith (my Sage) in 71, that I went to the TORCH & met Keith,  However in 1970/1 I remember getting my first US imports, which were in the main Motown & Chess all labels, my first Revilot Golden World Ric-Tic 45s I got come from CONTEMPOS, either from the shop or by a Soul Pack, infact my first was the Magic Tones on MAHS Records in 1970, the Parlaments I had on a Track Backtrack LP of DETROIT records, Don't think I doubt your wisdom or memory, but I do find it interesting the North South divide that existed back then, in the strange world of Northern Soul?? KTF:thumbsup::g:

PS- the LP below Has some nice tracks on it, from the early days of our scene, well worth getting if you find a copy?? Right On Now!
