A new topic set up for new (or even longtime ) members to post up a Soul Source intro

Nothing major needed, just a quick heads up to all our members, letting them know that you are on here and ideally a brief bit about yourself.

It's a great way to break the ice!

Hello from Doyle

Hello everyone,

Newbee on site. My name's  Sarah. From leicestershire area.  Just a brief short and sweet introduction about myself. I admit I love all sorts of music, soul, motown,  ska, rock, big 60's fan... but can't stand today's ear ache music.

I've no hesitation getting on the dance floor but ive been very distracted the past few years.  The back legs are out and ready to gett moving again.

Hi, my name is Samantha. I am originally from Rotherham, but now based in Liverpool! I am studying the history of Northern Soul in Rotherham, so looking forward to digitally meeting some original Northern Soulies!

I was inspired to join Soul Source after viewing the you tube video of The Plebians (Plebs) in Halifax in 1967.  I used to go to this club aged 16 and my mother picked me up at 9 am the next morning.  Doors opened at midnight.  An old warehouse with stone flags.  The back door of The Upper George Pub led straight into the alley way and the club door on the left.  I saw Lee Dorsey live on stage.  At The Bin Lid in Dewsbury I saw The Fantastics many times, plus Clyde Mcphatter.  You just had to dodge the rockers on the walk up to the club who were always lurking around to intimidate, even if you were a girl!  I am very excited to join Soul Source.

Hi DLP welcome to Soul Source , hope you enjoy the ride.

I have a question that you maybe able to answer , after I watched The Plebians ( Plebs) in Halifax in 67 posted by Rick last night , it was quite clear that the band that was playing was Root & Jenny Jackson not The Impressions . I have never heard of any of their tunes played out anywhere and can't find anything of theirs on vinyl pre 68.

So my question is do you have any idea which (  as they where live on stage ) song Root & Jenny Jackson where singing at the time ?

Hi Happy Feet, thank you for the welcome.  Regarding which song Root & Jenny Jackson were singing at the time I would say 'Let's go somewhere'.  However, this song was recorded in 1969 and if the year is correct of 1967 (I was 16 yrs old and the year resonates with the age I was when I went to the Plebs), this song was not yet recorded by Root & Jenny Jackson.  I say 'Let's go somewhere' as this is a medium tempo song and looking at the crowd they are not dancing energetically as they would to say, 'Save Me', even though the go go dancers are up tempo.  I was not there on the night of Root and Jenny Jackson singing live, although I was there for Lee Dorsey and many other fabulous nights.  I believe the year is around 1969.  I left for Jersey in 1970.

Thanks DLP , for the response, I often wonder why anyone uploads to say YouTube, & put up footage from years past without the true musical backing , especially when there's a live act obviously playing in the background, still great footage , I'm amazed that nobody has yet come forward and recognised their Mum or Grannie . ( Mods move to the topic 1960s UK Mod / Soul Clubs  if in the wrong topic )

Hi I’m John, a septuagenarian but hopefully all my chairs are at home. Didn’t realise what I was liking aged 12/13 but it turned out to be soul, the usual suspects Motown and Stax, but also the Impressions, Dionne Warwick et c…. Music that was the roots of Northern Soul. Reader of Blues & soul and later Black Music, I wasn’t into Northern, going down the funk/Philly route in the 70s. But probably in the last 25 years I discovered the magic of Northern, have a giant CD collection and have been buying 45s for the last 10 years

Hi John, good to read your experience.  To dance is to Live in my opinion.  I now dance Salsa although feeling more tired the next day as time goes by!  FitzSoul from Leicester comes to Jersey each year and in 2025 this will be 7-9 November at The Merton Hotel.  As long as the music is playing I want to be on the dance floor.  I used to own vinyls such as 'Open the Door to your Heart', Darrell Banks, 1966 and "I can Sing a Rainbow" by The Dells, 1969.  You Tube is wonderful thing now although not quite the same as owning a vinyl.  Well done on your collection.

 Hi Soul Brothers & Sisters,

I am aged mid 60's and love my Northern Soul ever sinse I went to Royton Youth Club at 15 where I got my 1st taste of this fantastic music and after buying Blues & Soul magazine I sent off for my membership for Wigan Casino I remember it well, so at 16 and still at school it arrived and I couldn't wait ( this is a long story ) I asked one of the older lads how to get there from Royton and they told me to get the 400 bus to Bolton then the 13 bus to Wigan so it being Saturday night my mum asked me to go to the shop for her fag's I did and on impulse decided I was going to Wigan so kept her change and used it for my big night out which was a big adventure on my own, anyway it all went tit's up I got the 400 the wrong way yes the wrong way ended up in Stockport when i got of the bus at the terminal I asked where I could catch the number 13 bus to Wigan and was told there was no bus to Wigan but if I was lucky I could get a train but didn't know where the train station was but someone directed me and I frantically ran to the station and managed to find the right platform and Jumped on the train and with a huge sigh of releaf as I could see all the soulies with there over night bags, after arriving in Wigan followed everyone to the club but my next problem was hopefully getting in but luckilly while walking up the line of people  I recognised Mick Race so jumped into the queue with him and once them doors opened my feet didn't touch the floor it was a huge surge to get in and within minutes I was in phew!! later Mick asked me to go and sell some records he had in his box in Mr M's which I did and selling a few he gave me some money for selling them which incidentally was enough to give my mum her change when I got home ( she did ask where I was alnight so told her I was baby sitting and "where is my change" she said so I gave it to her... no wiser lol ) what a wonderful experience.

Told you it was a long story

Welcome aboard Andy, hope you're well..Paul

Hi everyone! I'm a vinyl collector from the United States, mainly into soul, R&B, and funk (as well as Brazilian music and jazz). I joined to learn more about rare 45s.

Also, my stepfather (still alive) was an R&B singer and bandleader named Kip Carmen who was signed to Hi Records in Memphis and cut some rare records himself.

Hello everyone, I was born in 1971 in the North West of England and I've been spoiled with good music from the area since then.

Soul, Northern Soul, Motown, Funk, Post Punk, Avant Garde, Chicago House, Acid, Downtempo, Space Pop, various blends of Jazz and on and on.

Currently listening to The Meters, Nujabes, Ryuichi Sakamoto and AIR

Favourite bands are A Certain Ratio and AIR.

I play bass, and jam with pals doing Talking Heads and Cure covers. Produced some of my own stuff, not released, on a very simple studio/DAW set up at home and at a friends summer house.

KTF.

I'd just like to introduce myself as a new member. I'm John (Johnny to some) and along with my better half Janine (Jaz) we run a local pub in Wakefield called The Kettlethorpe which oddly enough is situated in Kettlethorpe Estate. We only took over the pub in February and are slowly introducing different events to hopefully attract a wider audience/clientele. As such we're hosting a northern soul/motown event on Saturday 7th June so if you fancy strutting your stuff with a warm and friendly welcome then please feel free to join us. Here's hoping to seeing a few of you at a future gig or two. Thanks for reading guys and "keep the faith" everyone. Cheers Johnny.

HI all, seems such a long time ago, but I used to go to clubs in South Manchester and in Town (we called Manchester) as well as Cheshire. First club was The Sale Locarno 1968, also The Twisted Wheel, Sloopy's in Town. Sands in Stretford, Cheshire Cat in Nantwich and Alveston Hall near Crewe.
Interest was regenerated in the music (which one never ever forgets) when I head Richard Searlings show's on Jazz FM then Smooth Radio Manchester as well as BBC Radio Manchester & Stoke. Listen to Richard every Sunday on Solar radio.
Late 90's went to Beatin Rythmn in Tib Street Manchester and bought over 200 CD's over a few months with all the music I could remember from the day. I still have some of my original vinyl 45's and 12" LP's.

Tommy, 40, US (very sorry). Mostly had an interest in math rock, post rock, off kilter prog rock. didn't really start appreciating other genres until i started digging for records to sell, so a dilettante in most other genres. Not sure how to classify subgenres or scenes, funk, older r&b, southern, motown, memphis. The Vibrations, Howard Tate, Four Tops, Lee Moses are all great. There's too many artists for me to even remember
