Just found this Northern Soul auction on line with lots of Mint original US / UK Northern Soul singles and many unreleased Northern Soul singles that came from a big UK publishing company, might be interesting to some people here:

These came from one of the UK’s biggest music publishing companies library and includes many unreleased Acetates.

I am definitely going to be there on the day...

This is an Unreleased double sided Northern Soul / Funk UK Acetate by the Ad Libs from 1970. This Acetate will be sold at Wessex Auction Rooms on the 6th of March 2020 see details below. The track “One Guy One Girl is unreleased while the other side is a demo of a track that came out only in the US in 1970.

 

I am helping the publishing company selling these, I bought part of the library but not the Northern Soul stuff as they have been told it was worth a lot of money, so I said I will help them.

You'd have thought that JM would have had that back for reselling , got to be a better bet than some small auction house ... ?

They have used John's blurb though ...

Jim G, they have been in a climate controlled storage place for the last 20+ years, thanks god for that, this is the reason all the Acetates are in way above normal condition for 40-50 years old Acetates.

I was wondering if, with the amount of knowledge on this website, can anyone identify any of the Unknown and Unreleased Acetates included in this auction?

Read the small print if bidding - 26.34% buyers fee to be added to your bid ( if Im not mistaken)....Some great sounds there though

That percentage is for Omega Auction which is much higher then the Wessex Auction Room Northern Soul auction.

The percentage for the Wessex auction is 17.5 %, or you can always phone and leave bids with the auction house to save some money (it is slightly higher if bidding through the-salesroom website.

Hi, Thanks for bringing the auction to our attention. Also, useful to know it's cheaper to phone and leave bids, so thanks again.👍👍

Reading the website it looks like the Buyers Premium is 17% PLUS VAT, so a total of 20.4%. A winning bid of say £250 means you pay £301 PLUS postage. I assume postage will come in at about £10. Please correct me if I've got this wrong.

Do you need to register with them prior to the auction so they can take any bids in advance?

Sorry if I'm being a bit dim here, but isn't it the same auction with online bids going through 'The Saleroom' web site or am I missing something ?.....Where should I bid for The Wessex auction rather than through The Salesroom? ....Just a bit confused

OK, here is the breakdown, if bidding through "the-salesroom" there is an addition of 4.95% on top of the auction house commission of 17%, which could be a lot on high end items, I always prefer to either bid live on the phone, or leave my top bid with the auction house, when you ring them to leave a bid with them they take your details and register you as buyer.

Wessex Auctions charge the lowest commission of any auction house in the UK at 17%,  and on most other auction houses it is normally 25%-30% (and higher at Christies or Sotheby’s and Other Music specialist Auction houses) !!!

Regarding postage, I would ring the auction house for a quote, it will probably be cheap for 1 single and will go up depending on size and weight.

Their packing is great as I bought records from them before.

I hope this answers all the questions above.

Hi Merve,

My understanding is that "The Saleroom" is a sort of virtual, online sale room and is how you would bid as if you were down in the actual sale room in Chippenham. It saves you the time and expense of attending the actual sale in person. However, there is an additional cost to the standard fees. The Standard fee is 20.4% (including VAT) but if bidding via the virtual "Saleroom" the cost goes up by another 5.94% (including VAT). That would make a total of 26.34%

Modboy was being helpful and saying you could instead just ring the auctioneers and say "I'm willing to go up-to £xxx on lot no. 123. That way you save yourself the additional cost  and pay 20.4%.

Again, thanks to Modboy for the tip. 

It sounds like the Wessex Auctions are charging BUYERS less than many others auction houses which is good. But this isn't like ebay or John Manship where if you win an item for £100, you pay £100. If you bid say £100 you'll end up actually paying £120.40 with the lower rate or £126.34 with the higher rate.

Yes, Bo Diddley, just trying to make clear that the VAT is not on the full amount of the item, but just on the auction house commission.

Just wanted to clarify buyer charges as the above post is a bit misleading.  

Wessex Auctions - in the room/phone: 17%+VAT (20.4% inclusive of VAT) Online bidding 21.95%+VAT (26.34% inclusive of VAT)

Omega Auctions - in the room/phone: 21%+VAT (25.2% inclusive of VAT) Online bidding (on own own site) 24%+VAT (28.8% inclusive of VAT)

As most people bid online, this means an additional 2.46% at Omega than at Wessex, so not double as the above post suggests.

Buyer charges are added to the hammer price so should be taken into account when bidding.

Just received the 45 purchased. Not an expensive record but bloody hell they charged £12 for p & p. Ok the registered bit is £7.80  ( I think) but it was in the cheapest box with no stiffeners.

Considering they  made approx 50% in selling  and buyers commission you'd have thought they could have done at cost.

Received a great acetate from this auction here in the US, spoke to them directly about how to package as knew they weren't too experienced with vinyl and they did a really solid job of making sure it got here safely, appreciate them listening.
