I seriously never thought there would be an Atlantic 45 stocker (Bettye Swann) that would break the £125 mark...

And there's always the odd non-soul thing that goes for a few quid ... thumbsup

Kurt Harris did make me look twice!! Blimey!!!! Thank you for posting......Rob

I know mate,me too,and if anything i thought the value was dropping a bit due to the amount of copies cropping up for sale! If you set sale it for 1k anywhere it would just sit there for ever more!

I sold a NM Kurt Harris on here a few years ago for 225 quid I think it was.

And that is what it is worth in my opinion.

I was amazed to see it going for around 500 quid recently.

I can hardly believe someone would pay over a grand - Just complete bonkers.

Yup, it’s great salesmanship, and it works.

The next copy that comes up will likely be the more desirable east coast VINYL press.

Or maybe the one sided pressing , most possibly from South Wales via Kidderminster and definitely a bootleg , in an original Diamond record sleeve worth more than the vinyl .

Look at popsike for example - there are over 200 copies of it on there alone - not to mention the hundreds of other copys that change hands outside of e bay.

I am absolutely staggered where this has gone price wise

I thought the Canadian 'Apex' release was the toughest to find and its the least of all versions I've seen for sale over the years.

Never sold on discogs though, is this the rarest

Has anyone seen one?

Not 100% trusting Discogs, I thought I’d do a little more research and found this Italian Stateside discography, which has it on……interestingly they seemed to use the same/similar picture sleeve for a number of artists:

45cat

Stateside (Italy)

Discography of 7" vinyl records on the Stateside (Italy) label on 45cat.

I can understand someone paying a big chunk for the Canadian issue on apex as it is rare - I didn't even know it was released on stateside in Italy so yes - understand the mindset

I collect uk issued 45s so happy to pay a premium for 45s that are rare in uk that sold millions in the usa that are not in demand on northern soul scene - its part of collecting - I get it

I could understand someone parting with a a grand of cash for the Canadian release, as there are probably a small group of collectors out there collecting Canadian 45s and it is really rare on Canadian - but I have no idea why someone would part with this amount of cash for a record that is not rare on usa diamond

For example - back in the late 80s Kurt Harris and Joan bakers everybody's talking were popular on the dancefloor - both mega tunes at the time and both on USA Diamond records.

So look at the sales on popsike of Joan Baker v Kurt Harris - you have to use popsike as a level whether you like it or not as it is an indicator - regardless

there are 70 odd copy's of original Joan Baker on popsike versus 200 plus originals of Kurt Harris

So Joan Baker is indeed the rarer 45 (and much better 45 imo) so should be more expensive that the kurt harris ?

I must admit - I do not understand this madness whatsoever.

So when Joan baker gets re discovered and played again will we expect that to be 2000 plus quid ?

Thoughts from a record collector who really does not understand

Hope not , it's on my buy again bucket list .

Its a lovely 45, soulful, harmonies are perfect, Its a very dark record as its lyrics are about when everyone talks about your relationship when you split up with your wife or girlfriend

I'm never selling my copy

But the point I was making was about rarity of 2 records on the same label

Joan baker is twice as rare as Kurt Harris and a MUCH better soulful record IMO

However - Why has Joan baker been forgotten about since the 80s ?

Very odd as its a totally amazing record

I suppose it will be inevitably re activated by djs at some point and end up really expensive

Edited by Gaz T

Not many for sale because its fabulous and people quietly buy it and keep it

you can never get bored with it

Mad it has not been played by djs since the 80s as it was really massive then

I have so many great memories when I play the 45 at home

takes me back like a tardis

We used to go to this pub / event place called the Raven in Whitchurch in the 80s

Some years ago I struggled to sell Kurt Harris for £40

i bought an electric drum kit, local to me, about 5 yrs ago, off a rockabilly. i was in his lounge, Kurt Harris was on the turntable, turns out, he's had it years, paid pennies for it (suits the rockin scene apparently).

like a lot of others, i never in a million years , expected a 4 figure sum for it. crazy price

Kurt Harris is a fairly common record for such a big sound. I’ve stumbled across three copies crate digging in the States. It was a massive sound at The 100 Club in the early 90’s, shooting to the top of many wants lists. It’s now a £500 record all day long in mint condition - still a highly desirable record. Joan Baker may be rarer but it doesn’t have the dance floor appeal that Kurt Harris does. A thousand quid for Kurt Harris defies belief but if you’re a billionaire musician living on a private Caribbean island, it’s pocket change. I paid $3 for my copy but left one priced at $400…
