In the early days in Hampshire & Germany - TWheel,Torch,BMecca,Casino etc

That ferry had a few missing passengers - good job we weren't on "Free Enterprise" one! Now thats a good story - keep enjoying the scene - if you ever in the area of Sheffield/Worksop/Rotherham check out Soul Galore, Dinnington - bring your own stick a rock biggrin.gif See events calendar, cheers buddy, 'schunnnn!!!!!

Either of you based in Chatham during the 7Ts/8Ts? The Green Howards did have barracks in Gillingham as well as the REs at Brompton Barracks....PTP was in the army all over the place but I don't think he had much time to go to soul do's....Jo

I knew Dave Gelling when I was stationed at Maidstone '71 - '74 and still got some of the vinyl I swopped with him. Used to knock around a bit with him and a couple of other army soulies - Steve Dartnell from Preston, and Glen Chambers (a Londoner I think), both RE's.

Didn't get up to much down South, stride around Maidstone in our Skinners and Parallels, drink in the "Wig & Gown, occasional nights at The Avenue in Gillingham, or trips to Camberley. There was also a short lived Northern club above a pub in Canterbury St, Gillingham, about '72 - bloody brilliant too.

Also new Stevie Walsh very well, but can't remember if it was at Maidstone or Germany.

Haven't seen any of them since the old days though.

I've always reckoned it was the lads in the services who were responsible for spreading Northern Soul throughout the UK :(

Well I was Jo - I thought you looked familiar. Was it the Brompton Stomp?

Sadly, I wasn't aware of "Bogarts" in those days - it must have been a closely guarded secret amongst the civvie locals.

Kev, Bogarts didn't start until the early 8Ts but in the 7Ts, there was Tonbridge Church Hall run by Steve Guarnori and Kim Styles...and I brought some of the lads over from Gillingham over. I used to club dj up the Avenue from the early 8Ts onwards. Before that it was the Central RnB club - Prince Buster and Major Lance appeared there along with plenty of other soul stars. I'll have a rummage around in my old Evening Post clippings. I only did the 'Bop' once - my club of choice was the Pembroke Club....all the bad girls love a sailor :P:(:D Jo

Hi Jo,

Well that explains why I didn't go to Bogarts - why didn't Graham tell me it didn't start 'till the 8T's?

You're right about The Avenue, I went when it was the Central but I'd forgotten the name. Don't ask why but I always remember seeing the Fantastics there. Also saw Jackie Wilson at the Tudor House at Bearstead, that was a cracking night, and another good venue. :P

Jo, I reckon that the next time there's an RSME open day or any big squaddie/matelot reunion, we should put on an all-dayer the same weekend. King Charles Hotel, Brompton? What do you think? Be good to see some of the faces posting, or mentioned, on this thread.

Derek - Kettering - Ex RE. Nice to know the Sappers are everywhere again. Used to do the Tin Hat, Railway club late 6Ts, early 70Ts and then went south to RSME when the Chattenden and Brompton Stomps were the in thing (women the only reason?). Then spent 14 years in Germany, so missed out a bit. :D Did manage the Wheel, Torch, CASINO and Top Rank Hanley. Now in the Mids doing Stoke, Wolves etc etc. :D

Hi Derek and welcome to SoulSource.

Small world then - before joining up I used to do the Tin Hat; the George, Wilby; Nags Head, Wollaston; Blisworth Hotel; Shades; and of course the Earls Barton allnighters.

Then had to settle for the Brompton Stomp for a while - not quite the same really.

Give us a shout mate if you're ever back in the vicinity of the RSME.

Somewhere along the line we must have met. Did you live in Kettering or nearby? I remember the George as thats wher all the punchups were held with the Corby lads, and the bouncers were vicious thugs who liked to pick on 16 year olds!!! Did you see Johnny Johnson and the Equals at th Tin Hat? Whats the scene like in Kent?

I used to live in and around Northampton, and at Corby for a while when I worked at the Co-op in Kettering.

I don't remember seeing any live acts at the Tin Hat, but I was more an occasional visitor than a regular. Always thought the George was really friendly too - OK you could tell if trouble was expected by the things that were stuck in waistbands and belts, and at Blisworth everyone drank Newcastle Brown so they had a bottle handy - but I took that as being par for the course in those days.

Incidentally, I'm going on a nostalgia trip next friday - a County Soul Clubs Reunion at Wellingborough, with DJ's from venues such as the George; Tin Hat, Freewheelers etc, etc.

The scene in Kent is pretty good mate, top 2 venues IMO are "Stolen Hours" at Ramsgate/Margate, and Kent Soul Club at Rochester. Plus it's easy travelling to Bisley, Lightwater, Farnborough etc.

Recently travelled to Rothwell for the "Cream Cracker", a nite run by another ex sapper - Kev Such. In fact there were 5 or 6 others there too but I'm useless at remembering names.

PM me Derek, if your ever coming back down South.

Kev. My son lives in Southend so may try to tie in with a visit to him, it's only over the bridge. Went to the Casino revisited and apart from it being surreal the wife(gill) and I thought it was a good night. Met Richie Pitts, who is a really nice bloke, and obviously got trolleyed; maybe thats why I enjoyed it so much. Got a charity gig to do in Shrewsbury on the 15th and then it'll be Stoke followed by Lanzarote for drunk.. I mean Soul in the Sun. FYI I joined in 71, left in 93. Mostly Germany, Osnabruck, Hameln, Bielefeld :g: etc etc, but had 3 stints in Chatham and Chattenden sleep3.gif . Most of the soulies I met in my time were REME/RAOC.

Unlucky  Chattenden was the posting to nowhere......Chatham/ Brompton wasn't too bad in the 7Ts. At least there was still a bit of life left in the town and there was a decent record shop - K-TWOS - if you ever went in and bought records, I probably sold them to you  Jo

:) Sorry John but I've already made arrangements for this weekends soulin'. Will defo pay you a visit in the future though.

If yourself and any of the other lads on here want to meet up with a bit more notice how about Margate on 24th November?

Not that I'm trying to push it but "Stolen Hours" 1st Anniversary has 2 rooms, free vinyl for the first 100 tickets, is in a hotel with discounted rooms :yes: , and if enough rooms are booked an allnighter is on the cards.

(See events for details.) Like you say, it would be nice to put faces to names.

Failing that, or as well as, I intend to get around eventually to all events mentioned here. (Good job Dave Moore hasn't added to this thread 'cos I can't afford the flight!)

Hi John.

 Turned out to be a pretty quiet weekend for me. Went to Wellingboro friday, but my plans for Southampton (Saturday) and Manchester (Sunday) got the boot. Didn't realise I was 'booked' as Dad's Taxi to run family around re my daughters wedding plans.

Had a guided tour of the "Ninja School" recently, and have met a few of your old mob. Seems a lot are going abroad to earn big bucks rather than be put behind a desk - don't blame 'em!

I'll be up to Rugby before Prestatyn mate.

Hi Guys.

Does anyone know an ex squaddie by the name of T.DEWEY, and is he still on the scene?

He's probably ex R.E. as I picked up some of his old vinyl which his ex partner was flogging at the Black Lion car boot - just down the road from the R.S.M.E. at Brompton.

If he can tell me what Richard Searling has written, along with his signature, on the sleeve of the Grapevine "Hey Little Way Out Girl - Del Capris", then I'll get his vinyl back to him. There's a few other pieces too.

I'd like to think someone would have done the same for me, but I went back for mine after a year or two!
