Where Do You See Our Scene Going To In The Future

There have been many discussions on SS, about overkill, boots vs ovo, oldies - rare - modern, so where do you think our scene will be in lets say 5 to ten years time, is it going to explode or implode , will the commercialism finally take over, so that its full of none soulies, will it die out, will there be 20 venues running in every single town, or will it come to a complete standstill, what do you think?

Contrary to what people seem to be saying at the moment, overkill etc. I think the scene is very strong and is getting stronger. It's as if someone threw the whole thing up n the air about a year ago and slowly but surely it is all coming back down to earth and all the pieces are finally fitting together. There is certainly more co-operation re dates etc in our area and I hope that other areas will do the same by getting away with everyone trying to do a do every month but sharing it out and settling happily for 4 a year then there' is plenty of room for all.

If the last couple of years are anything to go by...I think there will just as many be venues...but now this is the thing more of them will turn into older peoples "disco's" as is happening now..I like to travel around and have a look at different venues...I feel there are actually very few true Soul do's..with true soulies many are just places that stay open later than the local pub, cost very little to get in full of folks that 30 years ago were disco'ers the john travoltas and shirley basseys.....believe me they are back..Ive seen em

thats a good point. there are younger ones coming in, who are really into the northern stuff, but defo not enough of them and we are all getting older!

Totally agree with you, why do people keep moaning, why not just enjoy it for what it is and be thankfull how lucky we all are to have experienced something so special in our lives

well , thats more or less what I think, that sometimes , some venues are more like disco,s, we try to choose venues that cater for the music we prefer, but that initself, can stop us trying something somewhere else!

well when im at a venue like that...I feel there is something missing...I think there is more to our scene than just a 60's motown type disco....I hope so ,or have I been living in a dream world the last 35 or so years

are we dying breed, literally, inyears to come , when we just dont do it any, more,forwhat ever reason, how will the scene be, I have noticed, some people i know, who used to travel every where, right accross the country, sundenly change track, and say, theres more to life than soul, had enough ect, so are the people who have been soulin if you like for a very long number of years, the ones who are really, keeping it going at the momment, so what happens, we we all decide thats it, what will be left?

i agree theres loads more to the soul scene i personally love it all, rare, oldies, RnB even some modern but there are some who just like a one specific genra which is great if thats what you want, like i said people enjoying them selves

oldies are what first got me interested in this fantasic scene and i still ocassionaly like listening to them

Its simple with out new blood the scene will deteriorate, and wigan shopping malls, northern soul 2007 CDs and the like is just making things worse, i've been playing CDs with good punchy base, soulful vocals and 70's movers to a few people not on the scene and they love it, this is where the answer lies, Marketing, marketing, marketing!! done in the right way Northern soul will live for ever!

We debate this no end, i dont want to sound condesending (or what ever the word is) or owt like that but, a load of middle aged people trying to work out what the youth are into will never work, you need to here it from the younger generation of the scene today, you take the darker side of soul music along with the groovey (horrid word but it works for how im trying to explain it) the limitations are endless, we need to move out of back rooms at 'clubs' and move into out of the way trendy clubs and bars thats where its at smart venues win the day, along with boss tunes. its not rocket science.

I think the scene will be a lot, lot smaller in twenty years time. This is due to the fact that the majority of people on the U.K. scene are in their forties and fifties now and I cant see too many of them at allnighters in their 70s, although there will be a few that will prove me wrong I'm sure. I'm 33 and am still one of the young ones on the scene and I've been into Soul music since I was 17, so there isn't a lot of new blood getting into it to sustain the amount of events on at the moment.

I think in the UK, which has the biggest scene, there will be a major drop off in events. However, there will be a few core clubs throughout the country with old bastards like myself ( I'll be in my fifties by then) still spinning tunes to each other. The scene in Ireland, Spain and other European countries is smaller but much younger. Perhaps, there will be European weekenders where a much smaller scene gets together to celebrate Soul Music.

On a personal note,I would love to go to an allnighter where there was just one room with a host of DJ's playing all styles of Soul from the 6ts/7ts/8ts right up to present day quality real soul. I think much more Soul fans in their twenties and thirties have a more eclectic taste and it would be good to see that tendency being expressed behind the decks. I live in hope. Still a great scene today. We don't have to hammer the nails into the coffin for a long time I think.

I went to a West London Church on Wednesday to see The Fulham Big Band playing mainly 1940's, 50's melodies. I know one of the sax players. In preparation for my horns section on my songs I hope to cut in Detroit I wanted to see how they did it from that era! The place was packed and at £6 entrance fee, the church will have made some well needed funds. Out of the 18 musicians, only 2 did not have glasses, only one woman (on keyboards) and the drummer was 84 years old. It was a great night and I will go again, wherever they perform.

As long as there are songs with real musicians playing on them, I see fans of all ages attending. Whether the term big band slowly dissapears or not, I do not know. What I do know is that the soul music I enjoy is getting older, like me. I can see maybe me attending a church venue in 2030 listening to renditions of Beatles music and Motown hits as oldies...and I am not religious.

The Europeans where the average age is far younger than the UK, the music policy differs greatly as well with elements of all genres thrown into the mix. Thats the first thing the UK scene has to do, go across the board. I don't mean the across the board clubs already profess to be "across the board" playing safe with the likes of Angie Stone and Drizabone, records with a strong northern flavour.

Dj's should be free to play from all eras, 60's, 70's, 80's, crossover...soul with a funkier flavour, anything that will attract the youngsters. There are very few venues than can claim to be really across the board and very few that do it properly.

Those that do have a strong younger audience, keen on the music and eager to come back for more. Those that continue with the 60's only policy or oldies will only see their audience coming through the doors on zimmers and for the lazy b*stards who can't be arsed to walk those annoying electirc buggies that seem to be the rage these days
