The thread that Joan initiated about playing records you don't like had a few titles dotted around but how about you didn't like either at first hearing or even for ages but then you had a change of heart perhaps. To kick it off:

Tear Stained Face - Don Varner

Didn't like this from the day I first heard it (think it was the Casino) until many years later when Mark Bicknell played the original at home on his hi-fi and I heard the 'farting' background horns for probably the first time. It was clean and undistorted and sounded fabulous and I absolutely love it now.

I sold one last year for 250 or 300 quid, though it books at 500 or so, doubt if anyone would get that for it

The Flasher by Mistura ft Lloyd Michaels. When I first heard it I almost throw my iPod away. WTF is this thing and how did it ever got played on the northern scene??? Then I listened to it over and over again. I love it now. Actually, when I always play it to people who doesn't know anything about northern soul and they love it to.

If I ever make a movie, that's definitely gonna be in the soundtrack

Agree with Joe, most are just over exposed & so sound tired, hide 'em away in a darked room for a couple of years & they'll sound fresh again, unless it's R&B then just leave 'em hidden away in a darkened room, fullstop.

Patience Valentine..If you don't come or whatever it's called...brrrrrrrrr And that will never grow on me!

I didn't used to like Barbara Mason that much.....I know!!! And now I've come to realise that it's probably one of the best records I'll ever hear. I don't know why I didn't take to it originally, I think I thought it was a bit tinny and one dimensional. And then one day I heard it out at a venue and it sounded like Northern Soul really should - lots of stops and starts, a great vocal and a fantastic melody. Great stuff :D

I didn't like Roger Hatcher - Sweetest Girl in The World. Couldn't understand why mates had paid thirty five quid for it, which was the going rate at the time. Thought it to be repetative twee crap. However over the years I mellowed on it and found a soulfulness that I hadn't appreciated before.

On the Northern side, the first tune that springs to mind which has me reaching for the switch is Don Thomas's COME ON TRAIN

I can only assume you've not heard the Chicago Cubs version 'Pennant Fever' on Chess (IIRC, can't be bothered going looking, may be Cadet?). Stay well clear.

I used to hate this when I first heard from a tape, it dindn´t sound Soul to me, until I first heard it in played at the 100 club and was absolutely trapped by it, I love it since....this would bring another good topic: records that sound awful at home or car, in a CD or MP3 player, but are brilliant in the right place: allnighter/soul night, with a good sound system and high volume...

When I first heard Prophecy's 'Rain In My Life' I thought it was awful - the gasping delivery sounded like Marvin Gaye's constipated younger brother in the throes of an asthma attack. But on revisiting recently, what a grower! I don't even hear the ridiculous intakes of breath any more, just the desperation that the guy's girl mustn't leave him. Can't stop playing it. And squealing along with him

Perhaps it was the 'Tunes you dont like ' bit that prompted us to post up tunes we dont like !

Thats what gave it away for us !!!
