Just recieved a mint copy of 'Susan Maughan - That other place' through the post. What a fabulous version this is. Really pleased I found one, they seem to be getting quite scarce. I managed to pick this one up for £14 and I think it's worth every penny and more besides. I know it wasn't one of Susans big hits so not sure how many of this sold on it's release in 1964? 'That other place' is actually the 'B' side, with 'Little things mean a lot' on the 'A'. I spent around 2 months looking for a mint copy, so don't think it's that readily available.

Any thoughts on this fantastic female version of the 'Wade Flemmons' classic?

Its great but near the end she says something and it sounds dead Durham but its cute.

It's not hard to find or expensive - but I agree with all of you, it's a great version

Not much to choose between Susan and Wade on "That Other Place", really (apart from the difference in price!) - they're both great.

Can also recommend another later Susan Maughan 45, "Call On Me" for anyone who likes the likes of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Stay Awhile". Big, busy production, with Ivor Raymonde at the controls. Could almost be a Dusty outtake really. Great version of Diane Renay's "Kiss Me Sailor" on the A side, possibly even better than Diane's original IMO.

First single i got sent through the post, sent me the wrong one anyway got 3 lps with it on cost £3 for all three, the single was a tenner i never got back.

Why does a pop cover version of a soul masterpiece receive such credibility - there's nothing particularly soulful about the SM version IMHO.

i prefer the arrangement on susan maugham too. its the same with a lot of british major label covers imo abigger budget and using the original to try and improve on.

It's not a hanging offence.

There was some stupendous music made in the 60's, I've got some 25,000 tracks in my itunes and 15,000 of those must be 60's, I'd say only 20% if that are soul music, 60's pop music is just brilliant. Girl groups, psychedelia, freakbeat, harmony pop, Beatles and so on...music that'll last forever. It's not a crime to love 60's pop music as well as soul.

The Susan maughan record is a good midtempo dancer. OK put it another way, I've only saved about 6 records from my UK collection (I sold my Chapter 5 on friday) and they include Esther phillips "just say goodbye", willie tee "walking up a one way street", Manchesters Playboys "I feel so good", benny Spellman "Fortune teller", Jimmy Beaumont "You got too much going for you" and Susan maughan "That other place". The rest have gone.

Hi All....I must agree with you Pete I have been told there are 3 more versins of the other place, I have no idea of artists I supose it would not be that hard to find out if you contacted the Music Publisher, AAAHHH! the stench of Soho and walking down TIN PAN ALLEY, Just come into my mind for some odd reason! HI Pete I think they are all classics in there own right, esp Manchester Playboys I can remember Mick S pulling that and the Chi=Lptes "Love Bandit" of one of his stock shelves when i got my BOK TO BACH ISSUE! Ican't see me ever parting with that one it's far to elusive and rare. my record of the week is J E Young & Tonics on TOAST, thats why i dont sell anmore as i keep on rediscovering bits in my own collection that are almost forgotten??
