Guest kerby
I just like to say it WAS mentioned here on Soul Source that Friday / Sat in the Tower the music would be predomently Classic Oldies and Motown in the main , and then from Sat/Sun 3am the music in the Tower would be a little rarer , i saw that on obe of the Golden 101 posts!! I would also like to say i DO NOT CONDONE UNNECESARY REPEATS! Sure there are times when i may have slipped up and repeated a tune thats been on before me , but i can ASURE everyone i go out of my way to try and avoid repeating records especialy on purpose " with a dont give a toss attitude" I had two spots at the Tower at the weekend, Friday 10 thru 11 which i did play classic oldies from the Late WheeL, Torch and Catacombs as i lnew Wigan would be well covered thru out the weekend, i was luckie i suppose being on second i did not repeat anything Sean had played before as far as i remember. Sat i knew would be diffrent as i knew i was on quite late and i listened VERY intently to what was played before me right upto Butch who went on before me!! I will list my set below for the All Niter and will say in advance that there are 3 or 4 records there that either TIM BROWN /BUTCH played in their Rarest of the Rare set at 6pm and i didnt know that as i wasnt present for that ( one has to eat ya know) . But ther was a 9 hour break before they were reapeated so i hope the SOUL POLICE will take that into consideration I followed Butch and was on from 4am thru 5-30am for what its worth this was the set not a Frank Wilson in sight TANGEERS -- LET MAY HEART AND SOUL BE FREE -- OKEH Demo BAD WEATHER INC -- I NEVER KNEW -- BAD WEATHER Demo BERNARD WILLIAMS -- ITS NEEDLESS TO SAY -- HARTHON AL GARDNER --- SWEET BABY --- SEPIA CONSTELLATIONS --- I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO -- GEMINI STAR SHEPHARDS -- HOW DO YOU LIKE IT -- MIRWOOD Demo WOODEN NICKELS -- NO BODY BUT YOU -- OMEN Demo PARISIANS -- TWINKLE LITTLE STAR-- DEMON HOT SHARPETS -- LOST IN A WORLD OF A DREAM -- SOUND CITY Demo THE EL COROLS -- CHICK CHICK -- ROUSER TONI --- TRY MY LOVE -- TEN STAR SYNG McGOWAN -- THATS WHAT I WANT -- HOPE TURLY RICHARDS --- I FEEL ALRIGHT -- COLUMBIA Demo BARBARA BANKS -- RIVER OF TEARS-- VEEP Demo INSPIRATIONS -- YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND-- MIDAS ISONICS -- SUGAR -- KAMMY BOBBY VALENTINE -- USE IT BEFORE YOU LOSE IT -- FANIA CHARLES JOHNSON -- NEVER HAD A LOVE SO GOOD -- ALSTON MONTCLAIRS -- HEY YOU -- ARCH OTIS LEE -- HARD ROAD TO HOE -- QUAINT GWEN DAVIS -- MY MAN DONT THINK I KNOW -- SOUND STAGE Demo GERI HALL -- WHO CAN I RUN TO -- HOT LINE CODY BLACK -- IM SLOWLY MOULDING-- KING STEVE MANCHA -- FRIDAY NIGHT -- GROOVESVILLE Demo MARVA LEE -- IF YOU CANT BE TRUE -- ATCO INVITATIONS -- WATCH OUT LITTLE GIRL -- MGM Demo DARROW FLETCHER -- WHAT HAVE I GOT NOW -- JACKLYN DEON JACKSON -- THATS WHAT YOU DO TO ME -- CARLA FRANK DELL -- HE BROKE YOUR GAME WIDE OPEN-- VALISE JACK MONTGOMEREY -- BABY TAKE A CHANCE ON ME -- REVUE BALLADS -- I CANT SEE YOUR LOVE -- WEE IKE AND TINA TURNER -- SOMEBODY NEEDS YOU -- LOMA LARRY ATKINS -- LIGHTEN UP -- HIGHLAND Demo Bob Hinsley followed me and also played loads that hadnt been heard all weekend up till that point!! Guest
Dear Comrades! Just watched the You Tube footage of the semi final stages of the dance comp. At last I can show my students something exciting, impressive and contemporary when they ask me what northern soul dancing is like! I can also legitimately claim I was in the comp (first round criminally overlooked despite nice hat). Well done to all concerned and a true champ was discovered. Overall I had a great time as usual although I agree with what I think some people were trying to say about the dancefloor. If I understand correctly people were complaining that without talc the dancefloor wasn't as good as the one at Northallerton Town Hall. By complete coincidence there is a special Xmas Cracker on at the said venue on 19th DEC (01677 426791 for tickets). Yes Blackpool a town of contrasts! All Hail the Leader!! Comrade Moustache! ImberBoy
Blackpool, this is the third time I have been and every time I go I kinda have the same experiences, but isn't that what we go for? Come on peeps it's the Kev Roberts machine, nothing more and nothing less and when it's gone you'll all miss it? The price is fair for what you are going to get, as long as you do the whole weekend, just doing one night at that price is expensive. Blackpool has no room for cynicism because it is the ultimate "divvy" weekender and of course you will hear Wigan sounds and the same old same old, isn't that the whole point of it? Now onto the point of hearing a record played three times, in theory this is unacceptable but the reality bridge is that you aint ever going to get all of the DJ's standing around listening intently so as their spot is fresh and original. I do have some criticisms about the weekend. My first is the Waffen-SS door staff. Yes they have a hard job to do but Mr. Roberts should be briefing these people up and pointing out that we are a bunch of middle aged mums n dads having a party rather than a gang of hooded Slip Knott fans out for a mosh pit! I watched in shock as I saw a lady with talcum powder being whisked away faster than a tramp on chips! Come on Kev we all know we need door staff but you have to keep your finger on the pulse mate. On the question of talc why is it such a problem? I did hear that there was a bill raised for £400 for floor cleaning last year? Not sure if this is true but it's surely a poultry figure based on the money generated and I would suggest that if the Tower Ballroom is so against talcum powder on the floor then it surely is the wrong venue to celebrate all things Wigan Casino? My next and final criticism is aimed squarely at the numpty mum who had their son or daughter complete with X Factor entourage who managed to single handedly piss off every dancer on the main floor with their display of disrespectful drunken antics. We had a very sexy young leggy blonde and her fanny struck boy friend pawing at each other totally oblivious as to the explosive violence that was brewing in near by soulie circles. It was here that the door staff did act decisively and proactively by removing the knobheads from the floor. I heard one or two remarks from some very dubious characters who where going to take matters into their own hands if this had not been stopped. Mum, who ever you are please pay attention to this, if you are on you mid life crisis its ace to see your kids having fun but you should be aware of the impact this may have on other people, look after yer kids love, this nearly ended in tears! On the up side for Blackpool its not that expensive, you have a year to save for the next one and as far as the music is concerned whilst up stairs they are serving the meat and veg of the northern soul Scene, down stairs is mega modern room! I spent the most time in here listening to some ace music and having a great time. I like Blackpool, I like the fact that it's unpretentious and never tries to be any thing other than what it is, and that is Northern Soul Anthems played to an eager crowd in beautiful surroundings. It's Middleton this coming weekend and we are so very lucky to have such a diverse scene all within the grasp of normality. Thank you to Richard Serling and Kev Roberts plus all of the people involved with mega event. On a very personal note I had a problem with my tickets, Kev sorted this out quickly with no fuss or fanfare, thanks and I will be there next year, now where did I put my white belt and Spenser's? Best dancefloor in the world, not even the best dancefloor on the golden mile... and I would suggest that if the Tower Ballroom is so against talcum powder they ought to try buffing it up occasionally......... Dennis Black
Hi JB, What modern track did Butch play?. I dont remember that. I enjoyied Butch's spot very much, I heard him mix it up with some 70's (Lovelites, ect) but can't remember any modern. From Dave Evo's spot through to Nige Brown's, I only heard 2 repeats, (sad to hear Ginger playing Time - Edwin Starr just after it had been played) but I did witness another of the Dj's stood at the side of the stage, paying attention for a couple of hours before his spot and he was noting what was being played, it was great to see some Dj's are trying and do care about not playing repeats. One thing I thought was interesting, this event seemed to be mainly attended by yorkshire / midlands folk. Sadly more evidence that the oldies / soul night scene in lancashire / manchester is dead??.. I loved every minute of it, dance comp was brilliant and that northern room is THE BEST. I prefered the modern room that was used last year and wasn't mad about the new room BUT the music was spot on. Well Done GoldSoul - Overall there is nothing better than this event!. Jayne.x the soul scene in manchester is not dead, seventy soulies from manchester were there i know because it was me who organised the tickets and the hotels, you should get down to the twisted wheel every month,or you could come along to our venue in denton manchester ,you would be most welcome there we tend to get 150 a month ,so please attend thanks.
