PM'd you Graham- Worst Soul Numberplate Ever ?
Think Chris Lemmon or his good lady has T4MLA and have seen an old Moggy 1000 with DEX 10 plate - now that is really cool !- Twisted Wheel, For Sale?
This has been running as a thread on the Twisted Wheel Forum for some weeks ( prob since beginning of December) - suggest you have a look on there - Soshe is monitoring planning applications on a regular basis and Pete Roberts has promised to let people know what's happening as he is obviously in touch with the guys who are currently leasing The Wheel, Monroes and the International. Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn.........................rumours abound so suggest you try the forum.- Chris Evans, Bbc Radio 2 Played Dean Parrish This Morning
Just listened to the Maconie - Waterman interview last night and if it's anything to go by he'll learn f**k all. Utter drivel - contrived- Too Darn Soulful at 10:00pm tonight should be a nightmare if the interview is anything to go by- News: No Tulips from Amsterdam, but a whole lot of soul - Lookback Nov 2011
Jos comes over to the Twisted Wheel Sunday sessions fairly often where the results of his editing jigery pokery are absolutely outstanding - as Dave said there is some fantastic footage from the sublime (Impressions) to the ridiculous ( Flaming Ember ) and a clip of a Head and Shoulders Shampoo ad with the Patti Young over the top that had some of speculating whether they were actually an item. I suppose somebody will tell me they were !- Nite Owl Leicester, dungeon And Beachcomber Nottingham
John - Malc Rowley from Langley Mill wishes to be remembered to you. I PM'd you the other day ! Rgds Graham Malley ( Derby) to read personal messages (PMs) go to top right of screen and you will see an envelope icon click on that and it should open your in-box- Nite Owl Leicester, dungeon And Beachcomber Nottingham

Timi Bleedin' Euro - It'll Never Be Over For Me - can't be too soon for me !- Which Northern Record Do You Want Played At Your Funeral?
Burning Sensation Give me just a little more time anything on Inferno !!!!!!! however on the serious side already pencilled in Amen Impressions I'm on my way to a better place Chairmen of the Board Silent Boatman - Parliament - if you don't know it try it ! (editted - sorry Soulboy just re-read earlier entries - forgotten you'd put up Robbie Lawson)- What Was The Last Bit Of Vinyl In Your Hand ?
The Sapphires - Gotta have your love in my left hand and Evil one in my right. Just aquired spanking HMV issues this afternoon and have just got them out of the car and waited for the good lady to settle down in front of the tele before slipping them onto the shelf. If challenged then the usual response would have been applied - oh these old things ! they've been in the wardrobe for ages !!!!- Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Third Window always reminds of the sort of songs the large female pig on the Pinky & Perky Show used to cover in the early 60s ! Anyway for me I find Timo Yuro IWNBOFM a real yawn - and how people can trot out Nine Times by the Moments is beyond comprehension - it's exactly the reason we used to travel out of town at week-ends to avoid having to listen to it ........... I'll get my coat- What's The Story? (The Duck)
I too have both issue and demo on Pye Inter with 'Cross my heart' on the b-side. However unlike Dave's die-cut centre mine are both solid centres. Is that what you were think about Ken ? (Not for one moment insinuating you can't tell a pye from pye inter). Pete - as an oracle on such matters which came first die-cut or solid or is just a different pressing plant ? thanks Graham- Plan B Checks Northern Soul At Glasto
I'm with you on this one Geese. Musically don't compare to some of the other 'modern' artists quoting similar influences e,g Meyer Hawthorne , Eli Paperboy Reed etc This lot are in the same category as Vintage Tosh or whatever they were called who appeared on the recent Imps concert in Manchester - all flash and no substance soul or music wise.- Tamla Motown Fan Club Us 45 1964
Right Dave - back again - info courtesy of Clive Richardson's 'Really Sayin Something - Memoirs of a Soul Survivor' Clive as I'm sure many of you are aware was an early member of TMAS, Editor of Shout and a contemporary of Dave Godin, Mike Raven and the other original supporters of soul music way back when. He refers to the disc but in doing so actually references the 2009 television documentary ' Motown - the British invasion' as revealing that 'just 300 copies were pressed' So really none the wiser from that angle - had hoped it was a more definitive statement as Clive obviously had access to the inner sanctum of TMAS. Anyone got a recording of the documentary - who actually makes the statement - does this provide an more definitive evidence ?- Tamla Motown Fan Club Us 45 1964
If I remember rightly Clive Richardson in his recent book quotes a number of 300 or 400 - will have a look later. I was worried the imminent re-press might devalue but hey ho 25p Dave's Surplus London Rd Derby still in pocket !!- Looking At Tomorrow-Issue-How Rare ?
Great lyrics from Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann - Mann released a fair rendition himself on Captol - but not as gutsy a performance as Bunny.- Best Soul Compilation
Thanks Dave - just testing !! - in fact strictly speaking 1 through to 6 because as you know 7 was JJ Jackson/Linda Jones and not strictly a compilation in the context of the thread if we're being pedantic. Think there were 3 Bell and 4 Stateside - also at least a couple of HMV Soul Sounds and a couple of Polydor and Marble Arch R&B and Soul offerings - all from the early days that were both an ecomical way of collecting and educational in expanding awareness of tracks not previously released in the UK. Just remembered Chess (besides the series mentioned above) and Pye Inter also weighed in with some quality packages. Too late to go rummaging round the record room. Graham- Best Soul Compilation
Then you have to consider the MINIT series (readily available in the big Woolies clearout ); Bell Cellar of Soul x3 ; The 3 or 4 Stateside offerings; This is Loma vols 1 - 8 , and almost forgot the 3 Keep the Faith's (Jay Boy/ President tailor made for the early 70s scene). All essential buys in the early collecting days along with Duke & the Peacock, Action Packed Soul- Parliament
Anybody got a UK issue they want to get rid of ? Found one but only VG was ideally looking for something in better condition pl PM me thanks Graham- Guy Hennigans Stafford Biggies,1987
I was lucky enough to be custodian of Guy's collection when he went to the States in the early 80s. He was based in Derby at the time and didn't want to leave them unattended in the flat. So I took them to my parent's place which was like Fort Knox. My reward was that I could tape them all on the agreement I would not make further copies. The result 16 C90s which I'v still got in a pastic brief case with track listings .........which I made using the cover up titles where applicable not the originals ......doh!!!!!!!!! Must get round to converting them to CD - although a lot of the titles are now household names. And no I won't be copying them ..........the agreement still stands.- Swingin Medallions
Just been on JMs site and seen the write up on 'She Drives me out of my mind' and 'Double shot' both of which are rated 'rarest of the UK Philips releases'. Not wishing to question his knowledge and standing but out of interest what do the rest of you rate as rarest UK Philips. As both have graced the shelves in record room since the Co-op in Derby got rid of it's stock mid 70s what value do you good folks reckon ? With regard UK Philips rarities I've only ever seen one Frankie & the Classicals- Soul Scene Villains
I should add the "allegedly" disclaimer being solely for legal reasons rather than suggesting submissions might be exaggerated. God help us if Shelly gets started on this thread following the Who Shot Who at Troggs. His memory for dodgy escapades is frightening. If he writes a book then if there's a hell below we're all gonna go !- Soul Scene Villains
Steve (and Russ) totally agree with your sentiments and can relate to some of the experiences referred to. You're right - most of the literature ignores the 'dark side ' that along with the music made the scene so exciting and appealing. Andy Wilson's academic work is probably the closest literary reflection of what was going on ( and why ) but of course it only scratches the surface as every town and village had it's very naughty boys ( and girls) !!! I suggest that most if not all submissions would also have to carry an ALLEGEDLY disclaimer. - Originals, Boots And Re-Issues For Sale
