  1. ..."A very unique voice and style; too many great records to list. Way ahead of his time in my view"... very very true... always loved this later track, which an edited version was on the flip of a Linda Clifford single...always makes me wonder if prince was influenced by the bass for "if I was your girlfriend"?
  2. Hi Robb, I thought "Grazing in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela was the original?
  3. ...the previous Janus and Marvin posts made me think of these two...
  4. ...fairly true to the original...but I like it as much...

there def illegal if sold, the main diff between a carver (or lathe cut records) and a traditional boot (also illegal ) is that its not pressed vinyl so initial outlay / production costs can be kept to a min, as theres no min run, you could get 1 ... and a pretty quick turnaround... selling them though, seems to be the basic model for the music industry, lets rip off the musicians...(the latest version of this is Spotify)... Lathe cut or carvers are really useful if your making music though, there are loads of great smaller scale lathe cut labels out there (albeit not soul) who are making fantastic hand made records...( hello Andy Votel..)
  6. ...found this, from How Britain Got the Blues: The Transmission and Reception of American Blues by Roberta Freund Schwartz on the web may be more info in the Dave Hibberd Book?
  7. well done...8 yrs later, but gets there in the end...gotta love this (site) ...is that a pic of an old bag you've come across? or is it from the web?...
  8. ...I see its in inverted commas, but sample's prob not the right word, wasn't until the mid 80's that samplers were available to most...not that backing tracks went reused / edited prior to then but this is most likely just re recorded going for the same feel...lot of talented folks in those recording studios... soz to be a terminology pedant...

..the Marva W Taylor - Nothing I'd Rather Be Than Your Weakness on forte is also canny...they got some milage out of the backing track at forte...(albeit diff recordings)...
  13. ...cafe royal books is such a fantastic publication...the recent deep blues edition of Val Wilmers photos is great too... £6 quid ish per issue is good value also...knocks the spots of yr usual £40 coffee table outings...
  14. ...also has another release on 20th century as Little Ralphie D, but not a great deal more info there...same production...
  15. ... I really like Mixcloud as there's such a huge amount on there from more mainstream internet stations ( NTS, WORLDWIDE) to just folk putting mixes up... Have enjoyed Mark Torkingtons mix's which he started during the big indoors...mainly slower tempo...but great listening non the less..

  24. the mounting system is the vitsoe shelving system which is still available and although pricey its amazing quality and stores records perfectly...its amazing how much loading it can take, giving that its all on simple steel pins..
