Chrissies Blog from 2007

From Heey Baby To Sospan Fach With Triplets And Jelly Babies
Posted by chrissie, 03 September 2007 ·
So it's Friday morning 31/08/07, I've thrown every possible item of clothes that any girl could need for a weekend away into a suit bag, loaded that into the van along with my lap top various bags of "stuff" that I "need" to take to North Wales on my regular visit to see the parents.
I am quite excited this time as not only is it the first time I have managed to coincide my monthly visit to Rhyl with a local soul night and Mark Speakman has kindly offered to give me a lift to Llandudno Football Club, to the first night of a new do but I am going to pick up my birthday present from Mark & Chico's shop. The family have clubbed together to buy me - "Heey Baby Days of Beach Music" book.
I set off about 10.15 and have arranged to call at Lou's (mrs soul) for a cuppa and a goss on the way up. I arrived at mid-day as anticipated, found the road where the house is but it's one of those posh cul-de-sacs that don't have numbers just a name so there I am trying to read the names on the doors of the houses when I here "Oi am here" in a black country accent, there is our own mrs s in her jim jams and woolly socks standing outside the house waving at me.
We have a cuppa and a good old natter, then she is rooting around amongst piles of vinyl saying "have you heard this" etc, then she shows me her new website that she is developing and I was impressed to say the least and well worth a vist, www.gingercatsoul.sampasite.com, but as she told me it is a work in progress and only in the development stages.
After only intending to stay an hour at the most I realise that I have been there over an hour and a half and really need to get on the road. So after ten minutes of good byes etc I am on my way up the A41 towards North Wales.
Now I am in a hurry, being a girl I have just decided that I don't want to wear any of the 27 zillion outfits I have packed to wear on Friday night and "must" get something new, and need to get to Rhyl before the shops shut.
This achieved and new frock bought I pull up in the van outside Funkyfeet Records to find Mark and Chico just shutting up shop. At this point I am on double yellows on the wrong side of the road, but I can't wait till Saturday to pick up my book. Quickly make arrangements for the evening.
Next stop is the nursing home to see my mother. She is suffering with severe dementure and has been in an home for nearly a year. It's a sad and horrible thing to see a parent go through this but sometimes you have to look at the funny things it brings out rather than concentrate on the bad stuff.
I haven't been to see mum for about 8 weeks, as I missed last months visit, and I am greeted with, "you've got a new bathing costume" totally puzzled at what she is talking about I look across to my Father who just shrugs is shoulders. Then it hit me what she meant. I had a v neck vest top under my shirt and she thought it was a swim suit. Then it starts, the dreaded conversation about the "triplets".
"How are the your babies?",
I reply, "I only have one mum, and he is 27 and has a baby of his own now"
"But who's looking after the triplets?" and so it goes on.
She is obsessed with the welfare of these triplets that are a figment of the place where the dementure takes her sometimes. The triplets were "born" early this year, and none of us can fathom where she got the notion from, but we all have to play along with it. Half an hour passes and I tell her I must be going as I have to cook dad's tea before I go out. A look of sheer horror crossed her face and I knew what was coming next, "Where are you going and what time will you be back?" so I told her, fibbing a little about my expected return time. Then off we go again "Who's looking after the triplets?" so I reassure her that my sister is babysitting and off I go home, eager to open the box which holds my precious birthday present.
As soon as I get to dad's house I open the box with the book in put one of the CDs on and within about 2 mins I was engrossed. Next thing I knew it was 7pm dad was home from visiting mum, I hadn't cooked him any tea and I needed to get ready to go out.
Mark picked me up about 8pm and we picked Chico and Pat up on the way. On arrival I spotted an eager asboannie, awaiting the presentation of her SS LAAS badge. So the formalities of the badge presentation over, it was down to the serious business of the evening, dancing, drinking and reminiscing about the old days in North Wales with Rich and a few others.
It was a good night and the music was spot on not going to go into the chin stroking stuff about who played what, cos I am rubbish at that and will probably get it all wrong. My honest opinion of the first night.................If it sticks to the same format with the same quality of music it will turn into a great regular well attended soul night.
Mark dropped me home about 2am, I pour myself a chilled glass of pinot and I have my usual perusal through the local paper and there looming up at me is an advert for the local theatre staring up from the page. MAX BOYCE IN CONCERT Sat 1st Sept. At 2.30am in the morning this seems like a good plan for my Saturday night, well it did at that time of the morning.
I do the usual stuff during the day, dad's shopping at Morrisons, (Why do elderly people have to shop on a Saturday.......CAN'T they do it during the week when we are all at work. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr) then back off to the nursing home to see mum, and her concern about the triplets is grows. She then voices concerns that its time my father got a proper job, he's 83, and she hopes he isn't going to marry the new cleaner. She then starts giggling and tells me that Clifford, one of the other residents, thinks he is her boyfriend and she doesn't think he is all there...................errrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I know to some it may seem a little callous that I laugh at some of her antics but if I didn't I don't think I could cope with it all.
Luckily my aging aunt and uncle then turn up to see her and I make my escape only after assuring her that I have not left the triplets on their own and they are safe and well.
Home, cook put dad's dinner in the oven and then the fatal mistake I picked up the book again.......next thing I know it's 6.50pm and I have to be at the theatre for 7.15, quick wash and change and walk up to the sea front to the theatre.
I am a little apprehensive about seeing Max Boyce as I don't want to ruin the memories of when I saw him 30 years ago and not sure whether his performance now will be as good.
After a quick vodka & coke in the bar, we take our seats. The warm up compare/comedian was above average for a seaside show and we thoroughly enjoyed him, though can't for the life of me remember his name. My sister then opens the Jelly Babies, my hand dives in, I am hoping that in the darkness of the theatre I may just be lucky enough to pick a balck or red one but alas, green and yellow, oh well better luck next time I think.
We are then treated to the warbling of a very average female singer from South Wales who managed to murder The Rose and Barcelona consecutively, she definitely should of stayed in the valleys and not bothered with the journey up to North Wales, but what did amuse me was that as she opened her mouth to sing her first song I noticed her tongue was blue...............I started to giggle only to get funny stares from the people in front of me. I later over hear her talking to a friend in the foyer telling them that she had eaten a blue M&M before she went on.............stupid bint!!!!!!!
Max Boyce came on stage to his signature tune Sospan Fach and I realised that my eyes were filling up with emotion, we have a word for this in welsh which does not translate in to English, "Hireath" basically it means longing or yearning. The performance did not disappoint and by the end my tears of Hireath had turned to laughter.
The mystery of the Jelly Babies was never solved, I must of eaten another 10 during the show and not once did I get a black or red one, I think my sister must of nicked them all, but how she could tell in the dark of the theatre remains a mystery, a long with origin of the imaginary triplets..........................

THE WILTON BALLROOM TO CLOSE FOR MAJOR REFURBISHMENT

WILTON ALLNIGHTER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th - THE LAST THIS YEAR.
The Wilton Ballroom which has provided a home for our allnighter, featuring soul music from all eras and genre for over 14 years non-stop, is to close for the remainder of the year.

Under new ownership, the venue is to receive much needed refurbishment and alteration, which is planned to start in October. This means our next allnighter on the 7th September will be the last this year, and our November 2nd allnighter unfortunately cancelled.

After a meeting with the new management team who are keen to retain the event, we are pleased to announce that the reopening of the ‘New Wilton Ballroom’ in early April 2008 will see the continuation of our much loved allnighters hopefully for many more years to come. Also during our meeting with the new management some exciting new possibilities were discussed for expanding and enhancing our allnighter.

Though a complete refurbishment of the existing building is planned don't worry, the raised dance area and sprung floor will be retained. However there will be all new furnishings, P.A. system, and extensions to the front and rear of the building, providing additional function rooms and a balcony. When completed, the new venue will provide us with more possibilities and facilities than ever before, so watch this space.

We hope this doesn't cause too much inconvenience to our regulars, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the years, soul fans, DJs, S.U.N. fanzine, and the many record dealers who have not only supported our events, but run our ads in their mailings.

The September date will not only be the last in 2007 but the last now for a little over 6 months, so let's make it a very special night and give the old place a good send off. This is the last time you will see the Wilton Ballroom in its present form.

We will kick off the "New Wilton" by celebrating our 15th anniversary with our much loved collectors' night, featuring DJs and collectors playing deck for deck, which we plan for early April 2008.

We'll keep you posted via the Wilton website (also to be refurbished) and the Soul Source forum as things progress, If you want the personal touch, send your email address to boxy1@btopenworld.com and we'll keep you updated.

Buys of 2007
Like Dave Rimmer (thanks for the idea Dave) i'm going to try and list what i buy each month, if anyone is even remotely interested. This is also a way of me keeping track. I'll stick some comments on each as well.
January 2007:
CeCe Rogers - Someday - Atlantic (1980s soul that i reckon is dancable and deserves a spin in a northern room)
Carol Fran - Any Day Love Walks In - Port Demo (another excellent mid-tempo dancer from Carol)
Maxine Brown - Put Yourself In My Place - Wand (first heard on Maxine's Kent LP years ago, brilliant)
Pretenders - Part Time Sweetheart - Port (don't get excited everybody, this one is Doo Wop)
Masters of Soul - My Face - Ovide (ok a bit of strange record, but there is something about it..)
Latons - Love Me - Port Demo (one more for the Port collection)
The Continentals - Fine Fine Frame - Port (most of the earlier Port are Doo Wop, but some could get away in an R&B spot)
The Gems - I Can't Help Myself/Can't You Take a Hint - Chess (bought for the flip side, first played to me by Tommo in the car after Stafford once, i think at the time he said it was The Crystals, probably trying to cover it up... Took a while to find)
The Steinways - You've been leading me on - Oliver (Loved this since the old Hinckley Leisure Centre days but never owned it. Well I do now...)
Freddie Scott - I'll be gone - Shout (potentially popular again?)
Jeffrey Osbourne - Don't you get so mad - A&M (Stafford 1983, played at a niter and brand new in the charts! How many times does that happen these days? Never heard it since... )
Freddie Scott - Are you lonely for me/Where were you - Shout (buying blind here, just to see if any more Freddie Scott's are any good, he seems to have done loads for Shout, i don't want to end up collecting another label though )
Lafayette & Le Sabres - Free Way/ Cure For Love - Port (another one for the collection)
Johnny Newbag - Sweet Things - Port Demo
that's all for now
Where I've Been Lately

Goin Out
November 4th 2006
The last niter i went to was Worcster Marrs Bar on 4th November (managing to keep up my one niter a month average). Absolutely brilliant! I've been a few times but this was the best of all, possibly the best niter of the year. Hoping to get to Keele next weekend and then i expect that will be it this year. Unless i get a passout for New Year's Eve...
January 27th 2007
Wolverhampton - Junction 11 allnighter. Failed to keep to one nighter a month, but will try to catch up this year. Junction 11 was great, a great venue and the right mix of oldies, current knowns and a few unknowns to keep me busy on ebay on Sunday. Mick H. always does a great spot and it was good to hear Joseph Webster again. Joan did the best spot for me over all with loads of uptempo R&B, especially the great Bonnie Brisker. Only the second time i'd heard Andy Dyson and he was superb. This is a great venue, excellent dance floor and well ventilated, although upstairs where the record bar was it was too hot and i couldn't spend long up there. Ronnie Walker was great, although i'm not a big fan of live acts especially without a band so i could have gone without the hour long interruption in the sounds. All in all, great and i'll definately go again.
February 11th 2007
Rugby Soul Club Alniter - Ben Hall. This is another classic venue, brilliant dance floor and huge hall. I've been to a couple of the soul nights here and this first niter still felt like an extended soul night, and to me that was a good thing. It was friendly, informal and if you wanted to dance all night you could, if you wanted to stand and chat in the record bar all night you could. It was a 'no pressure niter'. For the first time in i don't know how long i didn't dance at all (not a reflection on the music btw), i was able to have a few beers (cos Mark was driving) and i found plenty of people to talk to in the record bar. At the same time i could listen to the music next door, which was uniformly excellent and across the board as you'd expect. Picked up another nice Port 45 from Adam (see my blog) and had a great time. Unfortunately we had to come away about 4 as Mark was working the next day, but it was on a high just after Guy's spot so good stuff. Thanks to everyone involved. Next time i'll be in a dancing mood....
February 24th 2007
Bretby Conference Centre allnighter.
March
Connaught Hotel, Wolverhapton soul night.
May 5th 2007
Nuneaton Coop soul night and Worcester Marrs Bar allnighter.
June 2nd 2007
Rockingham, Chesterfield soul night (still just about managing somewhere each month... )
June 16th 2007
Souldham - Oldham. One of the most amazing venues i've ever seen. Reminded me a lot of the big hall at Hinckley Leisure Centre in the 80s, nice high balcony at the back overlooking the hall, very high ceiling giving the impression of almost a cathedral. This could be a great venue of the future, i'm amazed it's never been used before.
July 14th 2007
Middleton Civic Centre - Allniter. Absolutely superb niter. Brilliant venue, great crowd, excellent sounds all night, dancing all night as well. R&B room was excellent as well. Definately going again next time it's on.
August 5th 2007
Nuneaton Co-Op - Soul Night.
August 11th 2007
The Aquarius - Allniter
September 14th 2007
Nuneaton Co-op - Soul Night.
September 15th 2007
Middleton - Allniter
November 9th 2007
Rugby Soul Night
November 15th 2007
Warwick Soul Night
November 17th 2007
Middleton Allniter - Haven't really had a favourite permanent regular allniter since Stafford in the 80s. 3/3 now for Middleton and intending to keep it up. Brilliant niter which has everything for me, wide range of music, massive dancefloor and a huge record bar.
My Personal History
Posted by Matt Male, 10 December 2006 ·
The Past
1978 - Go up to secondary school and start becoming more interested in music generally. Start attending youth club disco at Alderman Smith school where the DJ, Dave Hall, plays a 'Northern Soul' spot amongst all the chart stuff. Turns out years later he was a regular at Wigan and was bringing this stuff back with him. Usual youth club faire, '9 times out of 10' 'If you loved me' (massive) 'On a magic carpet ride' 'Interplay' etc... but I'm hooked, especially as it seems to be a music which lads can dance too alone without looking idiots and even look cool. Start going to other local discos and notice on Friday nights at the local Labour Club a group of older lads and girls in soul bags and circle skirts carrying bags covered in patches. They all leave early. Later find out they are off to catch the train to somewhere called Wigan...
1980 - One of my mate's older sister is part of this group and she goes to Wigan regularly. I eventually persuade my parents to let me go with the older ones. We go with the older crowd but we don't really hang around with them. My first time at an allnighter, Wigan casino. I'm 14.... Go regularly until it closes. My last nighter at Wigan is the final Oldies allnighter 4th September 1981.
1982 - After Wigan closes we all wonder what next but we didn't have to wait long. Stafford, Leicester, Morcambe Pier, 100 Club, Bradford Queens Hall, Hinckley Leisure Centre... the 'glory years' to most people, me included. I was 16, exactly the right age to really enjoy myself. Wigan was always for the older crowd and I always felt like a gatecrasher, but now this was definitely 'our' scene. Most of the Nuneaton older crowd pack it in after Wigan but us young 'uns keep going...
1986 - I suddenly pack it all in. I never understood entirely why, I was still single, no mortgage, no kids etc.. Unfotunately drugs had started to become more important than the music, I was very thin, very paranoid and the scene had become quite dark and bitchy (mentioning no names). It just wasn't fun any more and I was also trying to hang on to a good job and got the impression that I wouldn't have it long after a weekend of gear and no sleep. I sell my records, throw away my memberships and my patches and flyer collection...
1987 - Somehow, and I'm not sure how this happened, I end up being persuaded to go to the Oddfellows niter in Leicester. I am thinking about getting back on the scene but it's a bad move. A bunch of local wannabe soulies from years back that we used to take the piss out of are now swaggering around like they own the place. We meet up with an ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, not good, and I crash my car on the way to the niter... At the niter I don't know a single record, it feels a bit weird, I don't dance and get thoroughly depressed. I leave early and get the bus home.
1988 - 1992 The wilderness years. I get into rock music and indie music and apply the same dedication with which I followed Northern, but there are no drugs and no allnighters. I keep my job, live a 'normal' life, I still occasionally see people off the scene but they are very much druggies first soulies second. Some people die, everyone else I know (with a couple of exceptions) packs it in, gets married, gets a mortgage and settles down. I buy a house but not married yet and no kids.
1993 - I'm at university in Kent and I start seeing adverts in local papers about Southeast Scooter clubs and scooter sales. I start buying Scooterist magazine and amazingly I discover there are still Northern Soul nights and allniters going on around the country (I shouldn't have been surprised really). When I'm home for the holidays from Uni I dig out some ancient tapes from 1982 and begin to listen again, they sound unbelievable and I can't understand why I packed it all in. I don't go anywhere though and just sit on my hands and live my memories for three more years.
1996 - I've finished university and I'm looking for a job. I move back to Nuneaton and my girlfriend moves down from Scotland to live with me. Things are pretty settled. Then one day I run into Mark Freeman in town on a Saturday. I've known Mark since we were eight and had seen him regularly around Nuneaton for years and obviously in the past at niters. He tells me he's still into Northern (always has been) and he runs a soul night at the Old Hall in Nuneaton, I should come along. Saturday evening comes. I don't know what to do, I'll be going on my own, do I really want to relive the past? I'm very nervous. The Old hall is only a short walk from where I live, so (unfortunately) it's no hardship getting there. No excuses. I decide to go. When I walk in I can't believe it. A huge wooden dance floor, northern blasting from the sound system, and dancers, the room is packed! Everyone I've ever known in Nuneaton on the scene is there, from old Wigan goers to ex-close friends from the Stafford days. Soon I'm mingling and chatting as if I've never lost touch. I know every record played and I dance to 70% (this time without the use of drugs, although it's obvious some people are still using). I'm back.
1997 - Things move rapidly now. Mark runs more soul nights in Nuneaton, The Crazy Horse is one venue, and I attend when I can. I go to my first niter in 11 years, Stoke Kings Hall. I know it has its faults but for anyone who's been away Stoke is a good starting point and like stepping back in time into Wigan and will hook anyway not on the scene for a while. I couldn't believe how many records I knew. Probably 90%, but I was also puzzled. How come I didn't know a single sound at Leicester in '87 but now I know them all? The answer of course was that Stoke was an oldies niter and everything played was probably discovered pre-1986. It seemed like Stafford and Leicester had never existed, but I still wanted to hear those sounds too again. I start going other places and discover the scene has indeed moved on (thank God) and the rest, I suppose (as they say) is history...
1997 - 2006 Still going strong(ish), slowed down a bit now to maybe one niter a month and occasional soul nights now I have two kids under 5, collecting again as much as I can afford to, always trying to listen to new stuff (especially things I missed on my time out). I suppose I might be frowned upon as a dirty 'returnee', by some people but I'm older, wiser, and I don't give a toss these days. This is the greatest dance music ever created and every time I take to the floor it feels like the first time 28 years ago. I'll never leave again...

Nuneaton Soul
Posted by Matt Male, 14 June 2007
The Present
In a few weeks time i'm starting to create a website about the history, music, venues, life and times of rare and northern soul in Nuneaton. I've always considered Nuneaton a very soulful place, especially when i was growing up and thought it would be nice to document the soulful history of the town as well as bring everything up to date with what's going on these days and also mentioning Nuneaton's contribution to soul nationally.
Like i say this will begin in a few weeks time (coinciding with my summer holidays ).

Buys of 2007
May 2007:
Another embarrassing month record-wise. Had to pay out 2k for the bathroom last month so i'm a bit skint, plus it's hard to justify buying records to my wife when we are slightly short of cash. I see supercorsa has kept up with his records of 2007 and buys, so i will oblige and do the same. It doesn't make extensive reading as you can see...
Donny Mann - The Girl Next Door - UNI (popular Rocket sound)
Sister Sledge - Cream of the Crop - Cotillion (Mark Freeman recommendation)
The Voice Box - I Want It Back (Your Love) - Loma (Excellent rarely played Wigan sound)
That's all folks. I'm determined to do at least 4 next month...

April 2007:
Ok i said i'd do this all year... and i will.
Unfortunately this month it's a bit embarrassing. Only three 45s bought. We've got to fork out about three grand for a new bathroom at the start of May, so not a good time for buying records. Anyway, here's this months...
Freddy Scott - Are you lonely for me - Shout
Freddy Scott - Cry to me - Shout
Freddie Scott - I'll be gone - Shout
Marrs Bar on Saturday so i'll take some money with me... who knows eh?

Getting Out More This Year... Fat Chance!
Posted by Matt Male, 16 January 2007 ·
Goin Out
I seem to be finding it harder and harder to motivate myself to go out to niters and soul nights. I never did that many anyway. In the last month i intended to go to The Wilton and Halfway Soul Club which is just up the road from me travel-wise, but didn't make it to either. Part of the problem is i hate going anywhere on my own. There are always plenty of people to hang about with when i get there, but it's the getting there that seems a pain in the arse.
My usual companion, Mark Freeman, hasn't been able to make the last couple i fancied and when it got to Saturday night i just seemed to talk myself out of it after looking forward to it all week...
It two weeks time i was looking forward to middleton, then Mark suggested Studio 1, but now that's been cancelled and i also promised my wife i'd go to her mate's birthday party with her.
I promised myself i'd try and make at least one nighter a month this year... but the way things are going i'm not going to make it. I suppose i'll just have to do two next month.

Irish Pip belatedly added to Jack's 6TS nighter due to malfunctioning of....

Latest 6ts News inc 18 Aug Event and Anniversary Ticket News
Irish Pip belatedly added to Jack's 6TS nighter due to malfunctioning of promoter.
The DJing sensation of the last Cleethorpes weekender (no pressure there then Pip!) has just reminded me I booked him for next Saturday (18th Aug) nighter at Jack's and like the weevil I am, forgot to put him on the flyer.
He's trecking across the sea so this article should put that right and emphasise what a stunning line up of DJs it will be.
Butch, Keith Money, Ady Croasdell, Adam Torel, Warren Boogaloo and Pip.
Also don't forget that ickets for the 28th all nighter (Sept 22nd at the 100 Club) go on sale on the night.

Jack's 6TS nighter still on Aug 18th!

Johnny G, Jack's manager, just rang me to say there were rumours at Stoke this weekend that the next Jack's nighter had been cancelled. Not at all, it's never been in doubt.
Butch, Mick Smith, Keith Money, Warren Boogaloo, Adam Torel and I will be playing some superlative soul sounds from 10pm-7am.
The rumour probably started because the R&B nighter Hard As Nails that I have nothing to do with has cancelled all their future nights at the venue.
See y'all on the 18th when 6TS 28th anniversary tickets for the 100 Club nighter on Sept 22nd go on sale. Ady

Smokey Robinson UK Tour - Symphony Hall Birmingham

Smokey Robinson Live at the Birmingham Symphony Hall by Brian Ellis
I must admit to deliberately not going to see many live soul acts as I'm often disappointed as more often than not the artists are never really able to match (or better) their original recording. However since there was the chance (maybe last chance) of seeing a live performance in the UK by a giant and absolute icon of soul music, my wife and I attended the Birmingham Symphony Hall to see Smokey Robinson on Friday night (29 June).
Show commenced at 7.30pm with a warm up act - a 'comedian' (I use the term cautiously) who was utterly attrocious, straining to raise even a titter from the audience (where's Bernard Manning when you need him!!). He was on for half an hour, then there was a further half hour wait with some background music playing.
The backing band, singers and strings section came on to the stage, accompanied by two female dancers who adopted a pose centre stage; the orchestra commenced playing, then rapidly moving into the opening bars of 'Going to a Go Go' and sliding in slowly from unlit left stage, dressed in a black three-quarter length coat, black shirt and black trousers was the unmistakable figure of Smokey, breaking quickly into the first lines of the song. Hairs on the back of the neck moment!! He proceeded into a medley of Temptations tracks ('The way you do the things you do', 'Get Ready', My Girl etc) to rapturous applause. Then went in to 'Baby, Baby' which was stunning - bringing out the best applause of the night and a standing ovation - more hairs on the neck.
He sang a number of other songs before moving off stage for a change of clothes and for the stage to be re-arranged. At this point a projector screen descended from the roof and an advertisement started to play with Smokey giving a very sugary commentary ('I love love, because love is timeless') to promote his latest CD. All a bit too sickly and 'American' for me.
This was the cue for the lights to rise and for us to see the stage re-arranged with a more intimate set up - a four piece jazz quartet arrangement, Smokey emerging newly attired in a dark suit, shirt and red tie. He launched in to his first number of his second set - a jazzy rendition of 'Fly me to the moon' (OMG - what's going on here?); this was quickly followed by other 'Andy Williams type arrangements' and me quickly losing a good bit of interest - but hanging on in there, as right before my eyes was an icon and a hero. Not sure how long this went on for (maybe 5 or 6 numbers) - whatever it was, was far too long for me.
This led to another break while the stage was re-arranged to its original format; Smokey re-emerged in a shirt and silver trousers. 'Being with you' and 'Just to see her' alongside 'Tears of a Clown' pushed the show back on to full power. He then brought forward Marv Tarplin to front stage - looking totally cool, relaxed and taking it all in his stride - everything went quiet and the opening guitar riff to 'Tracks of My Tears' started to leak from Marv's magical fingers - more hairs and the applause exploded. Smokey finished his performance and went off stage to a standing ovation and the inevitable 'More', More', 'More'.
He re-emerged and sang 'Cruising' - great stuff. Then for his finale he 'split' the audience down the middle and started a contest as to which side of the audience could sing best the chorus to 'Cruising'. FFS - the show had plummeted to the standard of a third rate Hi-de-Hi holiday camp concert. This was such a disappointing end.
To sum up my views - this was a bit of a 'curates egg' performance, good in parts (no, actually great in parts) but poor in other parts (no, actually dreadful in other parts). It really puzzles me why such a giant had to descend to such an amateurish ending and also why he had to resort to singing other people's songs when he has such a massive repertoire of his own material, that would have brought the house down.
Did I enjoy it - overall yes; would I have missed it - definitely not; would I spend £90 on seeing the show again - no. Smokey, despite being 67 years old, has lost nothing of his voice- and he still looks great (although the jury's out on the silver trousers which tended to show that his waistline isn't quite as svelt as it was). He gave us a solid 2 hours of his talent. He still remains a hero, icon and giant - I just wish the two elements of the show I've negatively commented on hadn't been included.
I guess that many other Soul Sourcers might have been to one of his UK performances and wondered what they thought of the shows?

100 Club 7/7/07

Due to computers being really mean and nasty to me and the odd crisis or three, I’ve not been able to do a proper mail-out or even get the new memberships sorted properly. Rest assured you’ll all get in tonight, the memberships are optional now anyway with the new licensing laws and you don’t really need them. The new membership cards will be on the door to be picked up. We’ve got a great DJ line up tonight featuring Butch, Mick Smith, John Weston, Mick H, Paul McKay and myself. As a rough guide, we’ll be playing club soul and well known stuff up to 1 am and the rarer dog’s bollocks after that through till 6 am. Don’t forget you can legally drink now right through to 5 am; so pace yourselves! Ady

SOUL BEACH PARTY, BOURNEMOUTH JUNE 30TH 2007 - EVENT REVIEW BY Rich Chorley

What a night! Thunderstorms and rain all day and right through this nine hour long knees up under the stars, in a rickety old dance lounge overlooking the sea on Bournemouth Beach! There was supposed to be a balcony buffet frrom 8-midnight but it was blasting down and the spray from the waves was breaking over the building at times! As the roof of the 1937 built Rowing Club leaked generously onto dancers, there was an electric atmosphere and the DJ'S played to a busy floor for most of the night.

This was an r+b free zone due to the tastes of the DJ's on offer and it was indeed so refreshing to attend a night that reminded us just how great 6T's and 70's soul classics can sound when they are played back-to-back and without reference to what a lot of the people who attended this event call 'rock and bloody roll records!' Dave Greet played two superb sets, combining modern and northern classics with ease and he was ably supported by Jason and Martin from Bournemouth, Guy Cooch and Pete Widd who all played sets brimming with quality and taste. It was my privilege to do the ' Midnight Motown Hour' and what a thrill to see a floor full of people grooving to some of the greatest records ever cut to vinyl!
On the whole, the atmosphere was pretty electric throughout and although it was a shame that the balcony could not be utilised due to the horrendous weather, the setting right next to the seashore added to the character and everybody got right into the swing of things and helped create a truly memorable night. This was a gathering of old friends and so many faces showed up from the 70's that it would be unfair to mention anyone in particular. The organisers would simply like to thank all of you for helping us stage a great Soul Night, in a great venue with a great atmosphere. The second Rowing Club Beach Party of the year will be on Sat August 18th and we look forward to welcoming you back for another soulful shindig by the sea!

The Glades Kidderminster - 10th February '07
Posted by WorcSoulSurvivor, 06 February 2007
As expected Another great nite by the Kiddy Boys, although they messed up with the bar and venue times, so it finished at 12 rather than 12:30. Started off quite quiet then filled up quick. Boasting Northern Stompers, with the inclusion of well blended modern, the end of the night bought the fast pasers, with songs such as Bob Brady, Curtis Mayfield and ofcourse Human Beinz. Finishing off with
Tobi Ledgend's - Time Will Pass you By, all brilliant sets by Francis, Baz and Steve Russell.
If you missed this one then make a date for the Next one!!

First night at the aquarius and there were a few disapointments, the bar queue was WAY too long!
However, the music was pretty good, a few too many slow ones and repeated ones, but on the
whole it was a good night. They want to get it sorted for next month or they will loose their reputation!

First time I've ever been to Torquay and I have to say it was GREAT! The Hotel itself caters for the event very well, with a large amount of ammenities...and bars! The rooms are of high standard, although we moreless through our cases in and off we went . The two lounges, one northern one modern, played the best of genres, and the dancefloors allowed easy use....and easy feet. Breakfast was extended to 10:15am so that we could have at best three hours of sleep. All DJ's were at there best, listening to the dancers and slowing the pase when needed! The weekend finished on a high, although we wish we had booked till the sunday....to give a better drive home and a good nights sleep!!!
Definitley one the best weekenders goin.....Next is ofcourse octobers Prestatyn for me

Problems with the sound system in the Northern Room did play up the sounds just got better and better. Auction of Dave Godin related soul items to raise funds for a memorial tree and plaque

Just had news of Dave Godin related items on auction on ebay, the full info on this auction is further below.
The worthwhile aim is to raise funds for a "Memorial tree & plaque to Dave and/or (depending on how much we raise) an all-night soul Party in Dave's memory". Link to the list of all the items is below and as its ending very shortly if you wish to get involved then need to get over to ebay and bid as soon as you can

I'm writing to let you know there's several items formerly belonging to
Dave godin (a close friend of mine), for sale on ebay. Some items only have
a day or so left, others 3 & 4 days. Items for sale include original
signed/inscribed photo's of Marvin Gaye, Screamin Jay hawkins (Jalacy),
Doris Troy, Barbara Lynn, a signed Irma Thomas T-shirt, a selection of Soul
Music related books all signed to Dave by author and a few original sew-on
Soul-club badges - Wigan Casino etc. These things were originally intended
for an archive which now cannot happen due to another party refusing to
hand over the bulk of materials left for that purpose. We've decided the
next best option is to make them available to others for their own private
archives and use the funds raised to pay for a Memorial tree & plaque to
Dave and/or (depending on how much we raise) an all-night soul Party in
Dave's memory.

Roots Of Rhythm Blog
Posted by NASHEE, 30 June 2007
ROOTS OF RHYTHM....23rd June 2007
The Roots of Rhythm event, was billed, rightly so, as UNMISSABLE....and bugger me...thats exactly what it was.
The Journey to the event for us started at 9am on Saturday morning. Bob Morrris picked us up and whisked us off via the m6...m5, to Merv's home. As per usual the hospitality offered by Merv & Shell was second to none. Jodie and Micky were already there, records were spinning, and we were made very much at home.
The mini bus was soon loaded...and the second leg of our journey began.
We arrived at The Market House, Western Super Mare around 1pm, and the party was soon in full swing.
The small back room, set aside for the afternoon bash (record fair & vinyl fest) was soon rockin' as dj's played their tunes, and plied their wares....Double decking seemed to be the name of the game during the afternoon sesh..Merv and Leon, Paul & Jason, Ted, Bob, Jodie & Kev all took their turn and I had the honour of doing a spot alongside Roger Banks.
There was a feeling in the air, I can't put into words...but we all smiled knowingly at each other...this was going to be a very special time for us.
More and more people arrived as the day turned to night, the back room closed its doors and we started the party proper in the front room....with its clean lines and walls decked out with musical memorobillia..we couldn't in our wildest dreams have hoped for better.
The Dj's waited patiently for their allotted spot...All 13 of them. No snobbery or one upmanship here, each one bravely experimenting with new sounds, styles and genres...only possible because of the truly open minded punters that were in attendance...so great were there numbers at one point, that the back room reopened...such was the volume of folk. The place was absolutely rocking.
The one aspect of the night that will always stick in my mind...In the whole 16hrs...Not one negative comment was uttered...NOT ONE !!!!
A special thank you must go to Martin...the Landlord extrordinaire...He wined us...dined us and gave us a bed to recover in....and all the time...he kept thanking US....What a guy !!
I bow to all those involved...This night will live in my memory till the day I die.
Linda.

I Have An Alien In My Chest Trying To Get Out
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 13 June 2007 ·
At least that's what my post Cleethorpes cough feels like !!!!
Oh yeah, my knees still hurt like hell as well. Mind you, I suppose that's what you get for crawling up a dancefloor playing British Bulldog when you're 48 years old.
Apart from those two minor problems Cleethorpes was great.
We arrived around 1pm on the Friday afternoon and as Ady hadn't arrived made our way straight to the bar, as you do, a series of people joined us and quite a few beers were consumed. Now you'd possibly think that my consumption of said beers was responsible for the confusion when I tried to book in. No, it was all Sharon's fault !
Now she's a lovely girl, but somehow managed to confuse me with Dean Anderson. I'm sure Dean won't mind me saying this, but there are several essential differences between him and me. Firstly, I'm much younger looking, and the handsome one, but somewhat more critically, if it came it a Police ID parade, I think most people would notice the fact that Dean is Black, and I'm not !!! Having talked at cross purposes for sevearl minutes we established that Sharon wasn't really confusing me with Dean at all, she was confusing me with Dougie (On the basis that we both had beards, mind you I'm definately the younger and better looking one in this comparison !!!) who was sharing a caravan with Dean. That sorted I wandered off back to the bar with the wristbands in my possession.
We were in the same caravan as last year, no problems there, except the telly had gone missing since last year. Woody and Lou were next door, same as last year, and they didn't have a telly either. They also didn't have a cooker, table, chairs, and bedding, but we were ok.
Friday night started on time and I soon realised that most of my mates were here, and up for a good weekend, that's what it's all about though. Around half past ten I caught a glimpse of Lou adding to her collection of photos for the Dolce and Gabanna thread, Hoss, with his trousers round his ankles ! Lindsey and Karen (Soulgirl) arrived to say hello, and Lindsey stated categorically that she wouldn't sit with us again because she didn't think her liver could stand the damage after Prestatyn.
No Keith Money because he was fogged in on the rig in the North Sea, and it didn't get much better for Keith and Sandra either. Both of them were quite ill over the weekend, Sandra particularly, so I hope you're both feeling better now.
As usual I had the last DJ spot of the night, but as Ady took the decision to end the Friday at six am, it's a much better spot because there are still quite a lot of people there who are not just members of the living dead that don't sleep at all, so I really enjoyed that. Allegedly, I announced that it was Denise from Rugby's fiftieth Birthday, which made it even more satisfying when someone said "Never mind love, there's loads of us that age here", and someone else said "You look really good for fifty". She was only thirty nine.
Off to bed straight after.
Saturday afternoon: Again, everything started on time. I must admit I only paid attention to two spots, Jessica from New York, who played a real mixture of things, and Mark Speakman, who played an absolutely top spot and to be honest it was the best spot I heard all weekend. Well played mate.
I spent most of the afternoon chatting to Jessica who now lives in South Wales on a smallholding. Her husband still works in London during the week so she's only got the animals for company. That might possibly explain why she said she dreamt of her chickens on the Friday night ! To be fair, our conversation wandered from one topic to another: photography, records, castrating lambs, you know how it goes.......
Saturday night. First spot of the night for me. Well it would have been if the sound guys had got their act together. The artist sound check wasn't completed until fifty minutes after it should have been, and as my spot was only forty five minutes............ Ah well, such is life. I know that people had come to see the live acts not me DJ so had no problem with misisng my spot. Thanks must go to the four mates of mine, you know who you are, who all individually said it was the best spot they had ever heard me play.
Onto the live acts. What can I say (Apart from the fact that during the first number by The Apollas the feedback was appalling, just what were those sound guys doing ????). Great show from the ladies, and HB Barnum showed that he could have easily made his living as a singer rather than choosing to go down the path of writer, producer, arranger, musical director.

Sian and Denise arrived just as the bar shut. Sian had been ready since 10 pm, so was so hyper it was funny watching her bobbing about, although I was rather concerned when she started biting Denise to try and curb her excitement.

There was also a certain about of amusement from seeing a rather drunk demi God of the scene making a complete fool of himself by using obscenities over the mic, but such is life. if you can't hold your beer, don't drink it.
I lasted till about five thirty am, and then decided I was off to bed.
Sunday afternoon, and it's quiz time. Roger Banks and I spend quite a lot of time compiling the questions for the quiz, at least half an hour each, and we thought it was fairly easy this year, it appears from the answers we got back that it wasn't.
I'm going to use Sean Chapman as an example here. One of the questions was: "How many price guides has John Manship published ?", The correct answer was five. Four editions of the US price guide and one edition of the UK price guide.
Sean, bless his little cotton socks, put four. On his record stall guess what he had for sale.........Edition 4 of the US guide, and the UK price guide !!!!

Quiz done, it was off to get something to eat and get ready for the Sunday night. First spot again, sharing it with Roger Banks. Roger and I always have a great laugh when DJing together because we have similar tastes in music, so can make the spot flow which is quite hard to do when you are sharing a spot. But we also have a similar sense of humour, so if Ady is reading this, he will now discover why the stage was full of junk ! We managed to drag all the game show things, wheel of fortune, take the money, tombola, even a large wet paint sign, and a couple of music stands onto the stage, just to fill it up. I noticed later on that they had all been removed, but have no idea who did it. So now you know Ady, Roger and I put it all there.
We carried on DJing for a couple of hours because in the usual well organised Sunday night nobody else turned up. Then it was time to have a drink.
I'd like to thank the idiot that thought up British Bulldog. I've had real trouble walking because of the pain in my knees caused by crawling up the dancefloor. My own fault though, no excuses. H B Barnum showed what a wonderful sense of humour he had by taking part in what must have seeemd totally surreal to him. Well done, and another round of applause for the man. Still I hope everyone enjoyed it, and it was nice for Keith Money to walk away the winner, at least something went right for him.
It was actually Denise's birthday on the Monday, so it was pressies and cake for her as well. Hope you had a good 'un.
All I have left to do now is thank the people whose company made this probably one of the best weekenders ever at Cleethorpes. I'm not going to give any names because I'll only miss someone out, except for my wife Margie, Woody and Lou, John Weston, Sian and Denise, who all made me laugh over the weekend till it hurt.

Couldn't have done it better.
Imagine the scene. You're sitting in your steel, chrome and black glass office, as the leading architect for the top firm in the country, when in walks this guy.
He says I want you to design a Northern Soul venue. It's got to have a big stage at one end, a big dancefloor with table round the edge, a bar area at the back, and then I want another bar area where the record dealers can set up.
So, you set your team of young, trendy designers to work. A fortnight later the guy comes back and says "Forget that job to design the perfect Northern Soul Venue. I've just found it, and Kent Soul Club run it every two months !"
I have to say this is one of the best venues I have come across for the smaller club nights (And by smaller I mean 150 people rather than 600), it really is that good. When you couple the venue with a top notch sound system, a gang of really enthusiastic local DJs, who have none of the ego problems I've seen in the Midlands for instance, and a friendly crowd who are well up for it, you know you are onto a winner.
Despite the four hour train journey each way it was a privelege to go down and DJ at Kent Soul club last night, and I can honestly recommend the place to anyone within traveling distance. As I've already said, the people were friendly, the beer was good (although proper 'Suvvern' prices ) and it was nice to put faces to several more Soul Sourcers.
The job's a good 'un !
Sleepless Nights

I left home at 5am Saturday, and arrived back at 10am Sunday. In between I had a really great time in Dublin.
As we can add piccies to the Blogs now, here's a few of the SS members out enjoying themselves !

Ooh Ah Ooh Ah
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 15 April 2007
Taken from Sam cooke's 'Chain Gang', you know the bit, at the beginning when you can hear all the clanking and banging and the male backing singers go "Ooh Ah Ooh Ah", and then Sam starts singing "That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang".
Well that's what the inside of my head felt like this morning ! The reason being the bitter was only £1 a pint at Keele allnighter. At that price it would be rude not to have a few beers wouldn't it.
The night started with some fun from Jenny Banks who we discovered is scared of wasps. In a doomed attempt to kill the poor little blighter she covered everyone but the wasp in hairspray, mind you, I'm sure you could hear it coughing slightly. so we went from having a wasp flying around minding it's own business, to having a very pissed off wasp flying round looking to dig it's sting into someone. Well done Jen
Eventually Lou wacked it one with a record sleeve and I trod on the little bugger, so that ended his first allnighter.
Shame for him really because it was a good night. A nice mixture of music from all the DJs resulted in the dancefloor being full all night, and although the numbers were down from the last Keele, there were still enough people to generate a good atmosphere. I've always liked the venue anyway, and a good night was had by all.
Here's the playlist from my spot between 5am and 6am.

Valentinos - Sweeter Than The Day Before - Chess
Fabulous Peps - With These Eyes - Wee 3
Satisfactions - Take It Or Leave It - Smash

Isn't The Telly On A Saturday Crap !
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 08 April 2007
Well I haven't been out at all this weekend, and it's the first Saturday when I've been at home since August last year. Hence I've never taken much notice of what's on the telly. I realised that I wasn't missing much at all, it was terrible. Bearing in mind that we have the full Sky package as well, so have probably nearly 200 channels to choose from, and I couldn't find anything worth watching, even the shows on the BBC4 Soul Weekender were all repeats !
Never mind, the mighty, mighty Wanderers won away from home at Wigan, so that cheered my day. Shame really because I don't want to see any Northern Club relegated and this defeat pushed Wigan closer to the drop. Well done to West Ham as well, superb win at the Emirates Stadium, which not only helped their own relegation worries, but also brought us three points closer to nicking the fourth spot from the Arsenal. The seasons not over yet Simsy !
Never mind, I'll make up for the lack of Soul over the next two weekends. I'm DJing at Leabrooks and Keele next weekend, and the weekend after DJing at Goodyears and then off to Dublin for Sleepless Nights 5th Anniversary.
Soccer, Basketball, Cricket, Snooker ?

No that's it ! It was Rugby last night !!!
No blog last week because I was DJing in Germany for the weekend (Check out the Event Feedback section for the Baltic Soul Weekender) but I'm back on the case today.
I've always enjoyed Rugby Soul Club, right from the beginning when Sian & Dean asked me if I'd like to DJ at their new Soul night. I've watched them struggle with low numbers through the first year or so, but it didn't put them off, they continued to book a good mixture of quality DJs who would play quality music, from Oldies, to unknowns, R & B, to Modern. Something for everyone.
Sian & Dean always make it a night to remember because they, and the bunch of assorted loonies that assist them, give the club a family feeling in the way that everyone is included in the fun and games.
With a mixture of guilt, and delight that it was a resounding success, I managed to get a booking in Italy the night of their first allnighter, so I missed the night when the club truly came of age. Everyone I have spoken to has had nothing but praise for that night, and I missed it !
So we all knew it was going to be a hard act to follow with a Soul night. Numbers were down from the niter, and down on previous Soul nights, but that didn't stop it being a great night. In fact as the numbers thinned out as people went onto the Wolverhampton niter it didn't really seem to matter. The ones who remained were still having a great time on the dancefloor and in the foyer. In fact I thought it was a mark of respect that so many people came to Rugby before going onto Wolverhampton, because that started at 8pm as well.
(At this point I should mention the Freestyle Room as well. I never seem to get in there, I'm either DJing or selling records, but I'm told Catriona played an outstanding spot, and Back Door Kenny had the room full with his second spot. Well done guys)
I did two spots, the first one was just an out and out stomping Oldies rip up. I generally play this sort of spot at this time of night because it gets the dancefloor moving, but it's always the second spot that I enjoy doing more. I basically play what I want, and people dance. Much like the 100 Club, I can play a record for the first time at Rugby and the dancefloor stays busy. That's a great thing for a DJ to have, and I've tried out lots of new records at Rugby that have gone onto become regular plays in my set.
I played my usual game with the two doormen, they came and told me to finish at 2am on the dot at about 1.55am. I'd already turned my watch back five minutes, so we agreed on another three records. The lights came on towards the end of the third one, and the floor just danced on. That's always going to be my abiding memory of Rugby, people still dancing with the lights on !! When the nights first started I was still playing records at 2.15am till they got wise to me.
I pushed my luck and put 'The Drifter' on very quietly as people were (supposed to be) leaving. Shouts of turn it up from a still half full dancefloor led me to strike a deal with the dancers. I'll turn it up if you all leave quickly when it ends. It worked as well. By the time I had closed my DJ box and walked off the stage there were only about twenty people still left in the room. (They had all just moved into the foyer, but that's a different matter, and not my fault !!!)
I don't know if the two regular Security guys will read this, but I have to say you are probably the best security I have ever seen working a venue. You are always around, but not intimidating people, you do your job and clear the room, politely, at the end of the night, and are friendly to everyone. Even to the point of getting to know regulars by name. So I promise I'll finish, almost on time next time. Cheers guys !

I Am Just Going Outside, And May Be Some Time
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 20 March 2007 ·
Waking on the morning of March 17, 1912, Oates left the tent, stepping out into the blizzard with the memorable words "I am just going outside and may be some time." It was his 32nd birthday. His body has never been found.
Waking on the morning of March 17, 2007, Weston left the chalet, stepping out into the blizzard with the memorable words "I am just going to the pub and may be some time." It wasn't his Birthday, and we found him in the pub later.
I'm not saying the weather was bad this year, but the wind was blowing the great big wheelie bins round the site like dodgem cars.
But what a weekend ! For a variety of reasons, mostly because of my wife's lack of holidays from work, I found myself sharing a chalet with John Weston, Woody, and John Mills, which basically meant that not a single piece of food entered the fridge all weekend. We arrived on the Thursday afternoon all bright eyed and bushy tailed, and left on the Monday moning as shattered hulks of the men we once were ! God knows what happened in between to cause this serious deteriation in the physical health of four men.
Oh I remember, it was a weekender ! A bloody good one as well.
I suppose I'd better start at the beginning. So first of all I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to Dawn, who was our Chalet cleaner. the darling girl, who we never met to thank personally, had realised there was some electric left on the meter, so had put the heating on before we arrived. Instead of entering a shed with sub arctic temparatures we entered a modestly warm, luxurious shed.
However, that said, it was still a little boring, so having drunk the cans of lager Woody had brought we decided the best thing we could do was go and have a beer. Between the chalet and the bar I managed to completely lose John Weston and Woody. I thought he's started already ! How can he disappear in a walk of a few hundred yards ? I eventually found both John and Woody ensconced in the pub in solitary splendour ! Once I'd persuaded them sitting at the table nearest the outside door wasn't the best choice we got down to the serious business of the evening and had a few beers. Roger and Jenny Banks joined us shortly and we caught up with a few tales of derring do on the Northern Soul Scene. Much to Roger's delight Dee Dee Sharp was sitting at the table behind us. It didn't take long for him to engage her in conversation, and it didn't take Dee Dee Sharp long, under two minutes, to say to Roger "You are a bad man". We just howled with laughter because we knew she'd sussed him as a wind up merchant straight away. Well done that girl.
Moving onto the main room a bit later I was staggered to find what must have been getting on for 800 people in the place. It was on the Thursday night when the autograph hunters started as well. I'll explain: I'm DJing at the Baltic Soul weekender next weekend, and had received an email from the promoters, which must have gone out to all the live acts and DJs asking if they could sort out arrangements for autograph signing and interviews. Rob Wigley had also received the email and I was discussing it with Rob when John Poole overheard the conversation. John being John, thought it would be funny if he could set up people all weekend to come and ask for my autograph. If I was asked once, I must have been asked over a hundred times at Prestatyn for my autograph.
Having decided to take it steady on the Thursday night, Woody and I headed back to the Chalet at 3.30am. Now I'm not saying Woody snores, but Lou his wife has my sympathy ! It was like trying to sleep in a room with a train passing through it every thirty seconds. In the end I gave up trying to sleep in the bedroom and went to have a cup of tea. Eventually Mr Weston woke me up about 7am by knocking on the door.
The conversation went something like this:
"Why didn't you use your key ?"
"What key ?"
"The key I f*cking gave you when we came back"
"You didn't give me a key"
"Yes I did"
"You didn't"
"I DID !"
"You didn't"
"Empty your pockets", at which points he dumps the contents of his pockets on the table.
"Oh, sorry"
I waited until he fell asleep, turned the TV on full blast and left to have some breakfast in the restaurant with a happy smile on my face.
Passed three empty Police cars on the way and wondered who had had their weekend plans spoiled ? I was right as well, there were two arrests made on the Friday morning. So the Police had been planning that one for a few weeks because they knew which chalet to go to !
I went back to the chalet about 11am to find John still asleep, so I turned the telly back on and went to the toilet. He mustn't have realised I was in there, so he turned the telly off and got back into bed, so I turned it back on when I came out of the toilet. Petty ? Childish ? Oh yes, but revenge is so sweet !
Setting the sales stall up next to Roger Banks we both commented on how few stalls there were this year compared to last (Probably because the price of stalls this year went up to £100 each), and how many T-Shirt, clocks, cufflinks, lighters, mouse mats (!), birthday cards, and general market stalls there were. Certainly as many selling tat as there were selling records. I had a plan to join in but was foiled by the lack of a decent shop in Prestatyn. The idea was to buy a pack of plain white T-Shirts and a marker pen and then put our newly designed T-Shirts up for sale boldly emblazoned with the slogans:
Kepe The Faith, Norvvern Sole, and Wigun Casinno, and see if we could sell them !
How to ruin reputations #1
Mind you, a certain member of SS (I can't reveal anything about him other than his name: Clanger v2) obviously thought the same about all the tat on sale because he managed to totally wreck one T-Shirt stall on the Saturday. All he did was fall over into the middle of the stall !!!
Friday night's music did tend to be a little on the old oldies side early on, but if that's what people dance to, that's what the majority of DJs are going to play on the first offical night of a weekender. My spot ran from 5am to 6am, and Arthur Fenn followed me so my parting comment was "Arthur I'd love to hear you do a full on Northern Spot, but I'm off to bed". Which is what I did.
Saturday lunchtime approached with the speed of a tin tray on the Cresta run, except we were using the tray for beer ! More autographs to sign as well ! It was also the Man United Bolton match on the big screen in the Queen Vic that afternoon. So John Mills and I wandered over when the pub opened. Now I've never made it a secret that I have always been a Bolton Wanderers fan, and in all honesty the way the lads are playing at the moment, on paper it looked like we were due a stuffing from United who are at the top of their game at the moment. So, because it appeared that the pub was filling up with United fans, I thought I'd better get the insults in quickly before the game started. I spotted several other lads who I knew were Bolton fans but they were on the whole keeping their heads down. Not me though, several comments like asking if there was anyone from Manchester in the pub,etc etc. It was all done in jest though and I think really livened the atmosphere in the pub up.
Thirty minutes after kick off my nightmare was coming true, Bolton were losing 3 - 0. It's quite strange having sixty odd people in the room turning to point and laugh at you everytime United score !
I had to go and open the stall at this point, strange that it coincided with United's third goal going in, and the words that rang in my ears as I tried to creep out of the room came from Leon "Taxi for Mr Rimmer". All I can say is well done lads, I'll get my own back next year !
Saturday night, the live acts. What can I say ? Pat Lewis was probably the least well received, but in fairness she was a late addition and had a sore throat. Morris Chestnut was superbly attired in a bright red suit, and in all honesty who would have thought it would have been possible to see him sing 'Too Darn Soulful' live on stage in North wales !!
Roy Roberts, great guy, great singer, great show. Prince Philip Mitchell (If you are his mate do you call him Prince or Philip ?) apparently a bit of the prima donna attitude shown early in the day, but made up for it by delivering a superb show. For me though the star of the show was rightly Dee Dee Sharp. Such a small lady with such a big voice !!! Awesome, worth the money just to see her sing on stage. As usual the crowd were brilliant for all the artists, responding with applause, singing along, cheering, and generally being a UK Soul crowd having a good time.
Back to the music, slightly better than Friday, but why oh why do some DJs not listen to what has been played before them ? Wind up of the night involved Roger passing every empty glass he could fine along the line to Lindsey who then had to get up and put them round the corner. She was getting angrier and angrier as the night went on, I'd realised what Roger was doing and took delight in passing all the glasses to Lindsey.
The need for sleep overtook me about 4am so I sloped off and managed to get a good four hours before Woody and Weston returned. Woody went off to bed, and Johnny Weston had to endure me listening to Roger & Hoss's Mother's Day Special Breakfast radio show.
The idea of Roger to ring his Mother live on air to wish her Happy Mother's day was inspired and had me rolling about laughing.
Following the radio show it was time to go for some breakfast with John Mills, leaving the radio show on the telly for John Weston to listen to. It might have been a tad loud, but at least he wouldn't miss anything.
Sunday afternoon was spent sitting quietly reading a book of 17th century rennaisance poetry to a gathering of a select few, and signing a few more autographs. In fact I must have read so much poetry that I had to go for a lie down when I eventually packed the stall away at 5pm.
How to ruin reputations #2
If you were in the Oldies allnighter when Dave Evison blew all the power and all the sound went off, I can also reveal the truth now. It wasn't Dave Evison's fault at all. A certain Mr Ian Wills took the lid off his record box and it slid off the table and knocked the plug out of the socket !
6.30 Sunday night and the highlight of the weekend for me. John Weston and Keith Money double decking in the pub for two and a half hours. As an antidote to the Oldies of the main room these two started Sunday night off with stylish sychronsied DJ dancing behind the decks, oh yeah, they played one or two rather classy tracks as well. Keith has been my favourite DJ for a long time now, and of course Johnny Weston is one of my best mates so it was a real pleasure to hear them playing fresh and exciting tunes, which they both so obviously enjoyed playing.
How to ruin reputations #3
It was Lindsey's Birthday on the Sunday, and Karen's daughter (Who is only 12) had bought her a lovely card and written in it "Are you going to have a dance tonight or are you going to get trashed with the lads again ?"
So Lindsey is officially a lush, but I know she did enjoy the weekend and laughed so much on the Saturday when John Mills and I regalled her with tales of John Weston on tour that her ribs ached from laughing.
Sunday night is always the night the record Dealers have off work so to speak, so we always tend to get rather well oiled. Roger Banks and I do anyway, which might explain away some of the more bizarre moments of our joint sets late on the Sunday nights (It actually doesn't, but that's a different matter !!!). This year was no different, I started off with two instrumentals, and off we went. All credit to the crowd though, they danced to whatever we played. As the spot finshed I looked to the left of the stage and noticed a queue of people forming, all with bits of paper and pens in their hands, even with their own 'official photographer'. That's right. they were queuing up to get my bloody autograph !
Brilliant wind up organised by John Weston I believe. I also later discovered that it was videoed as well, so watch UTube for that one soon.
An hour later, and I'd lost my voice completely and was having difficulty forming words in a coherant fashion and I decided my poor body had taken enough abuse for one weekend and staggered off out into the wind to bed.
The end of another wonderful weekend. To the people who moaned about the music, get a life, Prestatyn isn't about the rarest of the rare all the time. It's about having a laugh, a dance, and a good time with your mates. We managed all that and had a great time doing it.
Records bought:
Just three
Dorothy & The Hesitations - Trying To Work Out A Plan- Jamie (Current play for Karl Heard, and soon one for me)
The Shufflers - Always Be Mine - Crackerjack White Demo (The really rare one that is by The Shufflers rather than by Jay & The Shufflers)
And a copy of the Watson & The Sherlocks cover up I'm currently playing, so if anyone is interested in making me an offer on that PM me.

That Bloody Dog !
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 11 March 2007 · 13 views
I'll come to the dog later.
Well, purchases over the last couple of weeks (Because I forgot I bought something last week !)

Walter & The Admerations - Man O Man - Soul City
Edwin Starr - Back Street - Ric-Tic
All the above are for sale.
Elbie Parker - Please Keep Away From Me - Veep (and this one was for me)
Right. Onto the bloody dog ! I never wanted a dog, but when Margie took the kids to 'look at some puppies' thirteen years ago, and came home with one what can I do. Anyway. I normally do the walk last thing at night, and it's not a thick dog, he knows I do the last walk at night. (By the way. he's called Chaz, the kids thought it would be funny, given the fact I'm called Dave !!! Work it out!!!!)
So, if I arrive home at 7am, like this morning, the dog is waiting for his walk, because I didn't take him last night, and do you think I can get away with it ? Not a chance ! So, instead of heading off to bed, I'm walking the dog, and then doing his toast for breakfast as I type this !
Ah well.
Middleton last night was down slightly on numbers, but I suppose that's the Prestatyn effect. That said, the ones who did come were up for it and certainly the main room and the R & B room saw some heavy dancefloor action throughout the night.
Here's what I played between 2.30 and 3.30 am, in roughly the right sort of order.
Athens Rogues - She Could Love Me - Stop
Cavaliers - Hold Onto My Baby - RCA
Vondells - Hey Girl - Airtown
Van Dykes - Save My Love For A Rainy Day - Mala
Valentinos - Sweeter Than The Day Before - Chess
Satisfactions - Take It Or Leave It - Smash
Bobby Freeman - Swing Me - Unreleased Autumn (Jimmy Washburn C/U)
Elbie Parker - Please Keep Away From Me - Veep
Theresa Lindsy - Prepared To Love You - Magic City
Fabulous Peps - With These Eyes - Wee 3
Metros - Since I Found My Baby - RCA
Jack Montgomery - Baby Baby Take A Chance On Me - Revue
O'Jays - I'll Never Forget You - Imperial
Brooks Brothers - Looking For A Woman - Tay
Frank Dell - He Broke Your Game Wide Open - Valise
Brice Coefield - Ain't That Right - Omen
Joanne Courcey - I Got The Power - Twirl

Thoroughly enjoyed myself again, and have to say you can't really fault Andy McCabe when Middleton is on. Top nighter, as it should be.
Prestatyn next weekend, so don't expect anything sensible on the blog !
Night night
Building Up A Head Of Steam
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 05 March 2007 ·
Well, I was just too busy yesterday to write the blog, spending a good seven hours in Bristol at the first UK Munny exhibition where my youngest was exhibiting a piece (And if you don't understand that, don't worry !!!)
Back to Saturday though: Steam Allnighter.
A mixture of a comedy of errors and a great night out. Des Parker and Johnny Beggs are the guys who run the Steam allnighters, and their aim is to provide an allnighter in a reasonable venue, at a reasonable cost, which will play good quality Soul music from all eras and styles.
To that end, entry to Steam on Saturday was the grand total of £1 before 10pm last Saturday. The comedy of errors bit comes in when Des Parker, who had been ill all week with an upset stomach went to the Doctors on Friday, and they sent him to hospital, and kept him in. (Apparently he's ok now) Johnny Weston also cried off sick, Killah, who was the first DJ hadn't been told he was first, so didn't arrive on time, and the flyers that were put out prior to the event didn't have the date on them !
All the DJs basically work for nothing, but get the freedom to play whatever they want with no pressure to fill the dancefloor, hence Johnny Beggs played a spot of Latin Boogaloo and Phil Wainwright slipped some Disco, and it was Disco, into one of his spots.
No playlist this time, because I'm too idle to open the box and sort through it.
Last bit of news is that I've just been booked to DJ at the Baltic soul weekender on the 23rd and 24th of this month, so that's even more cheap tobacco I can stock up on. Thanks guys.
What A Weekend !
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 25 February 2007
The silly grin which I wore on my face all day Saturday has just about worn off now.
Why ? I hear you ask.
Well, if you're sitting comfortably I'll tell you. Friday night I didn't really fancy going out, there wasn't a Soul night on within easy travelling distance, and it was the World Club Challenge with St Helens playing Brisbane Broncos on Sky. Against my better judgement my darling beautiful and wealthy wife persuaded my to go down to the casino in Dudley for a couple of hours to meet Woody and Lou.
"Oh go on then, they'll be showing the rugby league on the big screen" At this point I have to mention that I don't go to the casino to gamble, Margie likes to play the slot machines and I generally watch sport on the telly whilst chatting to Woody and becoming more and more inebriated as the night goes on. I'll put a pound in a machine and if I don't win I'll walk away, and in fact if I do win, I'll take the money and walk away anyway.
I digress. We got to the Casino, and they were showing the Cardiff / Preston game, so that really made my night because I'd only really agreed to go because I thought I'd get to see the rugby !!!
Six hours later I was pleased as punch. Margie, bless her little cotton socks, had won over £1,000 on the machines. What made the night better was Lou had also won over £250 as well.
So, record dealers, be aware that some of the cash I'll be paying you with in the very near future is the proceeds of gambling because Margie, generous to a tee, has donated a healthy proportion of her winnings my way !!!!
Saturday was, of course Alan Johnson's and Andy McCabe's new allnighter at Bretby. Woody and Lou picked us up, and we set off on what should have been under an hours journey. Now over the years I must have made the trip to Bretby well over three hundred times. It's dead easy, the A461, then the A38, then the A511, and you're there. Woody decided to go the other way down the M42 !
A couple of hours after setting out we arrived at what is in fact a very nice venue. Up the stairs and there's a lobby for the record dealers, and then you're into the sweltering main room. I say sweltering because unlike some big venues, not only did the heating work, but it was on full blast. But, if you will let Roger Banks set up next to the thermostat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every other DJ was called Dave, but the set that impressed me most was by Rob Kay. Every time I hear him DJ he manages to pull a couple of crackers out of his DJ box that I didn't know he owned. Well done mate.
I was due to DJ at 3am, following Dave Welding. Imagine my surprise when I got to the decks to find Dave Evison with his records sorted all set up to go on. I pointed out that he was a little early, and that he was supposed to be following me. Much swearing accompanied the putting away of records. I blame it on all the Dave's. It just gets confusing when you're getting on in years.
Very busy night as well and although the beer was a bit pricy, it was Marston's Pedigree.
So, here's the playlist from 3am to 4am
Cavaliers - Hold Onto My Baby - RCA
Mel Wynn - Stop Sign - Wand
Cooperettes - Shing A Ling - Brunswick
Fabulous Peps - With These Eyes - Wee 3
Satisfactions - Take It Or Leave It - Smash

Ike & Tina Turner - Dust My Broom - Tangerine
Mickie Champion - What Good Am I - Musette
Gladys Tyler - Mr Green Mrs Green - Decca
Syng McGowan - That's What I Want - Hope
Baby Jean - If You Wanna - Stacy
Five Royales - Catch That Teardrop - Home Of The Blues
Tommy T & The Targets - Sales Pitch - Big R
Patience Valentine - If You Don't Come - Sar
Idols - Just A Little Bit More - Reveille
Watson & The Sherlocks - Little Old Groovemaker - C / U
Jimmy Lewis - Let Me Know - Minit
Jack Montgomery - Baby Baby Take A Chance On Me - Revue
Joanne Courcy - I Got The Power - Twirl
Vondells - Hey Girl - Airtown
Marge Dodson - Be Your Baby - Decca
Magnetics - I Have A Girl - Ra-Sel
Troy Dodds - Try My Love - El Camino
Gwen Douglass - The Picture - Michelle
Thoroughly enjoyed doing the spot and was pleased to see a full floor throughout.
'Til next weekend.

I sit here before you, a tired but happy man.
Friday night DJ'ed at Bury allnighter, managed to grab the first of the two records I bought this weekend there, and then it was back to the Midlands in the morning. Saturday, parents came to visit so couldn't slink off to bed, then it was back up the motorway to The Greatstone where I grabbed the second title. Finally arrived home at 5.30 am this morning !
Both events were great in different ways. Bury was a top class Northern Soul allnighter with each ofthe DJs contributing something different and people still dancing at 6 am. Greatstone was musically quite different from Bury, but just as much quality Soul music. Funny thing that Margie pointed out to me was that about 15 of the crowd at The Greatstone had made the journey up from the West Midlands. When the last record was played there were still 12 of 'em in the room !
Purchases this weekend
Gwen Douglass - The Picture - Michelle
The Satisfactions - Take It Or Leave It - Smash
Playlist from Bury later if I ever get the magazine finished !
A Tale Of Three Margarets
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 13 February 2007
Well, got back last night from DJing at the Wildcats Soul Club allnighter in Vicenza, Italy.
We travelled out on the Friday afternoon, and I tell you, I was a bit worried on the Thursady night before we left. There was a slight matter of some snow during the Thursday morning, which meant that when I went to bed on Thursday, Stansted Airport was closed, and Central trains were cancelling everything to Stansted !
Still, intrepid adventurers that we are, we set off Friday morning, and amazingly the train was running, the airport was open, and the flight was almost on time !
Arrived at Venice Treviso around 11.30 pm and Andrea & Renato were waiting to collect us. We went straight off to the local bar they all use in Vicenza where they had some decks set up. Arriving there about midnight I had to laugh. I'd expected a venue type of bar, but it wasn't, if you could get ten people in the bar it was rammed, but there were about sixty people standing outside as well ! I was asked if I'd do an hour's DJing, and of course I said yes, especially as I had heard the magic words 'Your money is no good in this bar'
Several beers later, we eventually arrived at our apartment, sixteen hours after having left home !
Saturday morning was spent exploring Vicenza with Margie, because although I'd been five years ago, she didn't come with me that time. Saturday afternoon was back at the bar. Vicenza were playing the mnighty Juventos that afternoon, so it ended up with me and Roccia having a few beers and discussing life in general (as you do) Margie had gone back to bed !
Saturday night it was back to the Nuovo Astra Bar to meet up and get a lift to the venue. As the niter was advertised to start at 11 pm I was a little surprised that we didn't set off for the venue until about 9.30 pm because there was a meal booked first. It was so Italian though, not only did 22 of us sit down for a four course meal an hour before the nighter started, it meant that the music didn't start until 12.15 am because all the DJs were still eating !
The venue itself was rather special as well, a restaurant, hotel, and night club, up the side of a mountain somewhere near Vicenza. Like a small version of Mr M's with the balconey, and it was still unchanged from the Seventies when it was turned into a club, well maintained, but not updated if you know what I mean.
A real mixture of music followed, from Fifties R & B, a little Ska, Latin Boogaloo, Oldies, Rarities, Uptempo, Midtempo, you name it, if it was Black American, one of the DJs probably played it. There were even two Seventies records played !
Back down the mountain, at twenty five miles an hour round the hairpin bends, in thick fog ! I was tempted by the idea of going for breakfast with Andrea and Renato, but Margie needed sleep again, so we declined and went to bed. The offer of meeting up for Sunday lunch was also there but we also politely declined that as well and decided to do the tourist bit and go to Venice on the train. A fabulous day out, enhanced by the fact it was 'Carnivale' in Venice, meant we arrived back at the apartment after 9pm, packed the case, and went to bed. An early start the next day saw us arriving back home, on time as well.
The tale of three Margarets ? Well there were three English women in the venue Saturday night: Margie from Dudley. Maggie from Sunderland, and Margaret from Liverpool, how about that for a coincidence !
Over the weekend I did three spots, an hour in the Nuovo Astra Bar, 45 minutes & 30 minutes at the niter. Here's what I played, but in alphabetical order, rather than split into the different spots.

Johnny Weston texted me to ask if I wanted to go to the Record meet that Des Parker and Johnny Beggs were organising in Stoke.
Why not I thought, something different. After driving round in circle for half an hour after Johnny boy said he jnew where it was I rang johnny Beggs and got directions.
The Pack Horse function room is something like a shed at the back of the pub, but there were tables for records, and a set of decks. What more could you ask for.

The Marrs Bar
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 04 February 2007
Another Sunday morning sitting at the PC.
The Marrs Bar was in terms of numbers very quiet last night, especially early on. It's hard to work out why as well really, there were people who never miss one, that didn't turn up, and yet there were some people who I didn't expect to see there because they live a lot closer to Winsford than Worcester.
That said, the music was of a consistently high standard all night, and Carl Fortnum even remembered to play 'Big City Playboy' by Jimmy Andrews for me. As I do very occasionally, I danced, and there was a flurry of people trying to get cameras on the grounds they had never seen me dance before.......Don't they know I was the DJ Dancing Competition winner at Cleethorpes one year ! (But that's another story in itself). However, the devil looks after his own, and none of the cameras worked !!!!
I really do enjoy The Marrs Bar though, and although this wasn't the busiest night everyone I spoke to enjoyed it as well.
I DJ'ed between Midnight and 1am, and despite low numbers, did manage to get a fairly busy dancefloor with this lot

Going To A Go Go On The Rare Side
Posted by Dave Rimmer, 28 January 2007
Made the trip down to wellingborough for the inaugural night of Going To A Go Go On The Rare Side. Great venue, could have done with about twenty more bodies in to make the place really buzz, but the music was superb all night.
Len Dopson played a cover up that has gone straight on my wants list, except I have no idea what it was ! Does anyone else know what it is, I can't even tell you what he's got it covered up as though.
I played two half hour sets, in roughly this sort of order:
First set was dedicated entirely to Len Dopson knowing what a fanatical R & B fan he is.
Betty O'Brien - She'll Be Gone - Liberty
Syl Johnson - Try Me - Twilight
Reatha Reese - Only Lies - Dot

Emanuel Laskey - This is his story by Rob Moss

Site note - this article was originally published on Soul Source in full back in 2006, it was clipped approx 2012 at the author Rob Moss's request. Rob here in 2023, has just given us the ok to revive and re-publish this and others in full.
This is the second revived one and the plan is to revive the others on a weekly basis.
Famed Detroit producer/songwriter Clarence ‘Clay' McMurray once stated "...there are only two real voices in Detroit of any consequence - Emanuel Laskey and James Epps." Seen in the context of a post war setting, and ignoring the omnipresence of natives like Aretha, the Motown ensemble and Jackie Wilson, this statement has a resonance and reassurance that bears a lasting testament to two of the best singers to emerge from the Detroit music revolution of the early 1960s. Neither reached the commercial plateau their talents deserved, yet both made some of the most compelling recordings ever made during that very special decade. Both have distinctive, easily recognizable voices that easily convey the emotions they dealt with. Emanuel Laskey's career began in 1962 and spanned over two decades. This is his story.

James Emanuel Laskey passed away in his apartment in the lower east side of Detroit on 23rd June, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. He was 61.His legacy, as one of Detroit's finest vocalists and performers, is assured, and he leaves a significant body of recorded work that will maintain his memory ad infinitum. As a person, he was a very special individual who will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to have made his acquaintance.

From the outset, he opted to call himself Emanuel, and not his given name James, deciding that it sounded more ‘showbiz' and had a more attractive sound and appeal. While still a teenager, he began to frequent a local east side club where many aspiring singers and musicians gathered. With a wistful smile of fond recollection he reminisced about those early days. "We all started at this club, The Village, on Alexandrine and Seldon. Nathaniel Mayer was there, Billy Lee (Mitch Ryder) was there, Ronnie Abner, Tommy Stone (Storm) and Joe Harris and myself. The Village became a very strong starting point in Detroit for a compilation of local artists around '63, 64." It wasn't long before Laskey came to the attention of erstwhile Motown star, Richard Street, and producer Don Davis, who had aligned themselves with one of the many fledgling record labels in the city, Thelma's Records. The label was owned and operated by the parents of Berry Gordy Jnr.'s first wife Thelma, Robert and Hazel Coleman who named it after their daughter. " Thelma was the very first recording company that I did anything with professionally. Don hadn't got there at that point. Richard Street was there. Richard had his own group, the Distants, and he's the one who actually heard me sing - and when he heard me he immediately told the Colemans about me. He was playing piano for me. It was shortly after that that Don came. When Don Davis came in, that's when the ball started rolling." Davis began organizing recording sessions at United Sound Studios on Second Avenue, utilizing many of the local session musicians who would later develop into various strains of Detroit's famed ‘Funk Brothers' and scoured the city for additional artists, writers and producers. Laskey is philosophical about the rise of Gordy's Motown empire and the role played by all the other smaller operations in the city. "During that time, I think what it was, there were so many small labels in the city of Detroit, that had it not been for them, it would have been hard for Motown to be a focal point. There were people at Thelma Records, there was Correctone, Mike Hanks' D Town Records, Fortune ...with various artists that were just as comparable had they had the right finances behind them. Then Motown would have had some adequate competition." Producer Don Mancha, who wrote and produced two of Laskey's finest Thelma recordings, ‘Peace loving man' and ‘Sweet lies' agrees but goes a little further. "We had good songs but the artists didn't have good management and many of the smaller labels, including Thelma, didn't have the contacts across the country to allow national success. We had talent in Detroit but really, no one knew what they were doing compared to New York. It was like a gold rush but everyone was learning their craft as they went along."

Emanuel Laskey's first recording for Thelma was a song he wrote with Thelma Gordy (Coleman) and Richard Street in 1963 - ‘Welfare Cheese'. It became a sizeable regional hit, both in sales and radio play, on release and looked destined to crossover to a national market. Then, in November, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas and sales of the record were suspended. While this might seem an over reaction, the reasoning was sound and respectful, because a lyric in the song referred to Kennedy by name. By the time the record returned to the market, momentum had been lost and the opportunity missed. It was re issued as the B side of ‘Crazy' but never duplicated the previous success.A lasting legacy from this episode was the nickname ‘Cheese' that persisted throughout his life. Laskey assisted Thelma in other ways, by bringing other artists into the company. "Tommy, Ronnie and Joe did the background vocals on some of my records. Thelma Records in turn put them together as a group and they became the Fabulous Peps." He had known Billy Kennedy since their days working in the Wonderbread bakery together and readily recommended him. "He wanted to sing so much that he would work the nightshift, sit around the studio all day, go have a sleep for a couple of hours and then go back to work." Through his familiarity with many local performers he ‘discovered' Martha Star, and Joe Matthews who both recorded for the label along with a pre pubescent Rose Battiste who remembers her first foray into the heady world of entertainment clearly."The company was located across the street from my high school, which made it real easy to hang out there. The first person who took the time to hear me sing was Emanuel Laskey. He brought me to Don Davis and he recorded ‘I just can't leave you' on me when I was about 13 or 14. It was really exciting hearing your own song on the radio.I was queen of the neighbourhood!"

By 1965 Mr. And Mrs. Coleman had secured the services of two distinctive yet different teams of songwriters. Don Juan Mancha and Clay McMurray worked as freelancers around the city, usually in separate capacities. McMurray had formed his own Red Cap label as a teenager and was compiling a CV that would eventually take him to Motown. Mancha was a skilled songwriter who had worked in New York, Chicago and Detroit with a variety of artists and labels. Together they provided Laskey with his most successful record to date, the sublime ‘Peace loving Man' and ‘Sweet lies' (also covered by Martha Star with different lyrics as ‘I'm lonely').McMurray also contributed to the frenetic ‘I've got to run for my life' Mancha recalls Laskey's quiet manner around the studio. "He was a very conscientious young man who worked very hard ...easy to work with .. kinda delicate, sensitive, not harsh or rough like lots of others. He had really clear diction too. And he was popular around the city. ‘Peace loving man' was big in Chicago and New York. He needed better management." Joey ‘King Fish' Stribling and James Goffphine provided songs for many of the Thelma artists, including ‘Don't lead me on baby' for Emanuel Laskey. ‘Kingfish' reveals how his sessions worked. "We would always record Emanuel early in the morning - sometimes before nine - because his voice was softer then. As the day wore on his voice would kinda cut up and get quite rough. We already had the track ready so it was only overdubbing that needed to be done."

Laskey is the first to admit that his days with Thelma were some of the most enjoyable times he ever had. "Man, it was so much fun. The world was wonderful. You didn't think or see the real situation because you were too busy doing your thing. Great experiences. The Twenty Grand, Robin Seymour's ‘Swinging Time', Chit Chat Lounge. Club Bamboo. Phelps's Lounge. We did a Thelma Review one time. There was Rose Battiste, Fabulous Peps, Billy Kennedy, myself, Eddie Hill, Robert Ward. Everyone at Motown recognized and loved the Thelma artists. And I got to work with the best guys. Every record I did with Don Davis, James Jamerson played on. Mike Terry, Joe Hunter, Eddie Willis, Benny, Uriel, Pistol, Popcorn, Earl Van Dyke, Robert White all played on my sessions...wow. We had an Emancipation Celebration in Detroit and I played on it seven years straight- with cats like Tony Clarke,JJ Barnes,Betty Lavette, Walter Jackson. I was getting good money back then.$50 a night, four nights a week - that would pay the rent with lots left over. Everybody had a Cadillac back then, but I wasn't a Cadillac kind of person. I drove a Volkswagen. I've always been kind of conservative like that - no ‘show' " Although ‘Welfare cheese' remained his personal favourite, his general preferences are somewhat surprising. " I've always really liked the slower, soulful numbers, but I always seemed to do the uptempo numbers. At the time teenagers were the market - the audience - so we aimed at them."

Motown bought out Thelma Records in 1966, though none of the artists' contracts were taken up, which left Emanuel Laskey in limbo. "Mike Hanks called me with a song he wanted me to do, so we recorded ‘I love you madly' at Terra Shirma. James Epps was in the studio listening to me sing it. Then Mr. Wingate decided he wanted it for the Fantastic Four as the follow up to ‘The whole world is a stage' and I had to take the tape to James for him to learn. Man that was tough, especially when it became a hit." If every cloud does indeed have a silver lining Laskey found his in another song provided by Mike Hanks. Hanks had struck a deal with Armen Boladian's Westbound set up to release two songs he had recorded on Laskey, ‘More love (where this came from)' b/w ‘Letter from Vietnam'. ‘More love' became his biggest selling single mainly due to the national distribution Westbound was able to provide. Large sales didn't necessarily mean great returns for the vocalist however, "...we got 3 cents per copy sold or a percentage. The reason why artists didn't make that much was that if a record was a hit, the artist would be charged for studio time, musicians and producers fees and some distribution costs against royalties. That didn't leave much." As a result of the record's success, Laskey embarked on several national and regional tours to support and promote it, but faltered when the follow up, ‘Never my love', failed to capitalize on ‘More love's momentum. Which is a pity, because he managed to inject his own unique and truly soulful identity on a song that would usually be confined to lifts and supermarket aisles. Although he never recorded for Westbound again, the Laskey name would surface on several small labels well into the 1970s with such songs as ‘Remember me always' for Stag, ‘ Just the way (I want her to be)' for Music Now and ‘I'd rather leave on my feet' for Dennis Talley's DT label. The latter saw him swept up in the disco fad of the 1970s - surely the ultimate knackers yard for the truly soulful spirits that preceded it.

Emanuel Laskey had always maintained a close relationship with the Gaye family. He had dated Anna Gordy in the early days, before she married Marvin, and had stayed with Marvin, with his brother Charles, in 1975. Anna invited him to stay with her in 1978 in California, where he recorded several tracks at Robert Gordy's Stone Diamond Productions facility in concert with Mel Bolton and Marvin himself. Although previously unreleased, two of the tracks have recently been re mastered and made available commercially through Hayley Records in the UK. ‘(Put your name) In the hall of fame' b/w ‘A different kind of different' exhibit all the usual Laskey trademarks - impassioned, soulful vocals, poignant lyrics and clever arrangements. These songs would prove to be his last recordings. An industrial accident, sustained on his return to Detroit, restricted his mobility and curtailed any possibility of strenuous activity. This didn't prevent him helping to found The Original Historical Musical Society of Detroit, with Frankie Garcia, in 1993. The organization was dedicated to aiding and assisting the many Detroit artists with royalty dues, performance opportunities, recording possibilities and unreleased material release. In 1995 he produced a video intended to resurrect his career, and discussions took place to arrange some ‘live' performances in England, although, for health reasons, these never materialized. A book detailing his fascinating career was also discussed.

On a personal note, Emanuel's passing affected me deeply. We had become firm friends over the years, and had corresponded frequently. He never failed to amaze me with his staggering memory; often able to remember addresses, phone numbers and other detailed data about people he hadn't seen for over 40 years! And his soft and gentle persona seemed to easily handle whatever adversity or challenges came his way. I am a better person for having known him.

To conclude, here is a tribute written by his life time friend Larry Thomas Webster, who was a constant companion, confidante and ally to the man we still call ‘Cheese'

REMEMBER ME ALWAYS

We call him Jimmy...
But the music world knew him as Emanuel!
The young man with ‘The Golden Voice'
Unforgettable diction of an English Professor,
His smoothness was like Nat King Cole.
But he was my childhood buddy,
My teenage friend, and my lifetime brother.
Just like the record he recorded...
‘Peace loving man' he WAS a Peace Loving Man.
Love you my buddy!
Just like the wonderful song that you sung...
I was ‘Lucky to be loved by you'
I got ‘More love' in my heart for you.

Your brother for life,
Larry Thomas Webster.

Rugby Soul Club Blog from 2007

Clefthorses 2007
Posted by Rugby Soul Club, 12 June 2007 ·
I was trying to think what to post in the thread but there was so much to say after a whole weekend, that a blog was needed.
I didn't think I was going to be able to get to Cleethorpes this year, trying to sort out someone to look after my two youngest children from Friday after school until Monday late afternoon is not an easy task.
A few months back the daughter-in-law anounced they were going to Thorpe Park from Mon 5th - 8th June.....
The brain started ticking.
If I pay the extra few days til the 11th, can we come up, stay with you and you look after my youngest two..... Oh and can Denise come too coz it's her birthday...
Perfect, the scene was set.
We arrived Friday at noon, chilled til 3pm, picked up tickets, then spent a bit of time with the family.
6pm we had to endure an "eat all you can" meal, then we were let loose.
I'd sorta hoped Friday would just be soul nite hours, then you are forced to rest up a bit ready for the blow out on Sat and don't burn out too quickly....it wasn't.
I found myself being drawn to the quality music being put out in the modern room and with only a short distance between the two rooms, it was perfect for me. I would have loved to try out the upstairs room but with no lift I wasn't wasting any dance energy on climbing stairs.
Being the sensible person I am, I left at 1pm and went back to the caravan for some rest, obviously Ganche couldn't leave and she assured me she would be fine.
She arrived home at 5.30am and went straight to bed.
I was then in mother mode again and found myself being forced to go to Ingoldmells for the day...
Arrived back at the caravan by 5pm, Ganche was still asleep, I did check her breathing.
With a desperate need for soulie company, I went to find Jo on the site, with grandson in toe.
She smiled as I walked in, said to my grandson "oo, you're a lovely little monkey, would you like a banana"?....
It's a lack of sleep thing, I said a lot more embarrassing things over the weekend but as it's my blog, I don't have to spill the beans.
I dragged her back to our caravan to get ready for the full on, go for it, Sat nite session.
We waited patiently for Ganche to wake up, by 11pm I couldn't wait anymore and woke her......16+ hours she had slept!!!!
We were in silly mood by this time, everyone else was in bed, so we had to get ready very quietly.
There was no door between us and the bedrooms, so when we put on the hairdryers, we had to stand with a quilt against the doorway to muffle the sound.
We got a good picture of me and Ganche being surgeons...
At 1am we got a txt from the bedroom asking when we were leaving and to be a bit more quiet.
We arrived at the venue at 2am and after being in mother mode for far too long, I was ready to burst.
I was a little OTT and some of the things I said and did should not be posted on here but to sum up, I had a bloody great time.
Sorry to Colin Wood (rider) who had to put up with my insane ramblings. Also to Chris & Carlos for bouncing in front of them to show how strong my legs were and saying "I always wanted to be a punk". To Donna, James and Jenny, you were very polite as I talked at you.
To anyone else I may have harrassed...
After feeling so poorly at Rugby last week I needed to let off steam and I did it big style...
Ganche was still recovering from the nite before and saving herself for Sunday...
We had intended leaving about 6am but I was on too much of a high to go back to the caravan and we would have got told off again for being too loud, so we stayed till 8am.
When the music finished, I clapped, yes, I was the only one but I'd had such a ball I didn't care.
Got back to the caravan to all children awake and my daughter-in-law laughing at me nervously.
Grabbed a few hours sleep while they were still there and able to watch the childrem.
They had to leave Sunday afernoon because the eldest son had his grading for his second dan black belt in Tae Kwon Do (and he passed).
I had intended to get to the Sunday afternoon session and take the children but for some reason, I didn't feel too good.
I realised I'd left my shoes in the venue, so had to venture over at 3pm, managed to hear some of Kenny's stuff....
Chantelle took my shoes off me, tied the laces together and proceeded to play footy on the dance floor with my children. I'd given them a lecture on dance floor etiquette that just flew out the door. And I was too fragile to fight back.
I rested all afternoon ready for the Sunday night party. Not having been to Cleethorpes before (yes, I was a virgin), I thought the Sunday nite thing would be quiet, subdued, chilled.
So with kids in toe, in we went. I hid them round the corner in what had been the record room.
I should have known that nothing is quiet and subdued on the northern scene, where everyone got the energy after a very long weekend, I'll never know...
Big thank you at this point for Ady allowing me to drag them along, it was Ganche's birthday at midnight and I so wanted to be there.
Come midnight, we did the cake and candles bit, gave her her pressys and off I went and left her to it.
I would have loved to have stayed till the "small wee hours" but we can't all lock the kids away and go and have fun...
I was still buzzing from the whole weekend, so I packed everything up before I got a few hours kip.
I got a txt from Chris Morgan to say, he'd got Ganche and would bring her back later.
At 7am, I said I would pick her up later, got one back saying pick her up now, so I bundled the kids in the car, thinking she must be ill.
He opened the door and said "I was joking".
Don't you just love the sence of humour of a soulie...
We manged to get out of the caravan for 10am and headed to town for a birthday brekky for Denise. The plan was for whoever was still there or still alive, to meet up with us.
The Rimmer party were still in their caravan tidying up!!!!
Cat's group haven't surfaced yet!!!!
I missed the call from Chris & Carlos, so by the time I realised, they'd left!!!
Never mind, Lionel and Marie managed to find us as it was the cafe next to their B & B.
We left Cleethorpes at 11.30am and I was back in bed by 3pm.
I haven't had so much fun in a long time, good music, great friends, I will be back.....

Charles Walker turns it loose with the Dynamites... Kaboom

Charles 'Wigg' Walker turns it loose with the Dynamites
Soul singer learned from funk and soul legends of the '50s and '60s
May have read over the last few years on here reviews and such on Charles Walker's recent shows in the uk, just read an article detailing just what up to right now.
A few clips below, just to show that its not just a run of the mill press release, but in fact a interesting read covering current, history, background and what he's trying to achieve and how
With the release Tuesday of Kaboom!, an album that fairly lives up to its incendiary title, the group is primed to secure a foothold in the burgeoning deep funk movement alongside Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Breakestra and The Poets of Rhythm.....
Etta James and Sam Cooke were just two of the other luminaries with whom Walker worked during that era, a period in which he was fronting a "straight-up soul and R&B" combo called Little Charles & the Sidewinders. Thanks to a push from saxophonist King Curtis, another big name on the scene, Walker and the band went on to become mainstays at Small's Paradise in Harlem. With the Sidewinders, he also released a number of singles for Decca Records.
For a neo-funk band like the Dynamites, the tricky thing about turning it loose, to borrow from Walker, is to do it in a fresh way. This is especially the case when your touchstones include James Brown, Hank Ballard and Dyke & the Blazers, pioneers who patented their styles the better part of 50 years ago.
"The idea was to make a record that didn't sound like it was made in 1962," Elder said. "We kept that in mind at every point during the making of our album.
"Our goal was to have one foot planted in the funk and soul of the late '50s and '60s and yet also to give the music a new twist.....

Sad News Freddie Scott RIP

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, he moved to New York as a child where he sang in his grandmother's gospel choir and even recorded some tracks as a solo singer before entering college with the intentions of becoming a doctor. By the '60s though, Freddie had given up medical school to work as a songwriter in the city's famed Brill Building. Among his compositions were Paul Anka's "It Only Lasts For A Little While" and Gene Chandler's "From Day To Day".
The full article can be read at http://www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm
In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down. Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favourite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time.

Kettering Corn Market Hall April 21st

Hello fellow soulies.
The Corn market hall kicked off at 7.30 on Saturday the 21st of April with Steve Towers playing a subtle mix of old and new.
After a quiet start the place began to fill up a bit, but there were a lot of faces missing. We clashed with an annual commemorative do in Market Harborough which was a bit of a shame. And it looks like we’ve done it again in June and clashed with Rugby, (sorry to Karl and other organisers). Though numbers were down (even Bob Barr didn’t turn up) we still had a brilliant night, trying out a young local DJ, Sean, who when he’s not DJ’ing is a nurse at Kettering General. He played some really underplayed stuff and his spot was (in my humble opinion) inspired!
If you liked Sean you can catch him playing a sixties spot in the Prince of Wales most Thursdays. Trev played his usual mix of modern, R&B and underplayed oldies along with a few youth club toons. His spot included a duet from Frank Wilson and Chris Clarke which I bet most of you have not heard before!
June 2nd is the next date for your diary. We have managed to book our legendary friend Soul Sam! Ever popular Sam will be spinning a mix of old and new and we may be selling tickets to prevent the night being oversubscribed.
We will keep you posted on this.
Soul in the Park tickets and details will be available in June at £8 each (what a bargain). In the meantime, please pass this newsletter on to anyone you think may be interested.
Tara for now,
Trev, Steve and Lynn

David Sea - A new 45 release out now from Shotgun records!

News and press release of a fresh new release on the Shotgun Label
PRESS RELEASE
May 2007
SELECTA RECORDS LTD have established a new label called Shotgun to focus on ‘classic soul’ product.

The initial release “Believe In Me” / “Let’s Just Get Together” by soul star David Sea (SHOT 101) is available on 7” single from May 14th.
“Believe In Me”

“Let’s Just Get Together”

Both tracks were written and produced by Jerry Weaver (now deceased) and were recorded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1971.
David Sea is best known as a member of The Temptations but he also has a strong international following as a solo artist.
It is often noted that David sounds similar to Teddy Pendergrass but on these early tracks he comes across more like Bobby Womack.

Much of the product on Shotgun will be previously unissued tracks from the golden era of soul music. Also scheduled for UK release are vintage recordings by Sam Dees and Rozetta Johnson.
Shotgun is distributed by Selecta Records which was formed to provide an outlet for contemporary soul music. The Selecta label was launched in January 2007 with singles by Sheba Potts-Wright and Bobby Hutton and is currently successful with its new single by Simone De.
P&R and business affairs for Selecta and Shotgun are handled by music publisher Paul Mooney who is managing director of Millbrand Music.
For seven years he acted as production manager and A&R consultant to Grapevine Music Group. Prior to that he ran the Ardent, Zing and Forever labels and negotiated major recording and publishing deals with Polydor records and PolyGram Music for the double-platinum selling pop group Lighthouse Family.

Available from Soul Supermarket Crazy Beat, Soul Brother, Beatin' Rhythm, John Manship, Record Corner, Funky Feet etc etc

More soul on the radio - www.lifefm.org.uk

I've recently started broadcasting on 103.6fm in NW London on a Wednesday night from 10.00pm - 12midnight with the Vinyl Vault on Life FM. General soul, mod jazz, ska and other odds and ends is mixed with events news and occasional guests (6 June DJ Cello returns for more fierce ska and rocksteady). Also available on www.lifefm.org.uk - the show crashed online last week because too many people were trying to access it at the same time so the station is increasing bandwidth soon to help with this scenario. Hopefully all will be well this Wednesday night. If you do get a chance to listen I'd welcome feedback at the address below - it's not perfect yet but improving weekly I hope. Well done to everyone who's secured space for real soul music on the airwaves and thank you if you take the time to tune in. Best, Martin Gavin scotchmartin@lifefm.org.uk

The Apollas - H B Barnum Weekender Stars, 6ts Northern & modern weekender 8-10th June

Hot news from the 6TS nerve centre.

Unfortunately due to illness Kell Osborne isn't well enough to travel. However we have the stunning girl soul group The Apollas as replacements and they will be regaling us with the stomping sounds of You're Absolutely Right, Sorry Mama, Just Can't Get Enough and the Northern classic Mr Creator.

HB Barnum needs no introduction and we are very fortunate to get a musician of his calibre to come over and give a very rare live vocal performance when he is so busy working with Aretha and many other world famous singers. He will be singing his Northern hits It Hurts Too Much To Cry, Heartbreaker, Three Rooms With Running Water, his modern soul classics If You Want A Love Affair, All Alone By The Telephone and has promised more surprises, which if you remember his sensational performance at the Great Yarmouth TAC weekender twenty years ago, should be quite something.

Weekend passes are still available www.6ts.info for details.

Hitsville Soul Club hit Pittsburgh for the "NeverSouledOut" Allnighter on Sat 12 May

The travelling soulies of The Hitsville Soul Club hit Pittsburgh for the "NeverSouledOut" Allnighter on Sat 12 May...here's what we got up to..

Mark Holmes and I touched down at Pittsburgh International around 5pm and after a nightmare traffic journey arrived at the hotel a couple of hours later. Quick shower and visit to Red Lobster later and we were en-route to The Gallery - the venue for the Friday night party laid on by Justin (The Promoter) and The Vintage Scooter Club. Des Parker, Johnny Beggs and Karl Heard (Over from UK), were already nestled next to the bar and the music was being provided by our host and local guys from the Scooter Club. Lots of boogaloo, instrumentals and latin influenced stuff came from the turntables as we settled in. By 10pm Russ Vickers, up from Virginia and Jason Thornton (Up from Florida), arrived and we were treated to Jason spinning some great classic Northern for the last hour before we left at midnight when they closed up. Highlight of the evening was when Dave Brown (Philly Archives), came in with Mr Bobby Fulton. (Soulville and Jay Walking Records). Had a great half hour with the Reverend Fulton and we all managed to get him to sign copies of the double album vinyl set that was produced in 2001. Have to say that the package of this two album set is really outstanding. Liner notes, pictures, good quality vinyl...it's all there and every collector should have one filed away. The UK guys set off for Ohio, (Record Show), whilst the rest of us retired to the hotel where the Numark was set up and records were played, beer drunk until around 6am. We'd made a good start to the weekend!

http://www.soul-sour...-1179214856.jpg

All freshened up by 9am, breakfast finished less than an hour later and it was off to our first stop of the day. Attic Records. Attic is owned by Fred Bohn, a well respected (on both sides of the pond), "record guy". Fred's a major collector himself and provides many scans of the earlier 45s that support the features we present in There's That Beat! Fred's store is a pleasure to visit. He's used to the Brits coming in browsing and makes you feel at home. No rush here, just lots of vinyl and a welcoming host. A search of his shelves saw him relieve me of some cash in exchange for mint Jackie Wilson - "You Brought About A Change In Me b/w For Once In My Life" - Brunswick 55392 Demo which allowed me to upgrade my "battered copy" and a Shirelles - "Too Much Of A Good Thing b/w Bright Shiny Colors" - Scepter 12192 Demo in the same condition, which advances my cause to complete their catalogue on Demos. We all bought 45s, took a few pictures of some of the artists pictures Fred has, and reflected on a morning well spent as we headed off to lunch. For anyone on a vinyl hunting trip, a stop at Fred Bohn's Attic Records is a must . Tell him we sentya!

Not too far from Fred's place is "The Strip", an area of shops, restaurants and general hustle and bustle. Lots of old style shops, vendors trying to entice you and restaurant owners looking to snare customers. We settled on an Italian Bistro with outside seating and an owner who guaranteed us he had "everything". Unfortunately, my request for the only thing I miss about the "old country" except the mighty Burnley Football Club, meat pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy drew nothing but a blank stare and a scratch of his head! We settled for some Italian nosh and watched the world go by for a while before saying our "Ciaos" to the proprietor and his missus who were good eggs and setting off for the afternoon session.

Jerry's Record Store is another of Pittsburgh's old school vinyl stops. No gimmicks or anything here either, it's cash/cheque only and once again, the staff here are friendly, knowledgeable and as vinyl crazy as any of their customers. The layout of the store is such that all the soul 45s are filed together in well kept boxes at the bottom end of the shop right next to the turntable. So basically, you can pull 'em straight off the shelf and straight onto the deck. Perfect!

Jerry has three types of pricing, boxes of $3.00, boxes of $5.00 records and then he has boxes of individually priced 45s that are not on the display shelves, so if you wanna see the best stuff, you'll need to ask. But hey...soul 45s at 3 bucks apiece! The four of us set about sifting the boxes of little black jewels and it took us about 4 hours to get through the lot. I had a great time at Jerry's. I always pine for the days when pallets of 45s were available to just sit around flicking through but where I live, most of the real deal 45 stores are long gone, replaced by the usual HMV/Virgin stores full of overpriced T Shirts and sanitized CD shelves, so sitting around sorting through 1000s of 45s with a group of like minded mates is a real treat for me nowadays. Russ was even merrily puffing away on his cigarette while digging through the boxes. Now that's a real blast from the past!

Once again everyone found something to separate them from their cash: Russ took a punt on a rather nice looking Jimmy Burns Tip Top Demo of You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone, Jas picked up Kenny Hamber 9Can't remember the title - Modern/Crossover thingy) , Mark has recently started collecting again and picked up quite a few that replaced stuff he sold before leaving UK over 20 years ago and I managed to find some bits and bobs as you can see from the pics on these pages.(TTB! - ISSUE #4). Couple of vinyl highlights for me were: Keanya Collins - "It Ain't No Secret b/w I'll Get Over It" - Blue Rock 4072. I have to admit, I'd never heard the flip to this 45 before. "I'll Get Over It" would seem ripe for today's UK dance-floors, a real quality melody with vibraphone induced backing and Keanya doing what she does best. This may have been played before Im not sure, if it was I must have been at the bar, but some enterprising D J needs to dig it out and give it an airing. The other one of note for me was The Controllers - "Feeling A Feeling b/w Somebody's Gotta Win" - Juana 3414. I have to admit, 70s records have trouble finding their way back to my boxes unless they're a bit special. This one pushed all the right aural buttons to end up in my boxes marked J. From 1972, it's another record I hadn't heard before this weekend, but will be listening to from now on and for a total of 3 bucks... dontcha just love it when that happens!

As Jerry's was closing we made our way back to the hotel, dived in the shower (not together I hasten to add), grabbed a bite to eat at a local hostelry and proceeded to the main event of the weekend. The NeverSouldOut Allnighter.

The event was held in what can only be described as a derelict old stone former church. It was dark, dank, dusty and had a large open space where decks had been set up and a large space to dance in...PERFECT! As we arrived the speakers were blaring out favorites of the local mods and scooter guys, lots of Boogaloo, Instrumentals and a hint of Latin stuff. Much the same as the previous night. We set up the There's That Beat mags, T shirts and started in on the beer that was provided in the cost of the $10.00 admission! Yeeehaw!

The DJ rosta was sliced into 30 minute sets and it wasn't long before the Northern started to get played. Karl Heard over from UK played an uptempo set, followed by Dave Brown who's set consisted of many Latin fused records and then Jason played his first of two sets before the resident locals hit the decks again. The crowd seemed up for it and people were on the floor throughout the night. For our UK readers, it's a totally different experience at a soul venue here in the States. The crowds are primarily out for a good social night similar to a regular nightclub in UK. Dancing with your chick /wife and drinking on dancefloors etc is the norm here and the young mods of Pittsburgh were determined to have a good night of it! The local DJs did their thing and the crowd responded accordingly. More Boogaloo, Latin, Instrumentals followed and everyone had a great time. Next up came the sets from the purely Northern DJs. Karl, Jason, Des all played great sets of classic Northern soul. Mainly uptempo stuff as that's what the crowd seemed to want and a highlight for me was seeing young US fans throwing themselves around to Robby Lawson - Burning Sensation - Kyser.

We decided around 3am to call it a night. We'd had hardly any sleep for two nights, and had journeys back the next morning. Was good to see the floor still busy as we left, along with a couple of Pittsburgh's finest keeping an eye on the proceedings with a smile on their face.

Big Thanks to Justin and The Vintage Scooter Club for their hospitality, we had a great weekend. If any of them come down to The Hitsville Rare Soul Weekender in September we'll certainly return the favour.
Regards,
Dave

Diplomats - Skullsnaps Uk Tour assistance request

We are interested in coming back to UK for a two or more month tour. We were in London in 2004 and performed at Cleethorphes at the 100club for the CD release and 6t weekender. We didn't realize that we had so many fans until we signed autographs for two hours after our performance and there was still a room full of fans we couldn't get too and they still had original albums and 45's.
What we are looking for is an agency or promoter who can handle the arrangements, bookings, performances, travel and lodging while we are touring there. We have CDs currently in K,US,Japan and Canada.

We have "The Diplomats Greatest Hits" available in England labeled under Kent Records. We have a Skull Snaps' CD available in Australia under Aztec Music and also in Japan. The song Trespassing on the
Skullsnaps CD it's in the new movie SMOKIN' ACES starring BEN AFFLECK, ALICIA KEYS, and ANDY GARCIA. We also are on the movie soundtrack releasedby Lakeshore records out of California. The Skull Snaps have new music releases under Ten Twelve records out of Brooklyn, NY available. We can perform as The Diplomats, a singing group; The Skull Snaps or The Waters BROS., an R&B Band which can play soul tunes from the 60's,70's 80's, 90's and current.

Different Kettle Of Fish Soul night - A flying lookback

Just a few lines to look back at the first "Different Kettle Of Fish" Soul night at the Dog In A Doublet pub Whittlesey nr Peterborough.

If you've read the events section of Soul Source you'll soon realise that Peterborough has it's fair share of various soul nights, the lads behind the DKOF wanted something a little different, the more obscure sounds, the underplayed sounds, they wanted a night to compliment the existing soul nights in Peterborough.

The venue is a lovely pub on the banks of the River Nene with it's own private function room, low ceiling, little dance floor, carpeted area that doubles up as a dance area and adequate seating area.

Mick Donnelly & Becky Cousins doubled up behind the decks until 10, followed by Paul Donnelly, Ray Mahoney and Bob Mawson did the final hour.

Sylvia Croasdell Funeral and Memorial Function details

It is with deep regret that we have to report that Sylvia died at Kettering hospital on Friday April 13th after five days on life support due to a heart attack.

Her sister Sue Henderson, with her partner Mark Johnson and Sylvia's partner Aby Marlow, were with her throughout; her children Charlotte and William visited her during this period.

Sylvia's funeral will be held at Tynemouth Crematorium, Walton Ave, North Shields, Tyne and Wear at 2.30 pm on Friday 27th April. The families would love to see anyone who wishes to attend. As per her expressed wishes, her ashes will be scattered at a later date from St. Mary's Lighthouse, a place she loved to visit throughout her life, which is situated a couple of miles further up the coast. Newcastle flowers to 48 Churchill St, Wallsend, NE28 7TD or donations to the British Heart Foundation 0207 487 7137

There will be a memorial function held after the service at the Rex Hotel, The Promenade, Whitley Bay NE26 2RL, where we will reminisce and celebrate Sylvia's life through soul music. We will be there from 3.30 pm onwards and anyone who cannot make the service is more than welcome at the function. The hotel overlooks the sea and has plenty of rooms available at a reasonable rate for overnight travellers: telephone 0191 252 3201, www.rex-hotel.com

There will also be a memorial service at Market Harborough Parish Church, in the centre of the town, at 2.30pm on Tuesday 24th April, followed by a buffet in the Three Swans hotel on the High Street virtually opposite. Flowers or donations to MIND through the local undertaker, J Stamp and Sons, 01858 462524.

The Henderson and Croasdell families will attend both events.

A brief history of Sylvia's life on the soul scene has been posted and a book of condolence has been opened at www.6ts.info The funeral information on there at the moment is inaccurate and will be corrected shortly. Thank you for your very kind and thoughtful messages posted there and on here, it has been a source of great support for the families.

If anyone would like further details you can email Sue Henderson at sparkymarkjohnson@hotmail.co.uk
