Upfront Or Way Behind Why?

Being very much out of the loop scene wise so from an outsider looking in as it were it would seem to be a common theme that some of shall we say the more upfront rare soul venues are finding it difficult to get decent numbers through the doors, lost count how many times I read the music was brilliant but numbers were down, seems a little odd to me that when you look at the playlists many of the DJ's are playing top end records which command the big ticket prices on auctions etc. yet fail to draw the masses in which seems to make a nonsence to the whole rare soul ethic.

Has the Northern scene become a retro nostalgia trip with little or no interest in different, lesser played or just quality rare soul? would it not be fair to suggest if the upfront or rare end of the music was that good then it would be better supported? or is it more down to attitude of the people trying to move it forward? or simply not that important to people who choose not to attend or support the upfront or different venues?

You're absolutely right Terry, i do need to get out and support more nights. I saw you at Rugby on Saturday by the way. I'll be dancing to the funk in Stevie's soul or nothing room in a couple of weeks time and you can catch me at Bradford in December, so i'll be making an effort in future.

Just a thought mind, why haven't you been to Move On yet?

well you are hardly gonna find out how Karl did on Saturday in this topic.

I was always taught if nowt good to say then don't say owt thumbsup.gif

Maybe Terry would be better off at times worrying about himself and not what others get up to in their own free time.

so what if a tune came out of a soul pack back in the 70's.................if you got a copy of the mello souls out of a soul pack ya wouldn.t be moaning..........there we go again associating rarity with being good.....(no arguement on this tune by the way )

example j.d bryant on shine.......f**king rare.......f**king shit pop tune

jackie lee.....do you believe on mirwood......f**king cheap.........f**king brilliant

Extremely Fu**ing rare on Shine, not as rare though on shrine

Not the only reason but certainly a major factor why I stepped back from DJ'ing was I got fed up of basically playing the same type of records, it became almost a chore rather than enjoyable simply going through the motions as good as The Cashmeres, Bobby Kline, Majestics etc. etc. are/were I felt I was selling myself short as there is often more to DJ's than their playbox, since being out of the DJ loop I have moved many of these records on despite this I could stiill cut the mustard from the collection without the tried and tested floor packing records as if they ain't there you can't play them, depth of collection has to make the DJ rather than 200 well known, big ticket or otherwise 45's which can no matter how good they are become over played and the magic of the tuine lost, in some DJ boxes it seems that many DJ's chase the same records and I certainly in part fell into that trap, as much as I loved these records I find myself in the situation of not really being that bothered about owning them anymore.

Why do you feel the need to blatantly plug your promotion every time you post?????????? FFS.............

Why is it you feel the need to put down and criticise that promotion on every occasion we discuss things on here? Is it because I had the bollocks to write my honest thoughts about the comments you made about your promotion when it ended.....sorry, of course not because you like people who aren't afraid of giving an honest opinion or do you only like it when that opinion agrees with yours? Feel free to send me another idiotic, vindictive rant by PM as they always make me laugh

Bit of a unneccesary comment Terry, especially as I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've seen Phil anywhere other than Burnley when it was his promotion.

I write what I truly feel but I don't think you need 'bollocks' to qualify. Are you saying my review of the night is untrue? From what I see here he had 'bollocks' because he had negative things to say about it. I'm not good at maths but bollocks + negativity = negative bollocks

Bit pointless having a forum, let's all say how fabulous everything is, even though it's shite..........

The trouble is Phil no matter how hard you try or think you are out of it even by our very comments and thoughts on this forum alone you can never be free of it, I've not been to more than six soul events in the past couple of years but like it or not it's still part of me, if we are true to ourselves once you become involved in this scene at whatever capacity it seems to be with you for life and that goes if you try and break away from it, sell all the records whatever, sometimes I miss it other times I hate it but having made a full on contribution to the scene over the years it's almost impossible to totally break free, I honstley can say that I don't miss going to soul events but pretty much come on hear everyday be it to sell records, nose to see what's going on out there and is one of the reasons I asked the questions here and raised the points I have as I might not be involved anymore but basically I guess I still care for what goes on and what the scene has become and the fundimental true hardcore fact in all this and deeper than owing all the rare trophy records in the world is that in it's basic natural form there is no taking away than it don't get much better than The Poets - She Blew A Good Thing, Ray Pollard - The Drifter, The Ringleaders - Baby What Has Happened To Our Love, The Dells - Make Sure, The Showmen - Our Love Will Grow etc. etc. and a thousand other records that have been the sound track to our lives all of our lives.

in the north west there are trilions of carbon copy clubs, ie clubs playing (the same classics) played out on pressings or cheap outa date in demanders ie well and truly played out five or ten years behind up front rarer clubs or nighters , i know of 3 of these clubs that are visited by the same people going to the same 3 clubs in rotation .they dance to all the same records from the previous week at one of the 3 other clubs in other words same people same records same clubs same er? dj's . no change nothing ?, they havent heard anything diferent since going t' casino 4 or five times in 1977 mrms re viseted over and over again 3 times a month if these are your er? facts my friend , need i say more !!

The Mod scene was a bit like this in the very early 1990s

I used to play things like Carl Underwood (when it was covered up as herbert hunter) and Otis Lee back then.

The popular Mod DJs were playing Berts Appple Crumble (and that was the massive tune)

Hardly anyone on the mod scene wanted to give me DJ spots at the time !!!

Chris Dale and Ian Jackson used to get me up to a Sunday club in Kings cross (water rats)

I used to enjoy that because those lads loved the tunes !

but mostly for me everything else on the mod scene at the time was hard work .................

same as this soul scene is now.

leave me alone collecting

Thats the way it is !

They are not into discovering music any more................................... Get over it !

nothing has changed !

and I still could not give a shit !

I do like Marks threads

he really dosent give a shit at the moment, and invites a bit of response laugh.gif

But he does have a real good point !

Why is this scene once so into new music now so afraid of something different ?

My pal Rich Buckley was on the blower last week going on about going to somewhere

in Europe.

Of course I will have some of that - but its a great shame that the younger scene has moved

away from the UK

Mossy I do hope your not trying to put words in my mouth old son lol yes I have publically stated pretty much I don't give a shit anymore but deep down I still love the tunes still this thread ain't about me it's about the scene in general and the fact that some venues are finding it hard to survive because of lack of support based on their music policy, the DJ thing for me became less exciting and rather stale so I stepped away from it granted it took me several attempts lol, once off the merry go round the desire and obession to buy and own records has become less important to me, despite the wayI feel, despite selling some of the so called big hitters, despite the politics, attitudes etc. I still want the people involved to enoy it and embrace the original Northern Soul ethic of alway's trying to move it forward musically and the simple fact for me personally was/is that the retro nostalgia thing simply does not float my boat so why be part of something you have little or no interest in.

Not sure if you are trying to be funny or score brownie points here lol but I've forgotton more than most and as for liking soul music what the fcuk do you think? oh and I've not posted any shit as you seem to be doing enough of that for everyone and I think the thread is a perfectly constructive point to raise, as for selling records yes thanks why you wanna buy some loll?

Resonding in the good nature that I trust your posts are as well.
