Favourite Duets

Recommended Posts

Don't know if this subject has been covered before.

Never really been a particularly big fan of duets, but I was just listening to Jimmy Holiday & Clydie King "Ready, Willing & Able" and realised what a truly great record it really is.

Always liked it - but right now I'm lovin' it!

The vocal interplay and those little adlibs here and there are absolutely superb.

Great Sax break too!

Marvin & Tammi get their fair share of hammer, but what other duets do you rate, that deserve a spin or a revival?

Interesting thread, Sean.

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell are the obvious choice for a really dynamic duet but I thought a few other teams worked very well together. Here are a few of my favourites...

Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager - Ain't Understanding Mellow

William Bell & Judy Clay - Private Number

Newby & Johnson - Sweet Happiness

Inez & Charlie Foxx - (1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days

Jackie Lee & Delores Hall - Whether It's Right Or Wrong

Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson - Big City Blues

Chuck & Mariann - Let's Walk Down The Street Together

And if you could argue that "I Want To Be Loved" by The Soul Children is really a male-female duet, it would probably be at the top of my list.

Best regards,

Paul

Frankie Howerd and June Whitfield doing "Je T'Aime" takes a bit of beating...

This is one of the few records likely to be mentioned on this thread that I have actually owned. I think I lost custody of it during one of my divorces.

My favourite duet changes from time to time. But I always end up coming back to the late, great, Jackie Lee with Dolores Hall. 'Whether it's right or wrong'. Beautiful.

I think the best duet, i have ever heard, On many levels....shock, excitement, realisation, talent, dis-belief, amazement....laughter!!

Is Jackie Wilson and Lavern baker doing there naughty verson of think twice.........A Beautifully, real account, almost, an insight into there personalities.

It's like... ohmy.gif fuckinhell!:lol::D:D:ohmy: they took cocaine and smoked the green? :D they just said mother fucker :P:P:D . And when Jackie reverbarates, lavern you ho! ho ho ho hoooooooooooohoooohooo.:lol::lol: .

But the backing track sounds so much better too....

close seconds are;

Joe and Ann Runnin and foolin.....

Duke and Leonard Just do the best you can.......(not boy and girl doing it together, but two fella's, it happens :D )

Sam and Dave It ain't no big thing baby.......

Jackie Wilson and Big Maybelle.......Dr. truelove(wouldn't that be something)

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy - In the blue ridge mountains of virginia

A classic.

chris

Ha Ha!! - funnily enough, I heard a 'live' version of this last night at the Red Bar in Wakefield - you just had to be there to appreciate it... it was priceless!!

Seriously though, duets, yes there's a fair few of em worthy of a mention:

Jackie Ross & Little Milton's "I'm in love with you"

Ashford & Simpson have done so many that I'd probably upset somone by not mentioning it!

But I suppose I better mention a few all the same:

"Main line"

"Top of the stairs"

"Get out your hankerchief"

Jean Carn & Glen Jones "Sweet & wonderful"

Art and Honey "Let's make love now"

Dorothy Moore & King Floyd "We can love"

Gene Chandler & Barbara Acklin "Will I find love"

Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager "Ever since I can remember"

Moses Dillard & Martha Starr "Cheating, teasing & misleading"

Tony & Lynn "I'm hip to you baby"

William Bell & Mavis Staples "Leave the girl alone"

Not forgetting of course, things like:

William Bell & Judy Clay "Private number"

Denise LaSalle & Latimore "Right place, right time"

Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson "I can't say no"

Shirley Brown & Bobby Womack "Ain't nothing like the lovin' we got"

Roberta & Donny "Back together again"

Al Johnson & Jean Carn "I'm back for more"

etc. etc....

Frankie Howerd and June Whitfield doing "Je T'Aime" takes a bit of beating...

Now then, I've remained decidedly tight-lipped after you slated me for my 'Bobby Bland' aside (and more or less accused me of being a narrow minded -northern- soulee, to which I heartily agree. I love northern, so sue me...) but I must say I agree with you on this one. However, let me go one better: Mike Sarne and Wendy Richard - Outside. And from the sublime to the friggin bloody obvious: Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg... can you guess... oh and Johnny and June Carter Cash - Jackson... now Mr Rounce, don't you DARE go saying that Johnny Cash isn't soulful... Right, OUTSIDE!!!

... and then you can go away and listen to 'Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison'... over and out.

and another thing...

Once when I was in the States I had the good fortune of chancing upon Thelma Houston and Jimmy Webb doing an impromptu duet (he was harmonising) of 'Someone is Standing Outside'. Stirling stuff!

I have a REAL soft spot for a duet that June Carter's sister Anita did with Hank Williams.

There is such a vibe going on between these two talented individuals.

It feels like there is electricity jumping between them.

I love it . . . . . . .
