Multi Room Events

I'm not backward in coming forward about what I like but of course, we do have to be sensitive to what other people like as well.

What I don't get, in multi-room events is the Modern Soul bit.

Of course I get that the modern soul fans love it but why. at an established event that really rocks on music that's predominantly way before what they play in the Modern soul room. do you still come just for a few hours?

From what I've experienced the modern soul room goes in there, stays there and goes home at the end which isn't at 7 or 8am in the morning.

Why don't the Modern crowd have an all nighter of their own?

Do many who frequent that room check out the other rooms that are from the 60's and if not why?

Would you prefer an allnighter of your own or is a 2am finish enough for you?

Just wondering

This is my own personal view.

Firstly, Modern Soul has a direct link to Northern Soul, it evolved originally as part of the NS scene, with what we now refer to as Modern Soul being part of the over all play list at all Allnighters. The Highland Rooms influence on this is well documented, however the Mecca became more & more NY Disco to the exclusion of traditional sounds, where as the Casino & other venues played 'Modern' soul alongside everything else if it had the right sound, remember the term Modern Soul wasnt widely used until the very early 8ts, until then it was all NS & whilst there has always been some debate for & against, many just enjoyed everything pretty much & continued to dance all night to all records regardless of the 'date' on the label.

The early 8ts saw the Modern Soul scene develop its own identity independant from that of the main stream NS scene, with Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn & many others dropping traditional NS sounds in favour of recent & new releases & events like Rock City etc being exclusively Modern Soul Sounds.

I'm not entirely certain, but I think it was the early 9ts when Allnighters started having a Modern Room. I have always enjoyed all kinds of Black Dance Music played at All nighters & would frequent both rooms & enjoy both thoroughly...........In actual fact I would still prefer to have things how they used to be........ a one room event with everything played together in one set by intelligent DJ's who can mix things up a bit..........

In recent years Modern Soul Rooms attached to Allnighters seem to have diminished & the Modern Scene continues to develop all over the UK in venues independantly. However, many of the patrons came directly from the NS scene & some, like myself continue to enjoy all good soul music regardless of decade of release & frequent both Northern & Modern Soul Venues & Rooms..

The Modern Room when I visited Radcliffe worked very well & the way Chris etc breaks the rooms into different timings for different genres with the rooms being hosted by respected moovers & groovers within said genres is brilliant.......it doesnt matter if the folk in the Modern Room all leave when thier bit comes to an end, cos an entire new lot of soul fans are going to be entertained for the rest of the Night with a different brand of soul, many people go between all the rooms anyway.

With the greatest of respect Karen your views on Modern Soul are well known & whilst I think your q's are relevent, I think they are motivated by your lack of understanding & dislike (?) of Modern Soul. I dont want a Modern Soul Allnighter I want a Rare Soul Allnighter playing the whole lot........so I can enjoy everything under one roof & preferably on one dance floor.......just like it used to be.

What was the question again........... lol.

Just wondering

This is my first & final post on this question, as for years I have been either defending my Northern corner when some of my modern friends have been slating it or fighting my Modern one when my Northern friends have been doing the very same & to me it's tiresome as the majority of my friends now get along under the same roof, in different rooms and respect each others tastes.

For me, Modern & Northern have always gone hand in hand and a "JUST Modern" nighter would not work. The only "All Modern nighter" I can recall ever going to (since joining the nighter scene in 87) was Jollies in Stoke in 1999, and fantastic as it was, it didn't get the numbers as the majority of the "strictly" modern crowd do not want an all-nighter, other than at weekenders.

Back in the days of Winsford & Bradford Queens Hall the Modern Rooms did go on till 8am and you had to drag people out in the morning, but times have changed, numbers have dwindled and you'll never get those days back again so I say well done to Radcliffe for hitting the nail right on the head with their superb layout and time slots to suit absolutely everyone :D (& no doubt pxss someone off, )

We can all live (& dance) in peace & harmony  x

Oh dear Russ, exactly the same words that you patronised me with when I say I didn't like it either, just accept that some people don't like it because it is horrible (TO THEM), not because they don't understand it.

I believe the Dom Polski Club was the first Modern All-nighter in the 1980s down Bedford way ?? Think I'm right but will be open to correction !

Thanks for all the answers smile.gif

Karen, I have been going to all-nighters since you were only 7 years old.

More importantly kept on going year after year uptill the present date.

I did cutback in the 80s when I got married and had kids, but I did not stop going!

So I like many others (not all) that are in to modern soul, we have got our roots in northern soul.

So yes at muti-room venues there should be a modern room, I am not into R & B but I'm not saying there shouldn't be a room for it just because I don't care for it.

The trouble is like Alison said alot of the modern crowd don't do all-nighters anymore, so the back room at Radcliffe is ideal.

I help run the modern nights for Malc at the barn which is a all-nighter, and it being a small venue it works! (Alison you forgot about the Barn).

I tend not to stay to the end at nighters anymore, but if I'm enjoying myself and having a laugh I will stay.

Dave.

I popped my head in the modern session at radcliffe and although its not for me it was very busy so there is a demand for it. Its a real shame steve can't get his session kicked off earlier though.

when I think of modern there seem to be splits even within that scene. Those who like the 70s etc and have a history set in the northern scene and those who got into the rare groove thing who seem to be a totally different crowd who didn't come from the northern scene. And within this there seems to be a north / south divide ?

There are more than one split in the modern scene, lol.

Crossover, two-step,rare groove, jazz, jazz-funk, house, garage, not forgetting when it was made ie. 70s, 80s, 90s or 00s.

Radcliffe's modern crowd are mainly a housey type crowd, but on the same night there was a 2 room modern night on in Leyland.

This in the main, room 1 two-step and room 2 mainly a jazz set.

Me, I think modern under what ever gene, is just a extension of the soul scene.

Finally to nick a quote from Andy Lett, "all records where modern once"
