and iam talkin about people, for me its someone who cuts a presence on the dance floor and displays an uncanny ability to pull off inticate foot work with acrobatics in perfect time with a records tempo! and can move to any speed of a genre ie from ballads to frantic mecca style 70s and even current modern soul/soulful housetracks and make it look fluid and effortless but with passion and without being awkward and ungainley.any one got a different point of veiw?

I don't think those who do all the acro are the best dancers. I'd rather see good footwork than backflips and splits etc...

What makes a great dancer is someone who enjoys it nowt to do with showing off and fancy footwork , ultimately its the pleasure that comes from dancing and if that comes across that is a great dancer .

When how you dance becomes more important then you may as well wrap it and take up ballroom .

Somone who is dancing next to you,who never bumps into you or anyone else around,no matter what you're legs are getting up to.

Sort of synchronised soul dancing.

Also someone who is totally unaware they are good. And can gurn at the same time.

Fair comment Mark but for me as well, I've always enjoyed watching dancers and part and parcel of that is that some are better than others. Nothing wrong with people who cant dance so well but I really enjoy watching the good ones.

The good ones being in my personal opnion of course cos I think dancing is the same as music - we all have a different opinion on whats good or not.

Not big on acrobatics (only in small doses) interpretation and feeling of the music is the most important

timing, poise, balance, the ability to judge a records change regardless of their intimacy of it, stamina, rrhythmm, the correct footwear, forsight, commitment, ability to count in twos to any bpm and convert that to an in time movement, a smooth and flowing result that fits complicated harmonic rifts and over fills, good gear, duraphet, pirelludin. filon or sulphate made from the correct ingrediants, ability to dance to any genre, to entertain a lady with sexual innuendo and an ego as big as his clothes, and twice the size of his manhhod (convinced size) no fear, passion, must be able to cut out all distractions. but the most important thing is to convince yourself you are the archie bell, james brown, gene kelly, john travolta, dirty dancing icon you feell you are outwardly proporting to all and are the stuff of legends"the greatest dancer youve ever seen".......................

What makes a good dancer great? For me it's just seeing someone hitting every beat at the right time, being able to spin or perform acrobatics doesn't necessarily make you a great dancer. This topic has been done many times before, and I'll say what I said then, most of the best dancers are girls, much better natural sense of rhythm, generally speaking.

i do agree that acrobatics arent the be all and end all,as ive seen dancers who could literally do a back flip but when it came to the foot work they were dire, and the other way round as well,i also do think to many gymnastics detract from what our scene is about, for me its a subtle blend of all the ingredients and done in time to the right tempo.yep to the comment about the fact some of the best dancers were and are ladies, any one know "little deb" from wigan? or donna-ive never seen any 1 do 70s stompin or the "scissors"(as we call it,) like them-yep they even chuck in the obligatory back drop and jumpin snap kicks and splits-awesome!

Its the ones that look as if they could dance to any genre and any style

I'd agree with that Ted, the ones that make it look effortless and they are born to it.

The acrobatics often look a bit odd, not in synch with the music at all, not keen on that side of it...

a good dancer is anyone who gets on the floor and enjoys what they are doing ( not counting the ones who are pissed and have a beer in hand lol  ) people should be encouraged to dance just as they wish at whatever speed they feel... so odd , and yet sometimes so right to see someone dancing to the "underbeat" of a fast record and dancing quite slow.. yet so but quite in time .. ifyou know where i'm coming from ? ... as for acro's .. at the right time please , nothing worse than "off beat " with those .. not as common now but if you can still do a bit and above all enjoy what you do then go ahead, ,it's the "northern way" and should be kept alive as part of the heritage of a great dance culture that is "northern soul " keep on steppin !

most folk never dance to any beat or rhythm .......more so the acrobats a lot seem to dance the same to every type of tune. Me l just wobble about a bit.

There used to be somebody at Brighouse many years ago who would spend most of his time doing spins, the best spins ever but crap at everything else-sure he had a good old time though!

a good dancer is someone who is in time to the musiic, relaxed and makes it look effortless, good footwork is essential.Acrobats have always been a part of the northern soul style since i can remember?although not everybody does them , there are some excellant male and females who just do footwork and are superb. The best dancer ive ever seen was gethro from wolverhampton, absolutely brilliant to watch...

I think the best dancers, like the best singers, athletes, or other skilled performers make you believe, that they believe that they were destined to do what they do. They make it look effortless, yet they posses a unique flair which separates them from the rest. They love what they do and people love to see them do it.

to mark.s.is that the same "malc" who wears the vest and dances in one spot and uses his hands alot? and who comes to nighters alone-if so this guy is a bit of a legend to.i think the one iam thinking of comes from stockport area? he has been around for years a tall thin bloke? and he hasnt altered in either looks or style(both dance and clothing)-no iam not having a pop at him,he is just one of the characters of the scene in case some one out there isnt clear on this

Ive just spent the last 50 weeks touring the Northern soul scene north south east and west every saturday for one thing to dance, to music that pulls my heart strings i give my all its the music that determines my moves mostly upright sometimes a handstand or a back drop if the mood takes me but these days the old bones dont work so well as they used to....................as a dancer in the current scene whats great about it no gives a flying Fook what moves you do its all about having a good time. old Richard whats his face said it all in that beatin rhythm....... dancing is a part of life. :hypo:

My excuse....(I can still spin), is I'm 62 and the hands and legs are fooked and you want 62 year olds with good footwork to (still) do splits/backdrops/forward drops???????

The best dancers for me are the ones who are on the dancefloor due to a reflex movement, they have had to break off a conversation, drag themselves up off there chair, stop ordering a pint at the bar etc. because that particular tunes moves them so much they have to show there passion with a few moves.........they could be on the dancefloor twiddling there thumbs for me they would still be brilliant. It's not what they do when they are out there it's why they are there that makes them great to me............I think we've all had that feeling at some time or other & did you give a toss how good or bad you looked??

While I'm here what's that all about? Those people when a record come on do a couple spins, backdrop a few steps then stop dancing after about a minute of the tune.........next record comes on,splits, backdrop a few steps,spin,stop..........next record the same a few more acrobatics then stop.............why bother just try to get in the Olympic Gymnastics team for the floor exersises :wicked:

Cheers

Hi Win

You might want to watch out for some dodgy showboating from me doing floorworks last night at the Robin Hood in edwinstowe

(a bit of daft carry on after the venue closed)

I would never consider doing it seriously tho but was great for a laugh :D

Cheers Billy

Hi Tommo,

Also fair do's to you your right what you say about the music the vibes are there then you tend to dance to the music much better in my opinion, ive been watching your dancing display on the new film coming out its a great stepping stone for youngsters. Your timing, also your accuracy and strength is spot on. Also your right their are a lot of good dancers out there i cant see the northern scene ever ending especially with the youngsters coming in only a few but the numbers will build up. Keep on keeping on. Cheers Billy.

wolverhampton,absolutely brilliant to watch...

Must agree there mate he used to come over to Chesterfield in the mid seventies big mates with Mona

Could watch him for hours!!

Tried to copy his style but he was so smooth lightening fast floor work in time with the beat and superb foot work, spins that joined seamlessly into his whole routine!

Plus he was a top guy no edge about him

Best I've every seen
