hi gang,i recently got this (via mr flynn),ive only known of the record a few months,anyway the info on google leads me to believe it IS the same group as "job opening",however im not convinced,i dont think it sounds like them?

also who discovered it and where first played...etc...

"One record by the Del Larks is hard to date.

Sometime in the 1960's the Del Larks came out with a

record called "Out of the In Crowd"Â on the Jet label.

This time Ray Davis did the lead with Sammy Campbell

doing the bridge and the ending. It's easy to suspect

that this is an answer to Dobie Gray's "The In-

Crowd,"Â except the Dobie Gray record came out in

1965 and Ray Davis left the Del Larks in 1963. In addition

Ron Taylor said he remembered singing the

song and he left the Del Larks in 1961. While the Del

Larks recalled the song, they were not aware it ever

came out. It's possible the Del Larks' song, which

they didn't write, was shopped to Dobie Gray a few

years later and changed into "The In Crowd"."

"What's this, another Del Larks record? OK, it's a different group using the same name, but with a legendary name (and obvious title) like that you'd think someone would've picked it up years ago? However, this title only surfaced in the late 90's, found by top vinyl dealer bloke, Adey Pierce. It was quickly snaffled up (from under my nose!) by Ady Croasdell, who immediately turned it into the 100 Club favourite that it is today. A second copy was unearthed which passed through a few hands but now resides with my badself! Now, it's nothing like "Job opening" at all, but is in fact a big New York production number that could have been on Musicor, Wand or United Artists and nestled nicely on a Kent LP compilation smack up Ady's avenue for sure! It's a real epic track with plenty of dramatic key changes and breaks, with strings, brass and chorus all playing their part in this tale of woe, under the eyes of Charles Callelo. I bet the promotional video would have been just like a scene from West Side Story! There are a few featured male vocalists within, of which the main one has a superb deep and rich voice that opens up proceedings with, "I'm out of the in-crowd, I don't know what, I wish you'd tell me just what a guy has to do, to be part of the group and start talking trash to you!" Wow, how hip and that's what the song is about, being hip, or rather how to be it as our chaps "Don't even know what's the latest dance", hence they're out of the in-crowd. Not a traditional Northern thumper, but more in the 6T's groove that really broke through during the mid to late 80's, and is a much loved division of the Northern Soul scene. Value wise a fair few hundred quid at least, and there's still but two copies known!"

soon as i heard it about 6 months ago i wanted it,and i hounded dave day and night until he parted with it,poor chap probably only sold it to shut me up...haha

wow! a couple of copies...that is rare,mind you it doesnt do a record any favours when there isnt many of them i think!

Please note my review was written in 2002 - before the US site stating that it was the same outfit...that site also lists it as a '61 recording, but the consensus is that it must be later.

There are definitely more than x2 copies, Mark...I know of x5 in the UK for sure.

Great info posted above which really helps to join a lot of the dots. In pre Youtube days when the only way of hearing this was pretty much at a venue I doubted if this was in fact the Del Larks, but listening again it's clearly Sammy Campbell on the higher vocal part.

Charlie Horner interviewed Sammy at length. I also asked him (Sammy), about this 45 and he says it's the same group but details were sketchy. Like Bob A, I know Charlie and if he's leaning towards it being the same group I'd tend to trust his judgement, they don't come much more thorough that Pam and Charlie Horner.

Thing is...artists are sometimes just as 'in the dark' as we are when it comes to actual 45s. I've shown records to artists, producers, musicians and they've 'claimed them' but I've known that it isn't them and by the same token sometimes they've never heard of something with their name on it. It happened only a few weeks ago with a well known Philly writer/producer who categorically stated that he hadn't written and produced a song with is name on it. His answer was "Oh, that will be ^%#((*'s doing. He did that a lot to help me out".

At Prestatyn a few years ago, some people took as Gospel Sammy's comment that Demos of Job Opening were never actually pressed. Despite him having seen both Greg T's and mine a few years earlier and him donating a scan of it to Charlie's piece. It's a funny old game eh?
