we already had topics about "rare lp tracks" a.s.o.

the 7" rules on the scene - no doubt...but a few "outlaws" did lp only sets in the past or are currently spinning 12"s ...

It would be interesting to see/read what these guys spin on niters and which ones are open minded enough for it.

Nowadays the 12" records are gettin' a bit more attention and are much more in-demand than they used to be on the scene back in the days...and to be honest: loads of brill choons out there that were missed in the past because of the northern protocol - imo!

Feel free to post your lp only playlists in here...btw. radio show playlists are also welcome.

getting lots of plays again it seems (and a lot of mention on here) is the LP only track "Sadie Sadie" from the Ripple Blast Singers LP "Funny Girl Ala Soul". picked it up on a dig first time at a shop I'd never been to here in Copenhagen, posted it here on trade as there were other tracks I was after, but it grew on me so much that its become a major staple of my sets. absolutely stellar spin, surprising nobody has cut a 45 boot of it.

I was just back in the states and catching my flight from San Francisco to New York I stupidly left my bag of LPs on the roof of my friend's car when she dropped me off in a rush. she got onto the freeway and was going 60+mph when someone honked at her and pointed to the roof all my LPs in tact, saved probably by the weight of my 45 adaptors in the same bag! absolutely devastating to realize I was without them at first though. now waiting to get it shipped back so it can reclaim its rightful seat in my set.

yeah, i liked this but could never quite get with the 80s production values on the LP & then this was compounded when I saw him do it live in NO & it absolutely destroyed the LP version, could never listen to it again & threw the LP in the bin the bloody 1980s & their drum/horn/keys sounds have a lot to answer for IMO.

and in a round about twist, the Tyrone Davis LP "Can I Change My Mind" has a grip of excellent LP only versions of things on it

The Jon Lucien is an EP, so the grooves are about as tight and narrow as on the LP, so it won't play quite as nice and loud as a normal 45.

I'm very intrigued as to this. To my knowledge this single isn't in any US Stax discography's I know of, as there aren't any missing numbers. So it must be a UK or foreign released single. Did Stax ever release anything in Guatemala?

I can't say I've ever seen one but I remember one of the Ripolles boys mentioning it on their radio show.

When I dj'd regularly I always took a bunch of LPs with me. Either lp-only tracks, or album tracks that were much much cheaper than the 45 releases, e.g. Silhouettes on Goodway. If I find the time I'll knock a list together of what I played over the years.

Two killers I've played in LP-only sets many times over the years Kev, 100% perfect 70s soul music for me, and the Notations without fail gets people up to the decks asking what it is and after showing them the LP cover the response is practically always 'I've got that LP but never played that track'!

As a lifelong LP collector I've been guilty of that countless times, only concentrating on one or maybe a couple of tracks and not investigating all the other cuts properly, but I think that's a good thing because I've approached DJ's at places like Great Yarmouth Soul Essence to ask about a track being played only to find I've had the LP for years! But as I say, that's no bad thing because a) it means I've discovered a quality new tune and b) it hasn't cost me anything!!

The best one I ever had in this scenario was a track called 'Hey Big Brother' which I had on a tape that somebody had given me in the 90s, just an absolutely wonderful midtempo 70s tune, but the tape had no track listing and I searched high and low for years trying to find it, buying LPs 'blind' because they had song titles 'Brother' or 'Big Brother' but I had no joy. Then one day I was off work and pulled out a load of LPs just to track and put on the Opus 7 LP from 1979 on Source which I'd bought 12 months earlier at Yarmouth for the stepper 'I Love You' and another track called 'The Way You Move Me' and as I looked at the track listing saw the track 'Hey Big Brother' and I thought no f*cking WAY!!! So on it went, the first bars kicked in and my bloody jaw hit the floor, what a dolt, had my biggest want in the collection for a year without knowing it!! I think that day was the one and only time I've done an actual cartwheel in my living room.

Billy Hawks was actually pressed on 45, french issue on stateside with ps . Very scarce but not impossible to find, a few djs on the mod scene do own copies.

Little Ann was pressed on 45 on Kent select.

I was outbid on the Billy Hawks 45 a while ago...would have liked it for the cover alone.
