Quite a number of the artists we know and love ended up frustrated in their recording contracts for one reason or another and to avoid the possibility of legal action for breach of contract, ended up recording for other labels under, either an alias, pseudonym, or in many cases (for female artists) their maiden name.

In addition there are a number of female northern recordings where the artist went on to fame and fortune under their married name, but leaving in their footprints some super soul tracks which are only known and appreciated by the northern scene.

I know that many of you folks out there are aware of the real identity of these artists, but I know that a lot of newcomers are not necessarily aware. I for one have been surprised on occasions to discover the real identity of the artists on some of these tracks.

To get the ball rolling, I'll throw a couple into the maiden name category and a couple into the contract name change category........................and leave you learned souls to carry on the thread :

I think the most interesting cases are the songwriters, many of whom used several different names - either to fool a publisher who had an exclusive contract on them or to fool the tax man.

George Kerr, for example, sometimes credited songs to Wesaline Kerr (his wife) whose maiden name was Hopson. On "I Have Faith In You" George was credited as Wesaline Hopson and this enabled him to sell his share of that particular song to a different publisher. At the time he may well have been in debt to another publisher who had paid him for songs in advance.

There's usually a good reason for these things ...and it usually involves money.

Maggie Bell's ID was confirmed years ago, in the late 70's, and I think it was me who discovered who Johnny was on a press release for a Johnny Curtis solo 45 where it mentions he was part of the duo.

I knew it was confrimed as Maggie Bell but for some reason had it in my head that the male vocalist was unconfirmed. Great stuff !

She met Petsye McCune and Rosemary Taylor whilst at Jackson State University and singing background at a recording studio. The Poppies were formed in 1966 and had a string of 45's and an album release for Billy Sherrell at Epic records.

She released 2 45's in 1967 for MGM under the Dottie Cambridge guise

Additionally, she is reputed to have released a 45 for Jamie in 1968 as Dorothy and the Hesitations entitled "Dont set me up for the kill"

Her popularity grew in the 70's and she has recorded for a long list of labels, including Avon, Avco, GSF, Chimneyville,Malaco, Handshake, Street King, Prelude, Volt and TK. She presently releases under her own label - Farish Street.

Agreed - the website and biographies seem to concentrate on her album releases and don't provide a lot of detail on the sixties period outside of involvment in the Poppies.

It's not surprising that she omits to credit the Dottie C recordings as her own - guess that you're not going to own up in the media to breaching your contract with a major recording company !

I'd always understood that Dottie C was in fact Moore and a quick look in Kev Roberts Top 500 book ratifies this. www.soulfulkindamusic.com has a good listing of Dorothy Moore releases. I was surprised to find that Dorothy & Hesitations is probably Dorothy Moore. I actually have a copy of that 45 !

Andrea Davis - You Gave me Soul and Lonely Girl on Chess = Minnie Riperton. She took that name in honour of her mentor Billy Davis aparently

Tommy Tate recorded a couple of records under pseudonyms: Tommy Yates on Verve, and Andy Chapman "Happy Is The Man" on Atco. The reverse of the Atco disc is not TT, but apparently blue-eyed soulman Ben Atkins of Memphis Nomads on Youngstown fame.
