What opinions on this, the wax was described only as "G" and the labels had writing on ?

Up untill the mid 1980's this record was another "forgotten" and like most of the classic NS ,had reached rock bottom on interest and value (I saw it still listed at £8)

How rare it really was,is difficult to say,looking back on it now,but even in the seventies Soul Bowl had them I think,at £3.

Ok time moves on and 35 years later it's still in demand,what would a mint - issue or demo go for now ?

And why (without naming the faces

) the (still) huge disparity between US prices and UK pounds ......?

I remember reading Lillie Bryant was first played at The Pendulum via Barry Tasker 71ish.

Barry was certainly playing it at the Pendulum early seventies. I eventually managed to do a deal for it, kept it for a few years then swapped it for some records from Steve Vickers. Extreme embarrassment, however, prevents me from saying what I swapped it for, suffice to say Lillie Bryant would now buy the records 100 times over.

The Lillie Bryant was in rough condition and as other people have said must be very hard to get in mint condition.

Not beyond anything I've ever found, 'cos I've bumped into rarer stuff - the first copy of Willie Hutch outside of Soussan was a good one, the only test press of Si Hightower and a few others come to mind, but it's one I just never came across in my travels. I should qualify that by saying that I never did the East Coast much, so there's a lot of East Coast stuff I've never found. Also I think Tay-Ster was a rarish label anyway compared to many others. It's similar to the Little Joe Romans discussion a while back - that's another pretty rare record IMO in that I simply haven't seen many originals over the years.

Mind you, you live and learn. I only found out yesterday that the Showstoppers "Gotta Get Closer To You" was issued on Party Time in the U.S. and I've certainly never ever seen that before and I bet many other people haven't either!

Never heard that the Showstoppers "Gotta Get Close To You" came out on Partytime. After leasing "Ain't Nothing But a Houseparty" from Partytime the owner gave me two white label test pressings of " Gotta..." saying it was never released . Would like to see a scan of it.Maybe someone has been creative with a scanner and printer.

I actually think it's real. After all, it took Arthur to find the second Four Perfections and that was after a while. "Ain't Nothing But A House Party" is difficult to find on Party Time too - I might have seen a couple but not until the 90's I think. Maybe the follow-up to "Ain't Nothing But A House Party" got buried in the U.S. whilst whoever owned Party Time chased up his royalties from the UK after the track hit over here.....?

Did the Showstoppers ever perform over here? One for Roburt I think........Plus anyone got a Party Time listing?

If the guy did fake it, he did a pretty convincing job for a You Tube clip. But why go to that kind of trouble....?

Big for about a month at Wigan via Richard and Pep, Ian, then dropped like a stone after it was booted

Remember some people i know from Birmingham, Jodie and Mickey, cant remember their surname... had a white demo in the late 9ts, only one I've ever gazed at, I suppose there are so few of those about you could trace every last one, I think they got that via Mick Smith, as they did allot of big records they had... m

They did indeed, it was 78, and me and my then girlfriend Gill went backstage and cracked them up, I bet they left the UK the next day never to return

No, I was talking about the second copy found after Soussan. Believe it or not, "I'm Not Strong Enough" was only ever played on carvers in the UK. No one had even seen an original until Arthur turned one up in the U.S........

While Gwen was definitely from Detroit, Lillie however was not and neither was the Tayster label< Liile was from New Jersey and Tayster and sister label Rojac were based in Harlem.

Lillie Bryant was half of the duo ,Billy and Lillie who first had songs released on Bernie Binnicks Philly based Swan Records and they were indeed from the NJ/NY area.

According to Jerry Ross, The Showstoppers did indeed play UK on the back of the demand for ANBAH but their first tour was actually undertaken by a group that would go on to become The Persuaders. (Pointdexter Brothers?)

I saw the Showstoppers at The Burnley Bank Hall Miners back in the late 70s and they were all teenagers! They did indeed have a girl in the line up.LOL! Of course by this stage The Showstoppers had been to UK to record for the Beacon label boss, Milton Samuel and had a fanbase of sorts. I can't remember but I think they may well have been English?!!

The Showstoppers are not the same group as The Four Perfections although they do both contain sets of brothers.

I've never heard of another Showstoppers on Party Time? I'd be interested in seeing a proper photo of that for sure.

As Rick Cooper and Neil Rushton released said track on Inferno maybe they can shed some light on it's provenance?

Incidentally, in case folks don't know. "Ain't Nothing But A House Party" was written by Carl Fisher who will be leading his group The Vibrations to Prestatyn in March.
