Doogle Muse - WHO?

You might well ask, but Dougle to the Melton Mowbray teenager in 1968 was “God of the Disco” he played SOUL spinning discs we’d never heard of before. “A Lot Of Love” was a Kirby Lane Youth Club top-choice that gave relief after a hard week of smoking in the Bike-Sheds, chasing Patricia Durrance around the desks, followed by beating up Forest fans during dinner break.

We thought he was “God” but he was playing it from the 1968 UK Minit re-issue with “60 Minutes Of Your Love” on the flip that we thought was also a “Doogle-exclusive”

Years later you look back on these episodes of your teenage life and realize just how sheltered we were from the real world of record collecting.

Before you today is a flawless 1966 FIRST ISSUE DEMO of Homer’s timeless club-masterpiece that would have rocked places a little better connected than our Friday-world of “Kirby Lane Youth Club”. The Nite Owl - Leicester, Twisted Wheel - Manchester, Mojo - Sheffield and most every Soho Club had rattled to the momentum of Memphis at least two years earlier.

Primarily Dunn Pearson, Harry Dempsey, Lyman Moffatt & Floyd Fleshman crafted two sessions that sadly proved fruitless despite using full orchestra and backing vocals to compliment Jesse’s seamless vocal.

Bob & Earl Don't Ever Leave Me C/w Fancy Free

SUE # 374 was Chris Blackwell & Guy Stevens biggest success whilst making available the weird and wonderful R&B from the USA. “Harlem Shuffle” of course rose to be the Bi-word for a MOD soulful get together.

Unfortunately successful sales for SUE release were few and far between, following “Harlem Shuffle” came two other Bob & Earl dance tunes, both of which fell on stoney ground to later become very hard to acquire number in the series.

This 1967 press the last of the three releases started life 5 years earlier USA Tempe release. A gritty grinding Soul-Stroller with bags of attitude and energy. Flip it over and the pace picks up and offers another great transitional Soul dancer.

Robert Relf & Earl Nelson may never have reached the heights of Sam & Dave but they did contribute more as a duo & solo artist than another other duo I can think of.

Interesting maybe, but the main point here is; find a flawless copy of SUE 4030 if you can.. an essential number in the UK most-wanted label and it’s pristine!

Madness I must say

I have no issue with JM, he is in business to sell records and obviously getting the best price is good for him

BUT, i cant help thinking that these crazy prices are just narrowing the market to those with money to throw around

I know we must move with the times and in hindsight the prices we were paying years ago for some stuff was probably too cheap in some cases, however, I do think its gone to the opposite end of the spectrum now and in some cases it's just stupid

It is a masterpiece of a record

The thing is it ain't rarity that fetches the big prices, it's the big Wigan era stuff. Some very rare 45's have gone for peanuts in comparison.

I love Gwen Owens by the way, and Eddie Parker come to that, but not that much.

Given his penchant for bulling up all his auction items to the max I think JM missed a trick with the John Woodson 45 as the B side, Chilly Willy, is a nice little upbeat tune.....probably not how John would have described it in his sales blurb.

 

I'd dispute his reason for the 45's scarcity however as, despite the poor editing the song was released again, without being remixed or any alteration, as a B side on PAM-O 104 in Canada.

Dont think the mel williams was over priced, seen one in less good condition for less but a minter usually fetches 800 GBP. Having said that, you dont see it very often, esp. not in mint minus cond. Holidays came a surprise, would have thought 500 GP tops.

I'm amazed at the the copy of B&S drew.

 

I've got virtually every copy from '68 to '81 and apart from a few early 70's issues that the centre poster has been removed and no doubt stuck on someones wall, in excellent condition.

 

Do the older, 60's and 70's copies generally command this kind of price?

Just quick story that I think sums up the situation with some auction prices. A couple of years ago I was spinning a particular record, when a guy jumped up on the stage. He looked at it and said he had a copy of it, and told me what he had paid for it. I told him that my near mint copy had been only half his price. 'Ah yes', he said, 'but I bought mine from Manship.' With that he stuck his nose in the air and pranced off. I have no issue with John Manship, he's a legitmate dealer, and good luck to him, but he does attract from very strange customers.

I old agree with 800 ish for a Mel Williams, great record but never really worked on the dance floors and 4/500 for Holidays. Thought it had always been around £400 for a good few years now.
